New photos of alleged 9-11 mastermind may have been spirited out of 'Gitmo'

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is seen in one of the photos apparently taken at the Guantanamo detention center and published this week by an Islamist website.

U.S. military officials are investigating whether new images of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, alleged mastermind of al-Qaida’s 9-11 terror attacks, posted on a jihadist website were smuggled out of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Follow Open Channel on Twitter and Facebook.

The photos, which show a relaxed and often smiling Mohammed, were published Wednesday by "Al-Ebdaa," an jihadist media group, and documented by Flashpoint Partners, a global security company run by NBC News terrorism analyst Evan Kohlmann.

Kohlmann said the images appear to have been taken at GTMO, the U.S. Navy base and detention facility in Cuba, where Mohammed is currently facing a military tribunal with four other alleged al-Qaida members on murder and terrorism charges in connection with the 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Pentagon officials told NBC News on Thursday that investigators were attempting to determine if the photos were in fact taken at GTMO or had been photo-shopped. If it is determined that they are photos from GTMO, the investigators would attempt to determine how the photos could have left GTMO.

Under GTMO regulations, unauthorized photos of detainees are not permitted to be taken or distributed.

Mohammed and his fellow defendants, who defiantly refused to enter pleas in their initial appearance before the tribunal early this month, face a possible death penalty if they are found guilty of organizing the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people.

Just google this guy's photos and you will find ton of pictures of him where he looks like he is woken out of bed and looks really unhappy. Then after spending some time with his terrorist brothers in guantanamo he turns into a mini-me Osama! By the way - the guy is a pakistani and was picked up by American forces from his home in Pakistan 4-5 years back.

"Derek" is his nickname. It is a Pashtu word that means "rectum sore from camel dong". He is a "muslim apologist" from some little toilet-paper-free poo-hole in the middle east. The product of many hundreds of generations of 1st cousins marrying 1st cousins.

Is it really that far fetched?

-Gulf of Tonkin got us into Vietnam, thanks to our government

-Sinking of Lusitania got us into WW1 (Germans sure didn't want the US in that war!)

-Tons of evidence the US knew Japan was going to bomb pearl harbor (got us into WW2)

-Korean War (communism)

etc...

History ALWAYS repeats itself, so don't act like I'm the crazy one.

"-Sinking of Lusitania got us into WW1 (Germans sure didn't want the US in that war!)"

You are right, the Germans didn't want war with us. However, the Lusitania was a British ship, so how were the Germans supposed to know that Americans were on board?

"-Tons of evidence the US knew Japan was going to bomb pearl harbor (got us into WW2)"

The USA government had no idea that Japan was going to attack us. A few hours before the attack on Pearl Harbor began, a experimental radar station was in Hawaii. They saw a lot of planes on the radar (which proved it worked), but the workers at the radar station thought it was just American pilots doing training exercises.

"Jet fuel does not burn hot enough to melt steel, do your research people."

Jet fuel alone is not hot enough to burn steel, but when it's combined with a plane that's going hundreds of miles per hour, the impact of the plane with the jet fuel could have destroyed the steel beams.

ted patrick, explosives act as a concussive device and generally causes immediate destruction of surrounding structures within the blast radius. The towers took quite a while to come down, and neither was accompanied by any sort of blast. The WTC's construction was what ultimately failed. The fire proofing just wasn't robust enough to handle the prolonged heat from the raging fire and once compromised the domino effect brought the whole show down. Quit looking into shadows and searching for the bogey man. He's not there my friend.

Jeff I quess you have not researched anything or you are just a liar or shill. The were numourous reports and recordings of explosions. Dozens of firefighters reported explosions along with Barry Jennings who worked with Emergency Management. There are numorous videos of Barry but unfortunetly he may have been murdered not long before the tower report From NIST came out. I and many people are not looking for any "bogey man" by the way is that like a swamp man? It is boogeyman. There are also numorous independent samples/lab reports which all show Thermite which does not need a conconsive report to cut through steel. Barry and the firefighters did report explosions which may have been kickers used to kick out supports after being cut through. You can also see the results of squibs in the videos. Why would Building 7 fall with only smaller fires in it and without any major damage. These three building are the only steel buildings in history to fall due to fire. Along with falling a near terminal velocity into their own footprint and not one falling over???? There is just way to much BS that does not add up. Nevermind the reports from the FBI and CIA whistle blowers, I just also wonder how many have been gagged.

Also actually the boogeyman is real and he/she/they work in DC and you better damn well be scared

Did it never occur to you that all this conspiracy stuff and "so called" whistle blowers and "independent reports" are fabrications to keep you in the dark? No? What a surprise. What better way to keep the tin foil hat crowd confused than putting out disinformation. Something the three letter places excels at. I saw we need to fire all building demoliton teams. It has now been proven you can take old salvage planes and no matter how you hit the building or how high up on them you can get them to fall straight down. We no longer will need the expenisive cost associated with demoing old buildings. use a plane and jet fuel and forget the overpriced consultants to insure it falls in on itself. No longer do we need days to set explosives and recheck them, calibrate or time the detonations, and we do not need to waste time studying and studying what we think the explosions will do.

Metal does not need to "Melt" or "Explode" to fall down. All it needs to do is "Deform". When you put tons of weight on metal that is in the process of "Deforming", it collapses. Anything underneath is also "DESTROYED".

Maybe you should take a "Metallurgy" class some day so you can learn the properties of all the different types of metals that are used in Buildings and the properties thereof, before you spout off a bunch of dumbazz "truther" BULSH!!

Derek, after 40 years of hearing all the JFK conspiracy theories some cable TV channel actually proved that the so called "magic bullet" wasn't so magic. How did they do it? They simply duplicated the exact positions of the bodies in the car and made the shot with a duplicate weapon.

You can believe in all the wacko sh!t you want. If you actually knew anything about load bearing and steel fabrication you would know that those buildings failed by losing their load bearing support through having the strength of the building (it's outer walls" destroyed and the rest was just a matter of heat weakening some rather small bolted connections and light weight re-bar trusses that caused the interior floors to collapse in pancake fashion. Once the connection between the floors and outer walls failed the buildings lost all strength. Large buildings are brought down usingexplosives by snapping the cement columns. Something the World Trade towers did not have. It also takes months to prepare a building for destruction.

Yes the US government feared the Japanese were on the verge of attacking us but not one shred of evidence has pointed to any actual knowledge of time and place. Try doing a lot, a WHOLE LOT more reading before you talk.

    BTW, ELVIS IS DEAD TOO!

You don't have to explain to me how structures are built, i am an ironworker and have built several these type of structures. I listened to all the facts that the government provided and what the other side provided. There are to many descepancies in the government's facts. I don't want to believe that our own government was involved. But Their continued actions since 911 of chipping away our rights in the name of fighting terrorism seems to point to something else much larger. I am not looking for a boogeyman i am just looking for the truth. I don't have faith in our government to tell us what happened, They have proven time and time again that they can't be trusted. I don't want to insult anyone here. I was just defending someone from the name calling. Those actions really suck and are unproductive.

                  Slodon,

                  1. No steel building other than the WTC has ever collapsed due to any fire of any sort.
                  2. A certain temperature may weaken the iron, but it is incapable of melting any of it o matter how large or or how small.

Jet A is the same stuff burned in conventional steel wall heaters. In an open-air office fire such as that at WTC (called a "dirty burn" kerosene or any hydrocarbon will burn at around 500-700F (260C to 371C). The FEMA report on 911 said that the jet fuel burned off after a few minutes and the fires from the office furniture and carpets were about 560F (293C) The special structural steel of the WTC has over 98% of its strength at those temperatures, and the WTC was built to hold 5 times its load.

In a "controlled burn" (where oxygen and fuel are regulated in an optimal mix), jet fuel will reach a maximum temperature of 1800F(982C), which is still not anywhere near the temperature required to weaken the steel girders of a building to the point that the entire building plummeted to the ground. Yet molten steel was reported below the towers, suggesting that a very powerful "fuel" was used, set to burn or explode BELOW the building, not at its top. Thermite, an HTA (high-temperature accelerant) typically used in military operations, would have been able to liquefy the steel. Thermite can reach a temperature of 4500F (2482C) in 2 seconds, and steel begins to melt at 2750F (1510C).

I'm not sure where you earned your engineering degree, but you are only showing part of what was reported on the WTC collapse. You conveniently left out column distortion and loss of strength due to temperature gradients. Heat one side, leave the other side cool, wait for thermal expansion and stress/loss of strength occurs. Bucking failures follow.

I graduated with a civil engineering degree in 2003. This topic was covered extensively in our structural steel design class, taken in 2002. I can't find all of my calculations, but here is a link:

"No steel building other than the WTC has ever collapsed due to any fire of any sort. "

The WTC didn't fall because of the fire, it fell from the big explosion that made a giant hole in the tower. When it made the big hole in the building, it destroyed many steel beams (The steel beams were destroyed by the impact of the plane, not the jet fuel), so the remaining steel beams had to support a lot of extra weight. Eventually, the extra weight on the other steel beams was so intense, the beams just gave away.

The strength of structural steel degrades rather quickly above 400F. Here's a chart:

Random, the weight of several floors on one single weakened floor would create a domino effect, each floor receiving an accumulation of ten or twenty floors. No building is built that could withstand that progressively greater accumulated weight. That fact is why engineers design buildings like an erector set. The building components together are strong, but in disarray, that strength is lost.

You're right Dasvet. Now, if the plane flew into the top of the building, the WTC probably wouldn't have gone down since the steel beams below the impact wouldn't be supporting much extra weight.

...and the Titanic was an unsinkable cruise ship with a steel hull nearly 3/4'' thick. No way an ice cube sliced open the hull and sank it on it's maiden voyage! Wait, how is it that 3/4'' steel can float? Now think about a jet fuel bomb weighing over 90 tons carrying 15 tons of jet fuel explosives traveling at 200 miles per hour. While I too was amazed at the collapse of the towers, one has to acknowledge the catastrophic force behind these events. To deny it is to believe that Titanic hit something other than an iceberg hundreds of miles out in the open ocean.

I think it is more like the human brain to search for an unlikely cause of events than to accept the obvious, catastrophic impact and explosion that destroyed the building, weakened the structure and caused the collapse. Lastly, if some terror group had explosives in place to collapse the building why did they need to hijack all of those planes?

Oh that's right, they already were, and were found guilty and convicted of war crimes...

The good old days of Code Pink, shoe throwing and where you and the libs could blame everything on Bush... must suck for libs in a way having Obama as president since his hope and change hasn't amounted to jack and now he's accountable....

If jam really wanted to bring herself to today, she would realize that big, bad Gitmo continues to exist, that we are using drones around the world to pick off insurgents, over the last few years the US military has been sent into over 6 African nations, has been used to fight in Libya, continues to work/fight in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc.

They can really sling the dung at others, but it's hush hush when it's their own guy/administration. Well jam, what do you think about yesterday's drone attack in Packistan (crossing international borders again) that killed atleast 10 in a mosque. If it was in GWB's administration it would be treasonous, violates international laws and soverignty, overstepping powers, etc. etc. So, what is it now??

You know why he's relaxed- he has nothing to worry about. He's got a team of lawyers protecting him, he's got comfortable accomodations, 3 meals a day to his religious standards, the government just built him a $300,000 soccer field for his recreation, he's got access to books, access to computers, if I recall correctly he can get some visitors, he gets mail, etc. The guy has it far better than ever before. He'll go to trial, get to prolong it by years through playing games that cost us millions, then appeal- over and over again.

He'll get the death penalty at least a few years after he dies.

So, how did the photos get out? I'd guess it was a few ways- his lawyers, his publicist/agent, maybe paid off a few guards, gave them to a released friend.

if we have to change the laws on how we should treat him, we should do the same thing to other criminals in US who raped many and killed many and so on....

Our laws are so easy on criminals.. they always end up going back to prison because it s a ood break for them! if our prisons were though enough! none of them would come back again! things would be a lot different but it s too late now because we already wrote and agreed to the constitution and amendments

I wonder why they always wait for something that they already know it s going to happen and let it happen and then take action.

Was it not a fair description of the man pictured? As for airplane. I honestly don't think I would have an issue with it. The only problem I ever had on a plane was from a white business traveler who got upset when I remarked that I felt sorry for guys who did their Christmas shopping at sky mall. Touched a nerve apparently.

I'm a child of the 60's, so sitting next to hairy freaks is a long practiced skill. I'd love to sit next to old Kalid....but...I don't think he'd be so happy with me.

However, as the Koran suggests, he might have to be choked to death for bringing shame on his family.

That works better if you are sitting next to them.

first they torture the heck out of him (actually kill him) then they call the medics in and practice bringing him back to life (using cpr and drugs), then they torture him again to see if he found anything out while he was dead.
