The suicide bombing last weekend in Mogadishu – allegedly by a Somali American from Minnesota – has highlighted the important role played by U.S. citizens in the operations of al-Shabab, the Islamic terrorist organization battling the government in the war-torn east African nation.

An FBI handout photo shows Abdisalan Hussein Ali, a Somali American who was 19 when he disappeared from Minnesota in November 2008. It is now suspected that he carried out a suicide attack against an African Union base in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on Saturday.
If it is confirmed that Abdisalan Hussein Ali was one of two suicide bombers who attacked an African Union base, killing themselves and eight others, it will have been the third suicide bombing carried out in Somalia by Americans since 2008.
And U.S. officials tell NBC News that at least two members of the al-Shabab hierarchy are American-born, 20-something college dropouts, one of whom may be in the group’s “inner circle.”
U.S. officials and counterterrorism analysts estimate there are at least 40 Americans fighting with al-Shabab in Somalia, as well as another 200 with passports that would permit them to enter the U.S. without a visa.
Many of the al-Shabab soldiers are Somali-Americans, many of them from the Minneapolis area, like Ali. The two leaders are not. They are Arab-Americans who traveled to Somalia in the latter part of the last decade and began rising in the ranks of the al-Qaida-linked terrorist group.

One — San Diego-native Jehad Marwan Mustapha — is believed to be part of the group’s senior leadership. The other, Omar Hammami, is a unit commander.
Hammami's role has long been known. The 27-year-old from a suburb of Mobile, Ala., was profiled in the New York Times Sunday Magazine last year and has appeared in a number of al-Shabab videos, including one where he rapped an English-language recruiting pitch.
Hammami, whose father is Syrian, joined al-Shabab in late 2006 and took the name “Abu Mansoor al-Amriki,” or Abu Mansoor the American.

He was interviewed in October 2007 by al-Jazeera, which identified him as a spokesman for the group, then indicted two months later by a federal grand jury on charges of material support for terrorism. He has since released four video and audio messages, most recently in April, when he mocked reports of his death and made his hip-hop recruiting pitch.
Mustapha, 29, is less well-known and has a less public role in al-Shabab, but is likely more influential in the terrorist group, according U.S. officials and Evan Kohlmann, an NBC News terrorism analyst.
“Though his name is perhaps lesser known than that of American national Omar Hammami, Jehad Mustapha is nonetheless reputed to be among the very top leaders of the foreign jihadists fighting alongside Shabab al-Mujahideen in Somalia under the banner of al-Qaida,” Kohlmann said.
One U.S. counterterrorism official, who like the others in this article spoke on condition of anonymity, referred to Mustapha as a “pretty bad dude” who has been with al-Shabab for “several years … long enough to be a significant commander … a senior player in the organization.”
Al-Shabab recently released video of a heavily masked, blue-eyed man speaking in American-accented English at a charity event in southern Somalia, and identified him as a representative of al-Qaida. Officials believe that the man could be Mustapha, who was indicted in the U.S. in August 2010 on charges of providing material support to terrorists.
In Somalia, Mustapha served under Saleh Nabhan, a senior al-Qaida and al-Shabab operative killed in a Navy SEAL operation in September 2009.
There are conflicting reports on whether he had contact with Anwar al-Awlaki, the late New Mexico-born leading member of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, who was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in September.
Mustapha lived in San Diego through his late teens, when al-Awlaki was preaching in the city and is known to have had contact with other young jihadists, including two 9/11 hijackers, before leaving San Diego in 2002.
One U.S. official who spoke with NBC News said there is evidence to suggest contact, while declining to characterize it. A second official said he was unaware of any such connection.
Kohlmann said he also had no information indicating a connection, but added, “It’s not the most far-fetched thing I've ever heard.”
Before he was radicalized, Mustapha was working through his way through the University of California, San Diego, by manning the front desk at an auto repair shop.
By all accounts the son of working-class parents was responsible and easy-going. He was interested in business, majoring in economics.
Then, after marrying a Somali woman, he picked up and headed for her homeland. Now, say U.S. officials, when suicide bombers are dispatched to carry out their attacks, it's likely Mustapha is aware of it.

It seems that we have to start wondering about everyone that calls themselves "something-Americans". If they don't want to be identified solely as Americans, there seems to be some hate involved.
I have wondered for some time now why after Blackhawk down happened, we keep importing so many from Somaliua. It seems a self fufilling prophesy that some or maybe many will be bad guys.

Considering how many Somalis there are in this country total, the number of bad apples is usually fairly small. They're also not in a great position to do much other than be foot soldiers or lead men into battle to cause damage against African Union forces overseas.

I think what Kilo was alluding to is having people from another culture in America affects those that were already of the American culture and results in your "white boy teenager from middle class America" being affected and changing his views to align more with the people from the newly introduced culture. As long as this "US and THEM" , LIBERAL VS DEMOCRAT mentality continues, we will always be divided and we cannot effect proper change. We all seem to thrive on our differences, picking sides. Until people can realize we're all really ONE with the same basic human needs, once you strip away the exterior facades, we will never, ever be able to rid the world of true human atrocities. Then again, since when did peace and unity and ever make MONEY? Ever see us enter a war where there was no economic or political gain for ourselves? I can promise there are atrocities in the world you never hear of, because there is no money in helping those people out. If there isn't something in it for us, we ignore it as if it doesn't exist. Have we really ever "won" a war in recent years? Can't we learn from history and see what HASN"T worked and stop making the same mistakes?

Kennedy also approved the Bay of Pigs fiasco in Cuba. It seems we have been divided so much that our failure is inevitable. We are being torn apart slowly, but surely. Some of the hatred posted in the comments section of stories now whether it be racial, political, or just plain arguing over nothingness is proof in of itself how divided we are.

Multiculturalism can be a good thing. The problem is that technology, the internet and various other forms of communication, has slammed the world together before we were ready. You have many people still alive who had never seen a different ethnic group, other than black and/or white, and now they are bombarded with the world. When they did see or hear about these people in the news, much of what they "learned" were complete falsehoods and they passed on to their children and their children. Now we have to "unlearn" the falsehoods we were bred with and learn the truth. I'm not just talking about Americans, I'm talking about the world and all it's inhabitants. Communications technology has outpaced our learning too quickly and too long, that is where we need to correct things.
It was Bush Sr. that sent American troops into Somalia during the last few months of his term of office. They were specifically tasked with performing humanitarian aid only, and refused to get involved in the local political struggle, even when Somalis would report the exact location of stores of military weapons. These weapons which could have been secured by US forces soon became the means whereby the various factions gained power and warlords with their private armies were established.
It almost appears that Bush purposely got the US involved in Somalia but prevented the troops from properly securing the situation, so he could hand off a country in chaos to Clinton. The military weapons used in the Blackhawk Down incident were probably among those that could have been captured by US forces if Bush Sr. had permitted it.

Switch it around and apply it to these so called "American" terrorists; THEY are the ones who gave up essential liberty for a little temporary safety (VERY temporary for a Drone). So they DESERVE neither liberty NOR safety. In their radical islamic society they don't have essential liberty so he gave his up when he left the US for those bunch of pedophile worshipping, warmongering, sharia law wanting rag headed freaks across the big pond. The reason why our government allowed for a bunch of somalians was to help in the illicit drug trade in the US. I can't think of any other reasons. Voter in LA, Yes Lincoln was a Republican as was Teddy Roosevelt. Lincoln and TR both would no longer be able to stay in their party. Because their party is not the same as it was during their times. Related to this news article, the real issue we need to deal with is the killing of Americans, by our government, without a trial or an charges being presented. I understand why we are using drones to kill people that we feel are engaged in terrorism. However, once ratified, this is a slippery slope. A small step from killing a teenage American as collateral damage in a drone strike in Yemen to killing Americans in the US for suspected terrorist activity.
We can not give into the terrorists and let them destroy our society and civil rights. Protecting what makes our country great is as important as protecting the lives of Americans.

As for American born suicide bombers blowing themselves up in Somalia, I have nothing against them recruiting more idiots to go there and 'live the dream'. People, why do we always have political debates? As many people have "proven" with their "facts", both dems and rep have started(escalated) military actions against other countries. It doesn't matter who you vote for, the end result is always the same. "But this candidate stands for this, they made this campaign promise". Seriously, anyone who holds office higher than the president of the PTA knows how government works and the corruption behind it. Every 4 years most of America seems to get amnesia and forget that campaign promises are just part of the election process and don't mean anything. Big business will always be happy to fill which ever party's pockets they see will help them the most.
The statement that the world hates us because of slavery is ridiculous. We were not the first country to have slavery and there was slavery going on in other countries when we abolished slavery. And Caucasians are not the only race to have slaves. EVERY race has had slaves at some point in history.

flbikerchick! There is a bill being drafted at this very time to do just as you suggested. The bill sponsored by 28 reps. would stop the anchor baby portion of the current law and it has a provision to stop those from foreign countries from getting automatic citizenship when they marry an American. Everyone should contact their respective reps. and voice their opinion about this bill and show support, although to change the current bull, it would have to be voted on by the general public since the bill is part of our constitution.
That's good news, sandia, although that's not exactly what I was suggesting. We do need to put a stop to "anchor babies" and automatic citizenship through marriage, but that won't prevent people from getting temporary visas for work or study. After all, at least some of the 9/11 terrorists were here on visas. And once they're here, it's all too easy for them to just disappear and remain in this country after those visas have expired. Who knows how many terrorists have entered the country in the past years and are still here illegally, but being aided by sympathizers? I'm not one of those people who believe every Muslim or Arab is a terrorist, but it only makes sense to be more cautious about who we let across our borders.

Like Janine said, some of us do. I have nothing against legal immigrants from any country, so long as they immigrate legally with the intention of becoming US citizens, but it's a shame how hard it is for someone to legally get citizenship in this country. We need to make it easier for the legal immigrants, and harder for the illegals from ANY nation, not the other way around.

I grew up watching high-profile professional athletes who had converted to Islam. One I can remember vividly was Chris Jackson, a great basketball player at LSU and later with the Denver Nuggets. I don't know about everyone else, but Islam seems to be the MOST political "religion" on the planet. They have been fighting themselves for over 1000 years, Shia vs Sunni and there are a number of smaller sects that are constantly caught up in it...I can't really understand why Lisa would be considering herself a part of a religion designed to subjugate women...to each his/her own, I guess.

Israel is one of the poorest countries in that part of the world. They are the only Middle Eastern country that DOESN'T have huge Coal, OIL,Natural Gas or other energy resources. A large portion of their farm land must be irrigated. They have a better economy because it is a FREE market one with an elected government. They receive less "foreign aid" money from the US than most of their Arab/Muslim neighbors. The fact that Israel value education and hard work enables them to have a highly skilled labor force, which is lacking in the rest of the region. That is how they EARN their money.

However, at the end of the day, I'm just an American who truly does care for his fellow "human being" (<--insert whatever race, nationality, religion, handicap in the place of human being) so long as he or she respects my right to live according to my choices and values.

Bush had kept his pointy-a** nose out of the 1st gulf war, the Twin Towers would still be standing, and the son's 2 wars that destroyed our economy and so many lives would never have happened. The FACT is, G.W. Bush LET BIN LADEN GO FREE at Tora Bora some 2 months into the war. That could have been the end of our mission. But still, according to the tiny-brains, Bush deserves the credit for Bin Laden's demise; not the president who authorized it. Mind boggling, revisionist stupidity.

I am a native born American and I am also a Muslim. As far as I am concerned these people who fight and kill innocent people in the name of Islam are criminals, and they should be treated as such.

That's very true Jesse. I am a Christian and I respect all beliefs so long as they offer me the same. Americans as a rule are fed up with Islam simply because while their spokespeople say that it a religion of peace our main association with it is violence. I wish more of the hierarchy within the Muslim faith would condemn the extremists, but they don't. If they did I believe that Americans would have a more positive view of Islam as a whole.

That may be true, but the story does NOT indicate that he is of Arabic descent, nor of African descent, etc. It only identifies his parents as "working-class" whereas the others mentioned in the story have their parent(s)' nationality identified. That is the basis of my questioning what turned him. Did he somehow get involved in drugs? How did he meet and marry a Somali woman in San Diego? Did she help turn him? These are all unanswered question. But it changes nothing in regards to the fact that he is now a traitor to this country and should have his citizenship revoked.

Not all Americans support the misdeeds of Israel (illegal settlements, for example), but that doesn't excuse the Palestinians' continued attacks, either. Frankly, I think it's past time that Palestine be given its own territory and be recognized as a nation. Maybe then they would concentrate on nation-building.
What Americans support and what our government does, however, are obviously two very different things.
America is the greatest county in the world. I rose from a history of abuse, and went thru extreme discrimination in the workplace, but I have been able to survive to retire. Do not let the turkeys get you down. Fight them every day. I never received justice, but I fought and survived.

delmore...pardon me while I go get my crying towel, but Harry Truman had the most difficult choice of any American President...either send more Americans/Allies to continue fighting the Japanese back on their own turf (and get most of them killed in the process) or end the war quickly. Japan brought that end upon themselves. Many of my elders (since passed now) were WWII vets and saw first hand what both the Germans and Japanese were doing to civilians during the course of the war (and the years that led up to it.) ALL of these events could not have happened if the leadership of Japan and Germany had surrendered earlier.

You forget one thing, we were not at WAR with Japan when they attacked US... We were not at WAR when the TERRORISTS attacked US on 911... The cities you keep citing were bombed during a time of WAR with civilian loss, and it shortened the WAR to keep both sides from losing more people.
You say the USA uses Terrorist acts during WAR to its advantage; key word is during WAR, and we have a Military Objective... Civilian loss during any, repeat any, war is going to happen and unfortunate!

If you recall the invasion plans for the home islands of Japan estimated 1,000,000 American casualties and as many , if not more Japanese. And we know how their estimates were always low. The two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed less than 250,000, so in all actuality these bombings saved six or more times the lives they took by bringing the war to an end without an invasion.
Also recall that Truman warned Japan that we have a weapon like the world has never seen and asked for their surrender so we would not be forced to use it. Japan declined. After we bombed Hiroshima Truman again warned Japan that we would use this weapon again if they did not surrender. Again, Japan declined. After we bombed Nagasaki Japan's leaders finally understood they were outgunned and finally surrendered. The U.S. did not just show up one morning and nuke Hiroshima by surprise like Japan did at Pearl Harbor.
And one last note. Both Germany and Japan were working on their own atomic bomb and neither one would have hesitated to use it on us, with no warning I might add. At the end of the war the Germans had under development an eight engine bomber they called the Amerika who's sole purpose was to deliver an atomic bomb to the east coast of the U.S. and return. They were definitely planning to use it on us. We just got it working first.

Too bad that some of these people end up identifying with groups that use propaganda to further their fringe causes. It is a reality that we have many confused, angry and hopeless people living here. The richest nation in the world... while the average citizen sees the American dream fading away. We can't keep telling ourselves that anything is possible in the land of the free when we now rank 8th in the industrialized nations for class mobility! If we don't turn this country around, get people back to meaningful work for fair wages, stop the corporate greed, stop further marginalizing the weakest and poorest amongst us...you will most likely see more and more of this. It is a sad time in history.

On the other hand, you've got to really wonder what would have happened if the Israel-Palestine issue was solved, at the very least, with the full implemention of the 1993 Oslo Accords which was supposed to have created a Palestinian state by 1998, 5 years from the signing of the Accords. (Instead, the Israeli Prime Minister who signed on to the Oslo Accords was assessinated by a crazed Jewish settler. Israel then went ahead and doubled its Jewish settlers on Palestinian land and didn't withdraw from the agreed areas as called by the Accords).
I'm under the impression that if the Accords were fully and timely implemented 9/11, and most subsequent terror acts, would not have happened.
The requirement was to ensure Israel's survival by recognition of their right to exist BEFORE there was a state created for the mythical Palestinian.
There has been no such recognition so there is no new Arab state.

Mainly stopping the rocket, mortar, suicide bomber, and other attacks on Israelis civilians and settlements. There really isn't any such thing as a "Palestinian" anyway. "Palestine" was name given to area by Romans when they conquer it and it stuck. That area has been conquer it isn't funny. Arafat was born in Egypt as were his parents. "Palestinian Right of Return"??? BU11SH!T.. They willingly abandoned that property in 1948 because they "wouldn't live under the rule of the JEWS". So, they have NOTHING to return to. All 50,000 of them. They have been living in another country for over 50 years if not their entire lives. Oh, yeah that's right. Only the US grants automatic "birth" citizenship. They get nothing but cloths they have on. Search every house. If so much as a single bullet is found on property, every male member of family over 10 is immediately executed, all children are removed permanently from family and women are sterilized. No breeding of replacements suicide bomber murderers. NO male Family to continue the Muslim "Blood feud". Who We Are And Who We Are Not
By 1948 all the countries that surround Palestine had gained their independence and delineated their borders in their respective constitutions.
That, in itself, defined Palestine.

And never mind the cities of Jerusalem, Meggido, Ashkelon, Jericho, Hebron, Shiloh, Beershebah, Bethel, etc. were ALL FOUNDED, BUILT AND CREATED BY THE CANAANITES AT LEAST 800 YEARS BEFORE ANY JEWS SET FOOT ON THEM.
Most Jews who lived in Palestine before the 1948 War came over AFTER WW2.
When the Arabs came to our aid during that war it was after the Zionist terrorist groups had already expelled over 300,000 Palestinians. These terror groups were so ruthless they managed to expel an additional 500,000 Palestinians and erase over 400 Palestinian villages and towns even after the Arabs intervened.
The state of Israel was established with the help of its terror groups (the Irgun, the Hagannah, the Lehi, the Stern Gang, etc) all of whom had members who either were elected as Prime Ministers of Israel, or chosen to became members of the cabinet by the ruling parties.
Israel didn't have a Prime Minister who was born in Israel until 1996, and by then 7 of the 9 PMs it had were all born outside of Palestine.
The reason we didn't establish Palestine when Gaza was under Egyptian control and the West Bank under Jordanian control was because we wanted to keep the integrity of Palestine as articulated in the 1964 PLO Charter:
"Article 21. The Palestine people believes in the principle of justice, freedom, sovereignty, self-determination, human dignity, and the right of peoples to practice these principles. It also supports all international efforts to bring about peace on the basis of justice and free international co-operation."
"Article 22. The People of Palestine believe in peaceful coexistence on the basis of legal existence, for there can be no coexistence with aggression, nor can there be peace with occupation and colonialism."
And even if we did establish a state back then Israel would have gone ahead with its goal of conquering all of Palestine and "transfering the Palestinians" as they've been saying in everyone of their Zionist manisfestos since the late 1800's, starting with The Jewish State by Theordor Herzl.

The best peace offer Israel ever made would have that country in complete control of all the borders of Palestine, all of its airspace, all of its coastline, and over 80% of its water resources.
International law calls for the end to all military occupation within reasonable time regardless of how the occupied people feel about it, including Hamas.
Hamas is a political party just like all the other Israeli political parties that call for the expulsion of Palestinians or the prevention of a Palestinian state and that run in every Israeli election and have been part of pretty much ever Israeli cabinet.
Hamas is made up of people who have been born into a ruthless military occupation, have gone to school, married and work under it and who're now watching their children and grandchildren and great granchildren being born, going to school, marrying and working (if at all possible) under the same ruthless military occupation.
