Since May 1, U.S. intelligence and special operations forces, or foreign forces working with U.S. intelligence and special operations forces, have killed the leading terrorists who targeted and killed more Americans than any others in the past 25 years.
Not only did the U.S. kill Osama Bin Laden on May 1, but also took out — "removed from the battlefield" — three of the jihadists they had identified as potential successors to bin Laden in the hours after the attack. Also, Somali forces loyal to the U.S. killed the mastermind of al-Qaida's East Africa embassy bombings. With 224 killed, 12 of them Americans, the attacks in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam were the group's deadliest attack before 9-11.
As for Moammar Gadhafi, it was his intelligence service that has been strongly linked to the attack on PanAm 103 in December 1988, which until September 11 was the single worst terrorist attack directed against the U.S., killing 269 people. (Gadhafi was also believed responsible for the deaths of 171 people on UTA 772 over the Congo.)
Here is the chronology:
May 1: Osama Bin Laden was killed by U.S. Special Forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
June 3: Ilyas Kashmiri, senior al-Qaida member and one of the five potential successors to al-Qaida leadership, is killed by a drone attack in Ghwakhwa area of South Waziristan, Pakistan.
June 8: Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, al-Qaida leader in East Africa and the mastermind of the East Africa embassy bombings was shot dead by Somali forces at a checkpoint in the capital. He was identified by a wanted poster provided by the U.S. military.
August 22: Attiyah Abd al-Rahman, newly minted No. 2 in al-Qaida, is killed by drone attack in North Waziristan. Attiyah was also seen by the CIA as potential successor to bin Laden and had served as bin Laden's "chief of staff" prior to the May 1 attack.
September 30: Anwar al-Awlaki, operational leader in al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, is killed by drone attack in Yemen's al-Jawf province. He, too, had been identified as a potential successor to bin Laden.
October 20: Moammar Gadhafi, Libya’s leader for 42 years, was killed in a gun fight by Libyan rebels near Sirte.
U.S. officials remain confident that they are going to find and kill bin Laden’s successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri. Zawahiri himself admits he’s been targeted at least five times.
(Historical footnote: The Marine Barracks bombing in 1983 killed 241 U.S. servicemen and the East Africa embassy bombing and was until the Pan Am 103 bombing the single worst terrorist attack on the United States. It was the handiwork of Imad Mugniyah, who was killed in February 2008 in Damascus, Syria, by a bomb hidden in the headrest of a car. As he walked past the car, the bomb was detonated. It was believed to be the handiwork of a joint U.S.-Israeli operation.)

I find MR2.............'s posting puzzling and disturbing. He feels that the nation of Saudi Arabia is responsible for 9/11? We have done a pretty good job of knocking off the people responsible for the last three years. We are getting smarter and more cost effective at it too in terms of lives lost, lives put in danger, and money. I thank the Commander in Chief and our military leaders for this.
I think MR2 was referring to the fact that a majority of the 9/11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia. However, considering that Al Qaida was spreading propaganda against the Saudi government and did terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia with the goal of overturning the Saudi government, we can be confident that the Saudi government was not directly involved with or supported the 9/11 attack.

The hoe, you got that one wrong. This nation genocided twice as many Native Americans as Hitler killed Jewish. Yup, we love to mass murder and glorify it so the poor will offer up their kids to die at 19 for all of our wars. Every few years, we select a brand new enemy and all the reasons and chit chats, shifting like a blowing wind, and mass murder all over again. The war that took out my generation was Viet Nam, and today, it's America's new hot spot for vacations. I lost many friends, and what did that war solve -- certainly not world peace, just 55,000 kids slaughtered.

Lets get one thing straight for all you none military types out there. We the military can't shoot, move, or communicate without the permission of our chain of command and the President. The buck stops at his desk, good or bad he is held responsible. And it is called special ops. Which is a make up of many forms of special forces. And probably the only people unhappy about this man being killed is the Republicans in Congress/Senate who (Gaddafi) sent a thank you letter for their effort to try and get President Obama to stop in his initial attack on his regime, and his request and support of the future NATO forces trying to destroy his terrorist dictatorship. The TRUTH, David, is that most terrorists are illiterate people, that are brainwashed by a cult-like leader that is charismatic and evil. These men, women, and children that are unwittingly victimized BEFORE becoming the victimizers do not know what is in the Holy Qur'an because they can not read it. They have no idea what America says or does except in very limited circumstances. They are promised things that the religion NEVER states.
The reason that most of them come from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, and African countries is that these are some of the most under developed areas on the planet, with illiteracy rates reaching 80% or more of the population.
Yes the Palestinians, Hamas, and the "enemies of Israel" do NOT fit with what I have just said, but their can be explained as well. The people in and around the lands of Palestine were just uncerimoniously shoved aside and told what was going to happen. Regardless of their insistance that they have the RIGHT to discriminate against "non-Jews (including Christians) nobody intervenes.
The people of Palestine are DENIED the ability to defend themselves, because with U.S. approval, their oppressors are also their "protectors." They are left with no real way to defend themselves and punish their oppressors than to use their bodies as weapons.

President Obama had always turned to the courage of the Seals when talk of Usama bin Laden came up. Always to the people in uniform who are protecting us and their families, here and abroad, the POTUS always thanks and trying to make right by them. There's only so much he can do with a House of Reps. that are out to destroy him, as per the agenda the R/Tps have to make him a one-termer. The rebels never would have close if it wasn't for Obama and NATO. I'm Republican and you just look like a fool with your head in the sand to deny that Obama and NATO had nothing to do with it. It's also true that if Obama had acted earlier, this would have been done 5-6 months ago.

Trying to get credit? Obama was practically lavishing congratulations on the Libyan people for his entire speech, praising their dedication. The only credit for America that the President gave was to our brave servicemembers who did their part to aid the Libyan people.
As usual, the teabaggers try to distract from a great day and portray the President as an attention-seeking man, when the reality is that he's been the picture of humility. Just like every other time they've tried it.

President Obama has been the picture of humbleness and humility throughout all of this. He quietly, but vigilantly, has protected the American people against terrorists.

This 'Arab Spring' happened for many reasons. Things like twitter being one of them. One thing that did not have anything to do with it was invading Iraq/Afghanistan. So how many Americans/Iraqis/Afghans have died for nothing? For something that could have happened a lot more peacefully? Especially Iraq. Iraq may have started the Arab Spring before any other country had.

I believe we are better off now than we were four years ago! I believe that Mr. Obama is smart enough to allow the military to fight once they've been committed to fight. It's the military (including the intelligence agencies) that accomplished this. They were committed to a job by the commander in chief and then allowed to do their jobs once assigned. I thank the military for a job well done and I thank the president for having the sense to know when to assign the jobs and allowing the forces to do the jobs they'd been trained to do without conflicting instructions and micro-management.

Only 1/2 of 1% of US Citizens are currently Serving in the US Military. Of the 1/2 of 1% of US Citizens of the US Military, 3% are US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces. Of the 3% of the US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces only 1% are trained for the types of Missions your are endorsing as suicidalDirect Action Missions. Why do you think the average age of the USN SEALs that recently died in the Helicopter crash was age 35? That is how long it takes to be barely trained (just to survive long enough to gain Operational Experience), and not necessarily having language training and operational experience.
"Seals" are the animals. USN SEALs (acronym) are the STs.
You want to make this Political. President Obama did not want to do the High Risk Special Reconnaissance Mission to determine if OBL was even there. The US Military Leadership and the US Intelligence Agencies had to twist his arms to even get authorization.
After the mission started with US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces (Not just the USN SEALs) and CIA SAD loading up on the US Army 160th SOAR's MH-6s (armed escorts)(4), MH-60s (3), MH-47s (2), MH (used as C4I), took off from Bagram AFB on these US Army 160thSOAR helicopters. To cover them while at Pakistanis Airspace the USAF (Special Operations Wing, Afghanistan) coordinated USAF Fighters to orbit at the Afghanistan/Pakistan Border and some other USAF assets on standby incase of a ground contact with the Pakistanis Military. These being General Petraeus's assets as the Commanding Officer Afghanistan.
Audio Two way communications was between the "Boots on the Ground" Operators with one way video Mission cameras. Two way video communications (Video Conferencing) were between the C4I Helicopter, Afghanistan (General Petraeus), JSOC (Admiral McRaven), SOC (Admiral Olsen), CIA (Leon Penetta), and the White House (Situation Room, actually one of the rooms to one side). These were some of the people that had to twist President Obama's Arms to even get their US Military Asymmetric Warfare Plans implemented, including the justification, President Bush's Amending the US No Assassination Policy, 2006, to allow the Termination of OBL.
April 2009, During the Rescue attempt of Captain R. Phillips, President Obama was requested for authorization to Terminate the Somalis Terrorists by the USN SEAL Team Commander and the On Scene Commander (Commander of the USS Bainbridge). President Obama froze up (just like previous Presidents). The USN SEAL Team Commander and the On Scene Commander (OSC) used "Imminent Danger" to circumvent the Political Indecisions (wait hours, days, etc. while the situation changes every second. Window of opportunity slams shut.). Like stated before Professional Politicians distance themselves from any High Risk US Military Asymmetric Warfare Missions, by doing things like being on the golf course, etc. to appear not to be connected to or have authorized these Missions until they are successful (or someone finds out, like Desert One and Operation Eagle Claw. After a Failure.). If this Mission would have failed the OSC and the USN SEAL Team Commander would be keel hauled during a Congressional Hearing for "Exceeding Authority", and would become permanent residents of the nearest Federal Penitentiary, Brig or the Leavenworth Disciplinary Barracks; as to why "Imminent Danger" is no longer a valid defense.
Because President Obama froze up before Leon Penetta established a contingency (someone to watch to see if President Obama froze up again). During the Special Reconnaissance Mission, it was verified that OBL was there. This then became a Direct Action. Requests from the Mission Commander, the USN SEAL Team Commander, the CIA SAD Operators, etc. requested Termination of OBL. President Obama froze up again during the two way video conferencing. Leon Penetta's informant at the White House lets him know. Leon Penetta (not at the White House Situation Room) authorizes the Termination of OBL. During this mission, there was also a Communications Blackout to the White House of 23 minutes; this Blackout did not affect/effect the communications between the Mission Commanders (on the Ground), MH C4I (Helicopter), General Petraeus (Afghanistan), Admiral Olsen (SOC), Admiral McRaven (JSOC), Leon Penetta (Director CIA), etc. (split screen two way video conferencing). Maybe 20 years from now you will get to see what SOS Clinton was responding to when she put her hand over her mouth (note: allergy in an environmentally controlled room? as stated by SOS Clinton the next few days afterwards.).

In example, which party in Congress pushed for improved body armor and which party opposed it (too expensive)? We cannot find any of our previous 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen, so we must buy the trust of the Northern Alliance, since we do not have the time (years of living with them to gain their trust) to gain their trust. Those of us that were here (Afghanistan) before go into Kabul to disrupt the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Government before the arrival of the Northern Alliance. Some of what we did is described in Doug Stanton's book: Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan.
9. The Mission for Afghanistan is: 1. Overthrow the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Government., 2. UN Mission Nation Building., 3. Terminate Osama Bin Laden and eliminate Al Quada Afghanistan, after President Bush amended the US No Assassination Policy (2006).

12. May 2009. General McKienan finisheshis War Plans to Win Afghanistan. General McKiernan is ignored by US Politicians, especially President Obama. General McKiernan goes Public during an Interview with Katie Couric (May 12, 2009) ; that he does not have enough US Military Forces to implement his War Plan. President Obama wants to Relieve General McKiernan of Command and is told that he does not have a legal leg to stand on. As it is the Duty of a US Military Officer to go Public as a last resort after the Politicians refuse to listen to those matters that will result in the deaths of the silent US Citizens of the US Military, as per US Congressional US Military Commissioning Certificate and the fact that as the Commander of Afghanistan as approved by US Congress, to relieve General McKiernan of Command would require a Public US Congressional Hearing; so President Obama makes a deal with General McKiernan to retire as a Four Star General instead of a Lieutenant General to get General McKiernan's Letter of Resignation. After Resigning, President Obama grabs General McKiernan's War Plans to Win Afghanistan and declares this his own War Plan to Win Afghanistan. Since President Obama never served in the US Military, he does not know that General McKiernan's War Plan to Win Afghanistan is useless without General McKiernan's Commander's Intent.
13. April 2009, President Obama Chops the USAF and USN with his Defense Budget Cuts. This results in the USAF F-22 to be chopped (95,000 US Civilian Jobs), and one of eleven USN Aircraft Carrier Groups (plus one USN Air Wing, USN Support Ships and USN Submarine (Escorts)) with hundreds of thousands of lost US Civilian Jobs. This occurs during Four Wars (Iraq, Afghanistan and two Secret Wars).
14. August 2009, General McChrystal assumes Command of Afghanistan as a ardent Democrat nominated by President Obama and confirmed by US Congress. General McChrystal was previously: the JSOC Commander, the Commander of a JSOC Task Force that successfully located and captured President Hussein as well as the Rescue of Jessica Lynch, he is condemned for his methods that lead to the locations. General McChrystal (US Army Special Forces) is the Right Hand Man for General Petraeus for all US Military Asymmetric Warfare matters while at Iraq.
15. August 2009, President Obama sends a hundred thousand US Civilians to Iraq and Afghanistan. President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke negotiate with President Karzai Presdient Obama's Rules of Engagement as "Cannot Shoot Until Shot". The privilaged US Civlians of President Obama's US Civilian Surge are putting a tremendous Logistics strain on the US Military at Afghanistan. As these US Civilians are demanding BurgerKing, Starbucks, Pizzia Joints, Mexican Food, catered Banquets, Surf and Turf, Restaurants, etc. as their "Rights" to President Obama's Poltical Appointees Eikenberry, Holbrooke, SOS Clinton and even President Obama. These US Civilians refuse to even eat at the US Military Dining Facilities that they manage and staff. General McChrystal decides to close these places down, and devote the US Military Logistics to providing the US Military with Bullets instead of Buns and Hamburger Patties to be flown in for BurgerKing. As part of President Obama's US Civilian Surge (still on going): a. Are those US Civilian City Police, that have no training nor experience in Insurgency Warfare, nor training and experience in Counter Terrorist Activities, and most importantly no language training attempting to train the Afghan Law Enforcement. Same thing happened at Iraq. The mission of training Foreign Nations Military and Law Enforcement was a US Military Asymmetric Warfare Foreign Internal Defense (FID) Mission as we are trained and experienced as well as language. b. The Civilian "Humanitarian Aid" Mission, also the same problems as many do not know the language and as "non combatants" cannot defend themselves. This requires more of the limited US Military Personnel to be diverted from the US Military Missions to protect them, sometimes whole platoons or squads to protect one US Civilian. c. The US Military Personnel to protect the US Embassy are replaced by US Civilian Wackenhut Security Guards, they are observed by the Afghans partying naked drunk and dancing at night, creating an International Incident (proved the decadence of the "Foreigners" to the Afghans). President Obama's Political Appointee has them shipped out thru Diplomatic channels, since the Afghans are demanding they be punished under Islamic Laws. d. The few things built by the US Civilian Humanitarian Aid Missions are very expensive (millions USDs each building) and do not survive the first Afghan Winter; unlike us buying cheap local materials (couple hundred USDs) for the Afghans to build their own schools and medical clinics (we are read the "Riot Act" by President Obama's Political Appointees that we cannot do this anymore).
President Karzai requests that General McChrystal Investigate President Obama's Polticial Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke. SOS Clinton refused. As Billions of Aid USDs are being spent and nothing is being built or done. President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke are told by General McChrystal they are being Investigated (big mistake by General McChrystal). President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke start to scream to the International News Media "President Karzai Corrupt" to deflect attention from themselves. General McChrystal as trained and experienced in US Military Asymmetric Warfare knows that what President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke did was give the Al Quada, Taliban the Strategic Asymmetric Warfare Goals of "Undermining a US Ally and US Ally Government", "Undermining (defeating) the Afghan National Will to Continue the Fight", "Gained Local, National, International Support for the Al Quada, Taliban Cause", etc..
President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke start to demand the Resignation of General McChrystal to stop his Investigations of them.
General McChrystal attempts to circumvent President Obama's Rules of Engagement with more US Military Asymmetric Warfare Missions (MQ strikes at Northeastern Afghanistan/Pakistan). President Obama is extremely angry at General Petraeus (General Betrayus), as General Petraeus did not let President Obama know what the results of his Investigation were before giving President Karzai a copy. Secretary of Defense Gates tell President Obama not to relieve General Petraeus of Command (three Generals Relieved of Command, would end President Obama's Political Career). President Obama makes a deal with General Petraeus to become the Director of the CIA (President's Own Executive Intelligence Agency). Some of us are redeployed to Yemen on Temporary Duty Assignment.

Our forward operating bases are staging grounds for the Spec Ops and CIA operatives that gather the information on these militants. Your post implies the the US and NATO are separate entities. The US is a member of NATO. Since NATO was involved, the US was involved. Some of the European members (France, Italy, UK) played more visible roles than we did, but we were involved.
You are correct that NATO involvement prevented the Libyan government fro putting down the rebellion early on, and NATO involvement sustained the rebellion for the long haul. But the rebels, despite not being a professional force, managed to develop enough organization, training, communications and logistics to get the grunt work done. Credit is due all participants.
Pan Am 103 is now, at least in part, avenged. Too bad it took so long.
Now let's hope that this won't result in yet another case of one dictator succeeding another.

NATO has always been run by the will of the US, and the Commander in Chief of the Military is the President, with the authority, and discression, whether or not to put US servicemen in harms way, and what, and how much material support to give to our allies.
Obama could have send SF guys into Libya with a stroke of a pen. He could have gotten us mired in another expensive war, and actually increased Libyan resistance to the revolutionaries. Who do you think influenced NATO to get involved...uh...the US? Who was there the first day? US Bombers making strikes and US ships launching 117 Tomahawk missiles? When the US gracefully pursuaded other countries in NATO to take the forefront in the AIR campaign, who do you think opened our armory of bombs and missiles because the French and British didn't have enough on hand? Think any General could authorize that? Did it go by Congress? NO.. Our Commander in Chief sent Ms. Clinton to rally NATO and quietly supported the effort in Libya with whatever was needed, WITHOUT making us a target of radicals hoping to portray us as imperialists. Instead we have a lot of thankful Libyans who are well aware they couldn't have done it without our help. Time will tell.
And to TX lurking out there, I was myself an Army Officer who did his front line time in the sandbox. I never saw this overwhelming majority of right wingers in the Regular Army. What evidence do you have of this other than your own opinion? I know my friends in the VFW certainly see that the Dems have done a LOT more for soldiers and Vets over the last couple decades. And as a soldier, I would think you would realize the importance of the Commander in Chief in any mission. Those Seals would never have been in Pakistan if Obama hadn't had the balls to violate Pakistan's border. The entire operation had to be approved by the Commander in Chief, and HE would have taken the blame if it had gone bad. It's good that he is giving the service men who risked their lives the credit for executing the mission so well, but we didn't elect him to go in himself. He was elected to make the hard go, no-go decisions based what always tends to be shakey intelligence. The fact he has made those decisions so well is a credit to him. Aren't you even curious how many times Bush had intel, but chose political ties to Pakistan, or less precise missile strikes, to get the job NOT done? We'll never know how many times he chickened out, only that he didn't get the job done, and President Obama HAS accomplished many great feats, at much less cost!

better get used to misspellings on internet articles since the people want news fast so proofreading is usually done after it's posted for the most part and edited on the fly as people are reading it. Abortion will always be around simply because sex education is lacking, birth control is expensive, planned parenthood (who offers free/low cost birth control) is villainies, men continue to walk away from their babies leaving woman to raise "their problem", welfare mother's are looked down upon, single mothers are looked down upon and once again, the men who help make them so often refuse to help raise them let alone support them.
I've got two kids that I love and adore and thankfully I have a husband who was raised right that loves them too. I am blessed but I am very aware that many woman are not so lucky.

In the U.S.A. the government has given doctors permission to kill unborn babies with the consent of the mother/parents. The end result of every abortion is a dead human being. The method of abortion used is dependent on the development of the unborn human being; ranging from taking pills to full surgical abortion. Also, some people have survived the "medical procedure" and are full grown adults.

What you don't seem to realize is how hypocritical it is. Nobody has an abortion for frivolous reasons, it isn't fun or entertaining, it won't make one rich or beautiful, it isn't a fad or fashion. The ONLY reason anyone ever has an abortion is that they think it is necessary. Therefore, it doesn't matter how many repressive laws you pass, how many women you jail, how many clinics are bombed, how many doctors are killed, as long as abortion remains a necessity, abortions will continue.
Logically, if you want to end abortions, then you should work to make them unnecessary. Help the unwed mother with medical aid and maternal assistance. Educate young teens on how to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Assist with child care and adoptions.

Editorial note: Bin Laden was not killed by Special Forces. When they say "Special Forces" (caps) it means specifically the Army Green Berets. We have lots of different "special forces" (lower case), including the Navy SEALs, who killed Bin Laden.
