Gingrich's wife at center of presidential campaign turmoil, sources say

New details, including concerns over his third wife, Callista, have emerged about why Newt Gingrich's entire senior campaign staff walked out on the presidential hopeful. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.

Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign was crippled by behind-the-scenes blow-ups over the role of his wife, Callista, including her insistence that the campaign arrange for screenings of the couple’s movies made by their for-profit production company, according to current and former campaign staffers and advisers.

The use of campaign resources to promote the Gingriches' private movie ventures made some senior staffers uncomfortable and led to repeated confrontations over the issue, they said. The campaign even carved out space on the home page of the Gingrich campaign Web site, Newt.org, where a section dubbed “Callista’s Canvas” promoted the movies, with titles such as “Rediscovering God in America” and “A City Upon a Hill,” about American “exceptionalism.”

Four current and former advisers provided new details to NBC News about the internal conflicts that last week prompted 16 top staffers — including his campaign manager, Rob Johnson, and his longtime spokesman, Rick Tyler — to resign. The mass resignations have undermined Gingrich’s efforts to raise money — he has barely collected $3 million, according to two sources — and left his struggling campaign on life support, the current and former advisers said.

During Gingrich’s campaign trips, Callista Gingrich repeatedly insisted that the campaign carve out time for public screenings of their movies, where the couple answered questions from the audience, and then sold DVD copies, eating up hours of time on the candidate’s schedule, the campaign sources said. When Callista Gingrich sent out an email insisting that a movie screening be arranged in New Hampshire, the candidate’s senior staffer in the state, David Carney, fired off an angry reply, saying he would refuse to do so, sources said. Carney declined to comment.

In another case, sources said, staffers in South Carolina also refused to arrange a movie screening. This prompted Callista Gingrich to insist that she and her husband fly back from the state on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend — and miss a planned campaign event in Myrtle Beach —so the couple could attend the opera “Don Pasquale” at the Kennedy Center that night, the sources said.

The dispute over the movies wasn’t the only source of conflict within the campaign. Campaign sources say the candidate’s top aides also were upset over Callista Gingrich’s control over the campaign schedule, including her refusal to allow early-morning departures for campaign events because she insisted she needed time to have her hair done, the campaign sources said.

The conflicts climaxed over the couple’s decision to fly off for a week-and-a-half cruise of the Greek islands in early June. Top staffers pleaded with Gingrich not to go, saying – according to one former senior aide – that the vacation was “incompatible” with running a presidential campaign that was still trying to get off the ground.  Gingrich later defended the holiday as a chance to “get away and think.”

Read more reporting by Michael Isikoff in 'The Isikoff Files'

“Newt was in a box,” said one adviser close to Gingrich. “He wanted to campaign but on the other hand he had to keep his wife happy.  This was all about pacifying Callista.”

“Any husband that tells you his wife doesn’t play some role in his schedule is probably lying to himself,” said Joe DeSantis, Gingrich’s current campaign spokesman, when asked about the conflicts between the campaign staffers and Callista Gingrich. “Of course they make decisions together about their schedule. It’s their life.”

Slideshow: Newt Gingrich's career in photos

DeSantis said the complaints about Callista Gingrich were in a “long tradition of former consultants blaming the wife or the spouse for their frustrations. The fact is, this is Newt’s campaign and he is going to run it the way he thinks is best for America.”

DeSantis also defended the use of campaign resources, including the campaign Web site, to promote the movies by Gingrich Productions. He noted that a Federal Elections Commission advisory opinion requested by Massachusetts GOP Sen. Scott Brown permitted a similar use of his campaign Web site to promote one of his books. DeSantis said the Gingriches’ movies were part of the extended “conversation” that Gingrich wants to have with voters and shows his determination to run a different kind of presidential campaign.

In an interview with Fox News Tuesday night, Gingrich said he felt “liberated” by the resignations of his campaign staff and that the shakeup would allow him to run the kind of campaign he wants.

"My vision is of a people-oriented grassroots campaign where newt.org becomes the center of new solutions, new ideas, new energy -- a campaign that's inclusive, that brings together everybody in America of every ethnic background who wants to change Washington," he said. "And I think that that was so different from the normal Republican model, that there just wasn't a fit."

Still, the intermingling of campaign resources and private moneymaking ventures – while not completely unique for political candidates — may have created particular issues for Gingrich. In years past, he has been repeatedly accused of using non-profit groups for political or personal gain. Such accusations led to a House Ethics Committee reprimand in 1997 when Gingrich was speaker of the House.

This week, ABC News reported that a nonprofit charity that Gingrich set up, Renewing American Leadership (ReAL), paid more than $220,000 to another one of Gingrich’s companies, Gingrich Communications. DeSantis said that “ReAL and Gingrich Communications took great care to make sure all resources were being used legally and ethically.”

Most of the payments, he said, compensated the time of ReAL’s part-time executive director, Rick Tyler, who was an employee of Gingrich Communications, and the rest was to purchase Gingrich’s books, which the charity used for its fundraising efforts.

Talk about a "High Maintenance" wife, Yikes!!

Something tells me there should have been a conversation that went something like this:

(Newt) Callista, I am thinking of running for president....It will be alot of hard work and it may require some personal sacrifices....We may have to put off some of our personal plans.

(Callista) (Either) OK, Newt I am willing to make those personal sacrifices. (or) What? You want me to make personal sacrifices and put some of the things I want to do on a shelf for a while????

Newt would either run or not run based on which answer he received. She would have to refrain from wearing her diamond encrusted tiara from Tiffany's during press conferences.

People running for office in any capacity need to simply post a photo of the spouse and kids and leave it at that. We are not electing the wife of a president or any other office. The only exception would be if Hillary ran for president in which case I would welcome Bill's input. He at least has the experience to back himself up!

The President of the United States is a rather unique job. One that nearly completely envelops one's time. If the President has a demanding spouse that would require the President to constantly reshuffle his/her agenda for personal reasons, it would be of great detriment to this country. Hawking personal business projects instead of paying attention to the affairs of state? Newt is no longer a credible candidate. He made his choice.

Also, if she will use a non-profit to promote her own interests, just imagine how many Tiffany diamonds this bloodsucker could amass as the wife of the leader of the free world?

Can you say whipped!!! Newt is not running this thing, his wife is calling the shots. He does not have a chance in hell of getting the nomination unless he finds a way of putting her in a box and closing the lid. A candidates family should be there with smiles on for photo ops and should not do much more than that. Even if he can get her under control. I do not see Newt as having a realistic chance of getting the nomination. I think he is running just to pump up his for profit businesses, as seems apparent from this article. He will stay in long enough to give his movie and book sales a shot in the arm and then quietly drop out of the race.

Just when you've reach the pinnacle of disbelief, something like this makes the news and it's a cluster mind-screw, yet again. Newton has no credibility to begin with, and his attempt at a run for POTUS in 2012 would be comical if not for the damage he's doing to his own constituents and to his "party." As for Mr. & Mrs. Calista Gingrich, you're both serial adulterers, liars, schemers and failures in your personal lives. What makes you think WE would buy your brand of "morality" or "leadership" when it is clear you can't see straight to begin with? Do yourselves, your constituents and your "party" a favor and bow out of this ridiculous attempt to steal a little limelight for your movie production company. Any idiot that would follow your example(s) would have to a little dim to begin with. How hypocritical, irresponsible and SELF-SERVING can you get? I'm embarassed and ashamed for you since you're CLEARLY too self-righteous to accept that you're both full of bull chips. Give it a rest and give God a rest while you're at it. To ride a for profit venture on the coattails of a political campaign is at the heart of so much bad politics today. Far too many in politics have vested financial interests in the legislation they enact. Think any of them would recuse themselves from any vote where it would affect their personal financial interests?

This article is incredibly important in that it brings to light the conflicts of interest Newt should absolutely avoid.

    #3.1 - Wed Jun 15, 2011 12:47 PM EDT

This may not be "new" news, but it's not necessarily dirty underwear. IMO, the heart of the matter is someone's ability to set priorities and negotiate those priorities with the people involved -- something a President has to do on a daily basis. Mr. Gingrich seems to make it clear that his wife's wishes are a priority rather than his campaign. I don't have a problem with that, but if that's the case, he shouldn't be running for President. Running for the Presidency, like the job iteself, is a full-time, full-tilt job; sad to say, it's not very compatible with family priorities, but that's the way it is. But if his campaign is a priority, then he's failing to negotiate conflicting priorities with his wife. If he can't negotiate priorities with her, I doubt he'd be successful negotiating priorities with Congress or other heads of state.

The article also speaks to his inability to keep his personal profit interest out of a campaign. There are ways other than selling DVDs to get a message across, no matter what kind of "conversations" he wants to have with the American public.

IMO, a candidate's ability to set and negotiate priorities and whether he or she places personal profit interest on par with, or ahead of, the interests of the electorate, are very real issues that we should consider when we think about a Presidential candidate. They may not be the "real" domestic and international issues a President would face, but they are indicative of how someone might handle those "real" issues.

I also agree with Lizzie's points. It sounds like they should be running for King and Queen of England instead of Pres / First Lady of the U.S. She definitely wants to be treated like royalty. The last First Lady we had that felt she was royalty was Nancy Reagan. Callista appears to be very high maintenance.

But, regarding the finances and payments to his own company..... this is nothing different that any other politician does, Republican or Democrat. They're all equally crooked and in it for their own purposes. Rotten, two faced, crooked, lying, low-rent dirtbags......each and every one of them.

This is not necessarily "new" news. In fact, it supports the theory some have that Gingrich is really in this campaign to market his books and productions.

At the time he was making his announcement, his daughter visited several companies to learn better how to market and make deals for documentaries. Newt is not genuinely a serious candidate - he's a stark opportunist, and always has been.

As for Callista's role in things .... I quit the last campaign I was managing for similar reasons. The candidate was not serious, could not follow through on decisions, and his wife was a constant, constant pain in the butt.

She sounds like a real prima donna and very high maintenance. I think that he made a big mistake with her. That's what you get when you marry a trophy wife. She married him for his money and power and he married her for bragging rights.

If that's a 'trophy' how bad must his first wives have been? Wasn't he the douche that presented his wife with divorce papers while she was being treated for cancer? Real lump, this guy.

With or without that harlot Callista, there is no way Gingrich would win the Republican primary. No way.  And the Presidency?  Forget about it!  And the fact that Callista is a homely skank doesn't help.  Does anyone actually like her and her phony fake religious/ family values?  eeeek!

Perhaps my appearance and my beliefs are the reason I am not running for President of the United States. Well... that... and I am completely unqualified. And I do not hold myself out as the beacon of all that is beautiful and righteous in America. But, perhaps Gringrich and his trophy (gag!) wife should honestly consider the possibility that they are not really in the race to win, but to make a profit off of the true believers that will blindly hand their money over.

Callista Gingrich ain't dumb. She can read the writing on the wall, and it's darn likely that she knows Newt has zero chance of actually capturing the nomination. So, in her mind, it makes much more sense to promote the activity that WILL survive the travails of "Newt being Newt": the family business of selling America to Americans. This pair is a nothing more than a couple of hucksters who are going to cash in at every opportunity.

As for no early-morning meetings, it's my guess that neither one of them look all that great before noon.

We are all debating a moot point. Newt doesn't stand a chance, he's no different than Trump. All he is doing is using this forum to speak his mind, offer his ideas. He won't make the first cut.

Actually he is doing this all to promote his books and films. That has been evident since he started talking. He also thinks this will make it so he can get more money for speaking engagements. Both very shallow people.

        #20.2 - Wed Jun 15, 2011 1:36 PM EDT

You're right - he doesn't stand a chance, but I don't think his campaign is about anything more than making money. There's nothing wrong with making money, but don't make a mockery out of the Presidency. He has zero chance of being elected. But he will stay in there as long as possible, as long as any money comes rolling in from his PAC, his "non-profits", and other financial interests. He thinks he's a genius and he thinks he's outsmarting everyone, but it doesn't take much reading to see what's on that page! At least (ugh!) Sara hasn't yet gone for the Presidency, and if she doesn't it's to her credit (ugh). (Never thought I'd give her credit for anything, and she may yet prove me wrong by running) She seems quite happy doing what she does. (One wonders, especially now that Bachman has stolen the torch from her!)
