Western agencies eager for crack at Gadhafi archives

U.S. intelligence agencies hope to find details of Libya's involvement in terrorism worldwide. NBC's Robert Windrem reports.

By Robert Windrem, NBC News investigative producer

Western intelligence agencies believe there is a "treasure trove" of material in Libyan intelligence archives, and they may have already prepared to exploit it once Moammar Gadhafi's regime finally falls.

Current and former U.S. intelligence officials point to the possibilities of what could be found in the files, among them:

• The intelligence service's (and Gadhafi's own) role in the 1988 bombing of PanAm 103 and UTA 772 months later, which killed 430 people in the air and on the ground, as well as their role in the 1986 LaBelle Disco bombing in Berlin, which killed two U.S. soldiers and wounded 79 others.

• Support for various terrorist groups, including Palestinian groups, the Irish Republican Army, the El Rukns street gang in Chicago and individual terrorists like Carlos the Jackal and Abu Nidal.

• A purported 1981 assassination plot against U.S. President Ronald Reagan.

• Gadhafi's financial support for the Pakistani nuclear weapons program in the 1980s and the relationship between Libya and Pakistani nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan a decade later, as well as Western countries that supported Gadhafi's chemical and biological weapons programs.

Obama promises to support Libyan transition

There may also be materials on U.S. intelligence operations against al-Qaida, which began under President George W. Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. A steady stream of U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials visited Libya over the last decade as relations between the two countries got better.

U.S. officials say Gadhafi has one major intelligence service but that there are also "security elements around him" who carry out intelligence and security operations and whose files Western intelligence agencies would also like to exploit.

One former official suspects there may already be planning for that exploitation. He noted that Musa Kusa, the former head of Libyan intelligence and one of Gadhafi's most loyal aides, had defected.

Yeah like he would be keeping copies of all of the incriminating evidence. No doubt the US will "find" it though.

So you are telling me that because you want information from one man you decide to destroy his country and have thousand of his country men ans women killed?. what does that say about us!..

One thing you should know , The Chinese are watching , very carefully and the NKs too are watching.

    Reply#5 - Mon Aug 22, 2011 8:58 PM EDT

Yeah right the "NK's" are watching....American Idol maybe because they as a country can't do a thing to anyone outside their own borders.

The Chinese can watch all they want, but they're primarily concerned about our economy.

The North Koreans (government) are nothing. China is their ally but they wouldn't risk their economic relationship with the US and the west just to protect NK. The main reason we care about the North Korean government is because they are a threat to our ally South Korea.

The situation with Libya is not like Iraq where the US led a full, ground invasion. NATO and the internationally community may be involved here, but the rebels themselves are the driving force. They are standing up to their ruthless dictator. When Gaddafi started attacking his own people, he reached the point of no return. It is not "his country". A man cannot own a country. Sovereignty must lay within the individual.

LOL... Yeah, the rebels are definately the driving force. They don't move unless NATO clears the way for them, then they walk in all jubilant because they won! yippee! It was so difficult - I walked 3 blocks into Tripoli after the 4 day ride in the truck. It was hard avoiding all the craters from the 7500+ bombing runs NATO did for us. And the US Special Ops teams went ahead and scouted, and sniped whatever troops were left after the bombing run, so we had to like, drive, and then march, and get our photos taken, yeah. It was a very difficult fight for us.

I hope you all realize this is all a part of the bigger plan by the banking elite. You do know this is all about the Libyan Bank's reluctance to play nice with the IMF and world bank right? You do know that the Libyan Central Bank head resigned a week before the uprising after Ghadaffi's regime refused to be part of the IMF right? You do know the protesters, er freedom-fighters, er Al-Qaeda rebels setup a central bank and tied it to the IMF with the help of the CIA right before NATO declared a no fly zone right? You did know that the central Bank of Libya received over 60+ billion in federal bailout dollars from the Federal Reserve discount window didn't you? Oh you didn't believe the Lame Stream Media did you? For shame. Oh well just go out and vote for the candidates the MSM is feeding you and everything will turn around. Sick of the Dems vote Repub and vice versa ad- infinitum. They really are both 2 sides of the same welfare-warfare fiat dollar ya know? Or you could vote for the only candidate who will End the wars and bring our troops home. You could vote for the only candidate who the MSM refuses to cover. You could vote for the candidate who has received more active duty military donations than all other candidates combined, including the president. You could vote for the only candidate who will fight to End the private banking cartel known as the Fed!

You do realize that you are a total conspiracy-theory-crippled nut job, right?

Here's a clue for leading a sane and reasoned life, 'ubermensch.' The least complicated and most transparent story is almost always the truth.

Do yourself a favor and get some medication and qualified mental health therapy. You're off the deep end, but you can still have a normal life.

What this is about is a lunatic dictator who brutalized his own people for 42 years trying to hold onto illegitimate power which he gained by military coup, finally getting his comeuppance.

That's it. No IMF, no Ron Paul conspiracy theories. Just plain ol' vengeance against an oppressor. One of the oldest stories of mankind.

And I hate to break up your fantasy, but your hero Dr. Paul is nothing but a right wing version of Ralph Nader, and has as much chance to get elected as he did.

your right the simplest answer is usually right. It's about the money it's always about the money.

Ghadaffi had it and someone else wanted it. It's always money, we just make different excuses to justify it.

Way to go, blowing the whistle on all of this information prior to securing it.

HEY MEDIA, could you be a little more mindful of operational intelligence, please?

Perhaps we could then ensure that we actually have the intel in-hand before speculating on what stuff they should be erasing just in case.

after corporate america robbed the world, you'd think all the agencies in the world would want to have a crack at the senate/corporate terrorist archives. just shows how widespread the corruption is

How sad - we're there to prevent harm coming to innocent civilians.  And all the western intelligence agencies are foaming at the mouth for Libya's state secrets... :(  What if they find that there is absolutely no connection to the bombings or supporting terrorist groups, just like there isn't any mustard gas or weapons of mass destruction?

What's sad is there is no proof that innocent civilians were harmed by
Gadhafi. However, the US murdered plenty of civilians with drone missiles.

In Libya there are no laws against destroying records...because...at this time there are no laws.

Bet your booties unless an effort to capture there records with special troops is carried out, they will be quickly destroyed....if they have not already been done so, probably by Seif's express order....

All the conservs are just mad because we got the proper outcome w/o losing a single precious American serviceman's life. Unlike George W....... who has plenty of our fine soldier's blood on his hands. Don't see him out in public do you. Wonder why? Also...don't mention that the Obama administration found and killed Osama. That was something the previous admins couldn't or wouldn't do. Makes you wonder what they were doing other than totally ruining the American economy...

Osama started with 20 million dollars and no terrorist contacts, and terrorist us for 15 years. Now we turned Ghadaffi lose with billions in hidden assets and multiple terrorist contacts This might not have been our best move.

We don't see him out and about like other presidents. A little sorry about ruining our economy? Also, none of you seem to acknowledge the fact that Obama's administration found and killed Osama when the previous admins couldn't or wouldn't do the job. All the while Exxon and similar corporatins earn billions each quarter and still get government handouts. Something very wrong with this situation........

When Ghadaffi went after HRH King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and the monarch of Qatar, among several other Gulf State leaders, he signed his own death warrant. He lost all support from the Muslim dominated states, allowing us to foment and then aid the long wished for rebellion of his own people. HRH King Abdullah will not see a "Jasmine Revolution" in Saudi Arabia, much to the distress of the uninformed. The reason is quite simple. Saudi Arabia spent its oil money on the people, building schools, mosques, police stations, and stores in ever city and every village in the country. They also set up a 21st Century transportation system, gave loans to those who proved they would make their payments, and educated every Saudi who wanted it, anywhere in the world. He also tried to give the women the vote and drivers licenses, but had the conservative women riot against it. He has started a new University to bypass all these objections outside Jeddah, and there, half the students will be women, and the same rules that apply in the ARAMCO camps will apply there. The Saudi royals are the ones leading the "Jasmine Revolution" in Arabia, and they started doing so clear back in the 1960's! I know. I was there. And I saw it again in 2000, all over the country. They have more PhD's and Masters degreed in government than any nation on Earth. They demand competence and openness to all citizens by their leaders. We could learn a thing or two about running a government bureaucracy from them!

We won't see the revolution in Saudi because most of their money is invested in US Treasury Bonds you you know that deficit we can't live without. We won't train and eqiup revolutionist and then send them there to protest and start a revolution. That would not be in the US's interest.
