Israeli embassy, U.S. tourists among likely targets of Bangkok bomb plot

By Robert Windrem
NBC News

Police raids in Bangkok, Thailand, which netted a suspected Hezbollah operative Thursday and the makings of bomb-making materials Saturday, represent "one of the most credible Israel-focused threats overseas in a long time," said NBC News analyst Roger Cressey, and "very much the real deal" adds NBC News analyst Mike Leiter.

The two analysts referred primarily to the Saturday raid where police confiscated more than 8,800 pounds (4,000 kilograms) of urea fertilizer and several gallons of liquid ammonium nitrate found in a warehouse in Samut Sakhon, on the western outskirts of Bangkok.

Officials in the U.S. and Israel said Hezbollah could have been planning an attack on the Israeli embassy in downtown Bangkok, near various tourist sites, say Cressey and Leiter. Hezbollah, a Shi'ite Islamist group in Lebanon backed by Syria and Iran, is on the U.S. blacklist of foreign terrorist organizations.

The raid caused both the U.S. and Israel to issue public travel warnings urging their citizens to be cautious.

Information that led to the raid was relayed to Thai police by Israeli intelligence. Police detained a Swedish national of Lebanese origin with alleged links to pro-Iranian Hezbollah militants on Thursday. The intelligence indicated a plot could be carried out between between Friday and Sunday.

Cressey said the fear was that Hezbollah was constructing a large bomb that would have caused a devastating blast in an area that many Americans visit.

"There would have been a lot of collateral damage," said Cressey, a former member of the U.S. National Security Council staff.

Moreover, both analysts note they've been told the threat may not be over, that at least one other operative is being sought. Leiter, former director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center, says there is a fear about plots against "secondary targets", either tourist or Jewish, in the Thai capital.

As for the rationale for the attack, Cressey said, "All theories make sense. Can't rank order them yet," while Leiter noted, "It's pretty consistent with the increase in tension between Israel and Iran." Iran has vowed revenge for the killings of its nuclear scientists, which it has blamed on Israel and the U.S.

One possibility raised by both is Hezbollah revenge for the Israeli killing on Imad Mugniyah, the Hezbollah leader who died in a car bombing in downtown Damascus nearly four years ago on February 12, 2008.  Mugniyah was responsible for many anti-American and anti-Israeli terrorist attacks, including the bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut in 1983, the Marine Barracks bombing in 1983 and the bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires in 1992. Hezbollah vowed revenge for that killing but never carried out attacks that it tied to Mugniyah's death.

Background on the incident from the Associated Press:

National police chief Priewpan Damapong told reporters the suspect, named as Atris Hussein, had given police an address where bomb-making material was being kept.

Priewpan said the suspect had maintained that his group had not planned an attack in Thailand but intended to transport the substances to a third country, which he would not name.

Asked about the discovery, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told reporters: "I have been informed. I would like to ask people not to panic. We are currently in control of the situation."

Thai officials have seemed irritated by travel advisories issued by the U.S. and Israeli governments, followed by several more since Friday. Foreign Minister Surapong Towijakchaikul said diplomats from countries that had issued warnings would meet with him for an explanation on Monday.

Tourism is a big money-earner for Thailand, and ministers are keen not to deter travelers, especially after the hit to tourism from severe flooding in 2011 and political unrest in 2010.

Yingluck also instructed the defense ministry to consult U.S. embassy officials to discuss its terror warning and seek a retraction.

However, an embassy spokesman later said the terror warning to its citizens was valid and the United States had no plan to rescind it.

Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha told reporters in the northern city of Chiang Mai on Sunday that Thailand was not the target, although officials have also said that areas of Bangkok frequented by Westerners and Israelis could be hit.

Yuthasak said that a second suspect had managed to leave the country.

Great... Even more Americans may die because of our support for the failed experiment known as the State of Israel. I hope the pro-Israel lobby can sleep at night, because they have a lot of blood on their hands.

Hmmm... A brief look at world history shows that before the State of Israel people still had plenty of things to fight over, oh right, per Mein Kampf that was all the Jews fault. Did you figure out how the State of Israel ties into the fighting going on in Iraq now? America is out of there, but the Shiites and the Sunnis are still killing each other, in India and Pakistan there is all sorts of religious strife, never mind in Africa where genocide is being committed and no one gives a damn.

Get your head out of the sand and recognize what terrorism is and the Radical Islam that drives it before it comes to get you. Getting rid of Israel will only embolden these people and will not appease them one bit.

This isn't about Israel's existence as a state, which is a foregone conclusion decades old. Ultimately, it's about Iran and its support of worldwide terror sponsored by Iran through its support of terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah. Iran is now an influence throughout South America even to the extent that they will garner friendly relations with Christian countries. Something unheard of just a few years ago. A U.S. government report was recently given to the head of Homeland Security indicating a possible connection between Iranian operatives through Hezbollah and Drug Kingpins in Mexico. This whole Iranian thing has gone way beyond anyone's support of Israel or anyone else. If Israel never existed Iran would have the exact same plans. Ultimately, those plans are directly aimed at the United States and her citizens.

mike christain ---- Your view is reminiscent or that of Neville Chamberlain in 1938 when he only cared about his homeland, England , and not about somebody else's , the Sudetenland. That shortsighted view led to WW2 and the deaths of tens of millions of human beings.

And, by the way, we're already at war, in case you were unaware. Radical Islam in the guise of Al Qaeda declared war against us 10 years ago.

American lives has nothing to do with Israel. Israel is not an experiment, the Jews have lived there for thousands of years. It it weren't for idiots like the Europeans and the Americans at the start of WWII, no holocaust, no mid east problem. But of course no one lifted a finger to help until it was to late.

Regardless of Israel's existence, Iran, thru their puppets, will continue to attack the US as long as the current illegal government of Iran continues in power, spreading terror throughout their country and the rest of the world.

I am fortunate to know several Persians, and they are not bad people. They just have a bad government that terrorizes their own citizens.

That's a rather broad brush you're painting with. Saying that all Muslims want to kill "infidels" is like saying that, because of the Crusades and the Inquisition, all Christians wanted to rid the earth of anyone who was not Christian. That couldn't be further from the truth. ALL religions have their extremists. By the by, to truly understand the Qur'an, one has to take into consideration the context in which it was written.

When the Qur'an was written, it was a much different world back then. Islam was a newcomer and it faced attacks from Christians, Jews and the indigenous polytheistic religions of the Arabian Peninsula. Muslims were fighting the battle for their own existence; that explains the strong language towards non-Muslims in the Qur'an. Islam was under attack, so in their minds, they were justified in taking whatever measures were necessary to preserve their existence, much the same as what happened with the early Christian community.

incident_man ---- Were do I say " all " ? You create a straw man and then attack him. As to your claim that ALL religions have their extremists , why aren't Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Jews, Hijacking planes and flying them into buildings and murdering thousands? Why aren't they planting bombs on trains and murdering hundreds of innocents? Why aren't they strapping on bombs and walking into weddings, markets, restaurants, etc. and murdering thousands and thousands of innocent humans? The ratio of Muslim violence to the violence of other religions is something like 10,000 to 1. Do you see the difference?

As to the Qur'an and when it was written, the problem is Muhammad said kill non-Muslims and impose Islam over the entire world. He did not say only do this in the 7th century. He placed no time limit on when this was to be done. Muslims have been doing this ever since. You need to instruct them about your interpretation and how they are laboring under a misconception. See what kind of a reception your view receives. If you want a very recent example of their modus operandi, check out the news from Nigeria where on Christmas Muslims murdered Christians and ordered them out of Nigeria.

Hezbollah is Hezbollah, strickly because Israel invaded Lebanon and occupied Lebanon for 18 years. If Israel had stayed in Israel, there would never have been a Hezbollah. "Freedom fighters are dedicated to ridding Lebanon of Israeli troops and now perhaps, of seeking revenge for the Israeli killing of over a thousand people, mostly Lebanese civilians in 2006. Israel used F16s, tanks and Apache helicopters to savagely attack a country, which is friendly to the USA.

Note: The article said: Police raids in Bangkok, Thailand, which netted a suspected Hezbollah operative. We should wait till we have proof of anything. It appears the explosives they were trying to make, are constructed using fertilizer, something I would not suspect of an organized or state sponsored unit. There are many explosives, such a C4, which would be easily available to an organized group of terrorists. This may be one or a few individuals with no access to C4 or the like.

Ralph, your simple minded analysis is incredible. You ignore the demographic shift in Lebanon from a majority Christian state to a majority Muslim state with Shiites being the largest Muslim group. Study the civil war in Lebanon that started in 1970's; first between Maronite and Palestinians, then Sunnis got involved then Shiites got involved. Along the way both Syria and Israel got involved. I guess you don't want all these details you just want your simple minded explanation.

The reputation of Thailand as a haven for pedophiles and terrorists isn't helped by the Thai government's cover-up strategies.

What helps to keep terrorist attacks at a minimum in Bangkok is that the repressed and murderous islamofascists of the world use it as their playground for drink, drugs, and sins of the flesh.

I have to agree With Jack-1522032.The Muslims are getting outta hand, and the so called peace-full Muslims sit on their ass and are too scared to stand up and the majority condone what happens. It is gonna be A total war,and if you are Muslim, then you better pick your side and stand up or die with the radicals. To the radicals I say Allah go to hell whence you came from. You want war with everybody and your time is coming to an end.You claim in one breath Allah is for peace and in another you commit killings in the name of Allah and all who will not convert to this monster of hate and death. The Koran was and is not a bible as the Imans added to it to keep all Muslims in their place for fear of mutulation or death. If a Mortal man changes a scripture then he alone has changed the belief. As for who will survive after all of this ,it will be a very few, left to continue mankind.God and Jesus are my faith ,but neither one of them want me to kill anyone who wont seek them out.I wont kill in the name of God for he is a forgiving God,unlike Allah who wants all dead who wont convert, sounds like you convert or die,no other choices. That said,Allah has one thing on his mind (pretty close ,if not exact to what Satan wants)Total world domination and all under his controll

I'm not a religious person by a long shot...but the Bible has some great stories...the first and last stories are actually different ways of describing the same thing.... which is the fate of mankind. Genesis to me is not a story of creation but one of acknowledging that humans were given the Garden of Eden (Earth) and will be cast out by the stupidity of our intelligence. Which then ties in with Armageddon.

In addition to Hussein Atris- there are two other Lebanese on lam in Thailand with Sweidh passports. They are part of a 5 men cell. Hussein Atris rented the place in Thailand where they found all the bombmaking material for over a year at that location. Want to see his photo and a glimpse of a Sweish passport- go to http://www/expressen.se/nyheter/1,2680502/terrorgripne-husseins-fru-han-skulle-kopa-datorer. Then http://www.dn.se/nyheter/varlden/bombkemikalier`hittade-nara-bangkok -there are pictures of the raid. Then http://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/article14217607.ab and the rented place where they found the bombmaking materials is in Samut Sakhon in southern section of Bangkok. The only question I have why has it taken 72 hrs for US to report this?

I am just sick and tired of this war mongering. I want our politicians to work on real issues, bring those jobs back from China and India. Focus on our economy! China must be laughing about all of these ridiculous stories, while making their country stronger day by day.

Mr Binke, As you "love & pray for them" the rest of us will help to control their population. "Airborne has a saying; kill em all & let God sort em out". And while you're praying for them, ya might want to think about praying for the men & women protecting you're right to be STUPID. And, while you are praying for them, ya might also want to add, that they have a change of heart before they meet the business end of a .223, 7.62, or 50 calibre obituary.

Keep it in mind that Thai police will only do police work if a) there's money to be made, b) a promotion to be earned (that is, a bigger share of the proceeds of graft), or c) you're able to shame or cajole them.

Really sad, seems like Israel, and America are hell bent on starting another war. We illegally invaded Iraq on the premise of a Cheney lie of WMD, which they never found, now it's almost the same premise, telling Iran they can't have "nuclear energy." America and Israel have enough nuclear weapons to kill the world a thousand times over, and they are worried about Iran. Why is it so important for either America, or Israel to have a first strike on Iran? IF Iran struck first, don't you think Israel, and America can stop whatever Iran starts?

There's more to this than meets the eye, it's called

mosh, Iran has provoked the United States in every way short of ravishing Michelle Obama on the White House lawn. They have announced their nuclear power, threatened to cut off the world's oil supply via the Straits of Hormuz, harassed American ships and sentenced an American citizen to death. Oh, and this is at a time when Republican Warhawks are running for the presidency, and the Iranians know it. If anyone is hell bent on starting another war, it's Iran.

Casandra...the United States has attacked or invaded every country that has a border with Iran, we have military bases and personnel in almost every country that borders Iran, we have warships off their coast, Fly drones over their airspace, have CIA agents on the ground Inside Iran, we have a cynical history of ovethrowing their elected president and imstalling our Puppet who remained in power for 25 years, we aided and supported Saddam Hussein in a proxy war of agression against Iran, we have imposed sanctions which only hurt the Iranian people........so tell me again...who is the agressor nation??

Secretary of Defense Stated on Face the Nation that Iran was NOT trying to develop a nuclear weapon........

The US has 8000 operational nukes and Isreal has over 300..... The US is trying to Use a treaty of which they themselves are not signatores to justify a more overt war against Iran

fb, even if all this were true, it would not explain why Iran is deliberately provoking us, knowing that this might lead to the election of a real Warhawk president.

Cassandra.......even it all were true??? It is true......it just takes minimal research on your part....or provide evidence to the contrary???

In your world ...If Iran had warships off our coast, had imposed sanctions on us, had overthrown our govt once before, If they were flying drones over our airspace, has bases and military in Canada and Mexico and we were capturing their Inltelligence agents here in the US...then I guess the US would be considered the aggressor???/ Ok...now I get it....

Iran is 8000 miles away, they have absolutley no ability to attack us, they have never attacked the US, they have never threatend the US....

The are not provoking us,,,they are only acting defensively........they are completly surrounded by a superior military power....do they have any rights to defend their nation???

          #20.4 - Wed Jan 18, 2012 11:43 AM EST

fb, I guess you missed the point about Iran's intention to blackmail the whole world by shutting down the oil shipping channels, and thus interrupting international commerce. Iran is playing with fire not with the United States but with the whole World.

Coptic.. and you missed the entire point of my post........Iran is surrounded...The Us flies drones over their airpspace, has CIA agents on the ground inside of Iran, US warships off their coast, The US has military bases and personnel in every country that borders Iran, The US also has a cynical history of overhtrowing Irans elected president and intstalling our Puppet......so my point was...faced with agression from a superior military power...Iran says it will close of the straits if attacked...so go back and read the posts and thread......

Again, the whole purpose of all this military existence is to protect the oil supply. We really need this Canadian oil.

Well... at least for NBC :-)

Is this article "supposed to be considered Newsworthy???????????

Does the world actually need some useless journalist from a useless news agency to write another useless article???

This article is an attempt to export hate where the defenses are low. "Its (somehow) Israel's Fault (not what is clearly spelled out in the Koran, Hadiths, Sira) that Thailand is being attacked" I agree with Kevin #22

As I see it, the Israelis passed along some intelligence that caused a terrorist cell to be broken up before any serious damage was done and in so doing they, the Israelis, saved a lot of lives including a number of American citizens. For some reason Toasty chose to castigate them, the Israelis, for whatever unknown reason he believes.

We have , with Israel, a stalwart alliance and a bond that will probably last for a great long while. But like family members, we will argue, disagree, yell and scream and call each other names. That does not mean we are enemies, it means we are allies, brothers, who do not always agree but who will stand up for one another should such circumstances occur that require it.

This all bought and paid for with American tax dollars. If the U.S. say's it's all tapped out what will Isreal do? What would Isreal say to having U.S. armed forces come over and stay awhile until we no longer need to send military aid, that ok with you?

If the U.S. does not change it's foreign policy with the zionist Israel and force these dogs to end the apartheid that's being imposed on the Palestinians, Hezbollah will be coming to a town near you!

We will experience terror as long as the dogs of Israel are allowed to continue what they are doing.

kud, "Zion" and "Israel" mean the same thing. I know that Zionist has become a dirty word recently, but it means a supporter of Israel. This includes Hadassah, the American Women's Zionist organization, which supports the Hadassah Hospitals that provide fine free medical care to Israelis and Palestinians alike.

so your saying that Hezbollah just wants to kill anyone they can (even if they have nothing to do with Israel and the whole issue with Palestine) Sounds like Israel is right and the entire world should rain down hell on Hezbollah. Only cowards purposefully target innocent people.

Right now the U.S. needs to rebuild its manufacturing base. Unemployment should be 3%. If that means ending subsidising countries hell bent on mutual destruction so be it, there is no need to invest our economy on two trucks we paid for playing chicken, just to leave us holding a hub cap. With the amount of money invested in defence technology we should not have any feet on the ground on any foreign soil. If anyone thinks an oil embargo on Iran will stop the production of nuclear development just look at North Korea, those countries would rather starve there own babies than to stop their ambitions. I think it would be safe to say that all polititions know that. So look at the other things to consider, its getting close to elections , lets see where the mony comes from. Last year the number one export from the U.S. was petroleum products. And now we have a terrorist plot against Americans in Asia that was investigated by the Israelies. When does the movie come out?
