In rare public rebuke, UN chief tells Iranian leaders to tone down rhetoric

Kathy Willens / AP

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

In an extraordinary but little-noticed public rebuke, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has condemned Iran’s supreme religious leader and president for “threatening Israel’s existence” in “offensive and inflammatory” comments about the Jewish state.

Ban’s rare public criticism on Friday did not noticeably cool the increasingly hostile public exchanges between Tehran and Jerusalem. On Tuesday, Iran’s mission to the United Nations complained about the “irony” of the U.N. leader’s failure to condemn Israeli officials for employing similar rhetoric.

In Friday’s statement, Ban singled out Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for their recent comments.

"The Secretary-General is dismayed by the remarks threatening Israel’s existence attributed over the last two days to the Supreme Leader and the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran," Ban wrote. "The Secretary-General condemns these offensive and inflammatory statements.

"The Secretary-General believes that all leaders in the region should use their voices at this time to lower, rather than to escalate, tensions.  In accordance with the United Nations Charter, all members must refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State."

The condemnation, which didn't get much attention, went beyond any statement by Ban or previous secretaries-general on the tensions between Israel and Iran, an indication, say U.S. officials, that the U.N is taking Iran's anti-Israeli rhetoric seriously.

Apparently stung by the criticism, Iran on Tuesday wrote to the U.N. Security Council that Israeli officials have recently threatened to bomb Iran's nuclear program. It also states that the U.N. Security Council and "other relevant organs of the United Nations" have had "no reaction" to Israeli threats and in some cases have "aligned themselves with such statements."

The diplomatic equivalent of a shouting match began Thursday with comments by Khamenei on Quds Day, when Iran annually pledges solidarity with Palestinian groups and demands an end to Israeli control of Jerusalem.

"The light of hope will shine on the Palestinian issue, and this Islamic land will certainly be returned to the Palestinian nation, and the superfluous and fake Zionist [regime] will disappear from the landscape," the 72-year-old cleric was quoted as saying.

On the same day, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that while "there are risks” in an Israeli attack on Iran, “It's infinitely more dangerous, complicated, complex and costly in human lives and resources to deal with a nuclear Iran in the future.” His comments echoed those of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who suggested on Aug. 1 that a military strike against Iran’s nuclear program may be imminent.  "Time to resolve this issue peacefully is running out," he said.

On Friday, Ahmadinejad, speaking on Iranian television, made some of his most extreme comments about Israel since becoming president of the Islamic Republic.

“The Zionist regime and the Zionists are a cancerous tumor. Even if one cell of them is left in one inch of (Palestinian) land, in the future this story (of Israel’s existence) will repeat,” Ahmadinejad said. "The nations of the region will soon finish off the usurpers in the Palestinian land."

In responding to Ban’s statement on Tuesday, Iran's deputy ambassador to the U.N., Eshagh Al Habib, wrote to the U.N. Security Council to complain that Israel has repeatedly made threatening comments against Iran without being subjected to similar condemnation.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran expresses, once again, its deep concern over, and strong condemnation of. such a provocative, unwarranted and irresponsible statement by (the Israeli) Prime Minister and Defense Minister as well as other officials of (the) Israeli regime (who) frequently threaten Iran with military strike," wrote Habib.

He closed with a subtle but apparent slap at Ban: "The irony is that there has been no reaction on the part of Western leaders and/or relevant organs of the United Nations, including the United Nations Security Council, vis-a-vis the inflammatory remarks and baseless allegations leveled against Iran's peaceful nuclear program,” Habib wrote. “Rather some even spare no occasion to align themselves with such statements."

Diplomatic sources say that the rhetoric is likely to increase despite Ban's condemnation. They note that Ahmadinejad is likely to condemn Israel even more forcibly next month when he is expected in New York for the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. It will be the Iranian president's last speech to the General Assembly as Iran's president before his term runs out in June.

You know I am going to charge of this situation and tell Ban Kan Moon and the whole UN to go to hell , they have proved that they are one sided asss holes , What they need to do is admit that Alqaida in Syria and denounce the violence they bringing to that country , and tell their beloved Israel to tone their attack down , and quit threatening all these countries Iran , Syria and Lebanon , they need to know that these countries not going to put up with BS anymore , No body respect this ass hole any more , he is getting paid by these Qataris and Saudis , these countries think they can buy any body and any country with their money , we should have taught them a lesson after 9/11 , instead , we went after the wrong countries , but that's normal in our politicians case , The American people should take charge and let these politicians know that our interest comes first and second and third , and if they want to take of other countries , let them move over there .

Your knowledge of the Israeli and middle east situation in general seems to be.... obscured? Maybe you need a crash course lesson in the Israel situation but last I checked Israel has enough on it's hands with trying to find a way to incorporate a Palestinian state it doesn't need any more attention past its borders. Unfortunately for them they are surrounded by religious extreme regimes who constantly not only threaten, but continuously support or contribute to acts of terrorism against them. As far as Iran is concerned, the threats come from Iran, not Isreal. Lebanon was responsible for allowing Hezbollah to shoot rockets into Israel from its territory as lately as 2006? And ALL of them declared war on Israel within days of Israel declaring independence.

I rarely agree with what our government does and how it handles things but regardless of that, I will stand by the Israelis full fledged just like I would a number of countries. Anyone who goes beyond the 'our government sucks' and starts stating they agree or side with Iran in situations like this is a scary thought.

"Iran's mission to the United Nations complained about the "irony" of the U.N. leader's failure to condemn Israeli officials for employing similar rhetoric."

They did not, they never said Iran was a "cancerous tumor" nor that it should be destroyed. What they want is for you (Iranian government) to stop your nuclear bs as they feel threatened, and for good reasons if we judge by your comments.

"and this Islamic land will certainly be returned to the Palestinian nation"

It is NOT an Islamic land. Please read the history of Israel if you don't believe me, they have been there for thousands of years, long before Islam even existed. In fact the Crusades started after muslims invaded the area and the Byzantine Emperor himself asked Christians to come help. Even Iran was not an Islamic land, it was invaded and conquered by muslims, persians were originally zoroastrians, not muslims. And the zoroastrian citizens who are still in Iran/Persia are treated unfairly compared to the muslim citizens.

And Cyrus the Great would be ashamed of you two Ahmadinejad and Khamenei.

And free all the human rights activists, the journalists, the lawyers, the students that you have jailed. You hypocrits, pretending to care about another nation, while you jail and kill your own citizens. Shame on you Ahmadinejad and Khamenei.

Israel has enough nuclear warheads to give Iran's leaders there dreams. I hope it does not come to that but since Iran and the other Muslim extremist have decided it's more fun to see if the virgins are there who is willing to say no?

On another note Pakistan refugees did not exist until they were made up by the Muslim states.

I just wish to express my thanks to the President Obama for bringing such peaceful change to the middle east. I also wish to congratulate the Union leader's who were supporting this change and of course the propaganda press of the tingle up the leg president.

Isn't it amazing how Democrats have decided that extremist Muslims are to be trusted yet denigrate the tea party for their desire to go back to the constitution.

Vote accordingly America you might not get a second shot of correcting the mistake, Also go see the Movie Obama 2016 it's based on Obama's own writing and books.

Studying more recent history of Israel would be of benefit to Anna. Maybe she could start by examining the activities of the Stern Gang and Irgun. Even a cursory examination will reveal the terrorist tactics employed by extremist Zionists to force Palistinians out of their own land. The bombing of the King David Hotel (1946) and the Deir Yassin massacre (1948) are just two examples in a very long list.

"It is NOT an Islamic land." And by your logic America is NOT a western land and we should give it back to the "American" Indians.

"And the zoroastrian citizens who are still in Iran/Persia are treated unfairly compared to the muslim citizens." And how are the Palestinian's treated in Israel to this very day? So much for opening up your house for other people in need as the Torah states.

"while you jail and kill your own citizens." And I guess you forgot about the scientists that Israel had murdered?

Israel acts like they are more scared and frightened then most "white" women. You must not sleep very well at night. Maybe if you did not start so much B.S. you would have nothing to worry about. Why the U.S. even cares about if Iran gets nukes is beyond me. We should care more that Japan can build nukes then Iran, but the white women is scared again and is playing/acting as the victim.

Iran could have BOUGHT a nuke already just like they could have BOUGHT the enriched uranium IF THEY REALLY WANTED ONE. The only reason they are doing this is a matter of national pride. Iran should just buy a nuke and say STFU about our program since we ALREADY have one. Israel does not need all the power it has.

A temple is not worth, even if it is THE temple. God never left, he is still here, since he left the temple with you. You simply choose to ignore him, all while you pretend to know everything. Jesus did not agree 100% with the Jewish people now did he, or else why did he die again?

The Lazaro Little squirt? Then it is Mohammed Handjob. What Roosevelt and Churchill imagined with the U.N. has increasingly turned into a paper tiger. The Syria problem could be resolved in a week by the U.S, England, France, Germany and Turkey. Destroy the Syrian airforce, send in the aircraft carriers, and force all parties to sit down at the table and work out a democratic government plan. One month for campaigning and one week for voting and then leave a force for a year to train a true nonsectarian multi religious army and get the hell out.

.......How did they get into this, are they the refugees from Kashmir?

    Aunt Anna

Anna again (once they start, they never stop): That's truly an amazing bit of made up history. Israel Jews actually purchased the land when the state was formed. Did that slight fact miss your study guide.

.....No Anna, there is nothing made up in that history. The Stern Gang, Irgun, Haganah, etc. really existed, and they did commit acts of violence, in some cases murder, prior to the creation of Israel by the U.N. One of their goalss was to terrorize the Arab population into fleeing the area so they could claim the land for themselves and the new state of Israel, and they had success in that goal. It is documented:

NOw, if Jews actually purchased all that land, can you provide a link to prove so, because that completely runs cojnter to what Israel is doing now in the West Bank.

Anna, tell the truth, are you Jewish? Your posts seem to be just a little biased and narrow minded.

John NZ Your knowledge of history is out of date: "Amin al-Husayni, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Chairman of the Arab Higher Committee, had collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II. In 1940, he asked the Axis Powers to acknowledge the Arab right "to settle the question of Jewish elements in Palestine and other Arab countries in accordance with the national and racial interests of the Arabs and along the lines similar to those used to solve the Jewish question in Germany and Italy." In other words to help the Arabs exterminate the Jews. Also dear John when the U.N. voted for a Jewish state in the absolute worst land areas and the Jews accepted this pittance of land as their homeland, 90% of the Arabs living in and around that area evacuated, abandoned and left their homes and land to allow the Arab armies to cut through the abandoned areas without killing residing Arabs so they could massacre all living people, i.e. JEWS. The abandoning Arabs wanted all Israeli men, women and children slaughtered.

Now, Dear John, go and find me conflicting reports. I have the hard copy of all my proof in my filing cabinet. And your written, detailed confirmed contradiction from real sources is .................where?

And John, old war maxim. To the victors belong the spoils. When are the whites in NZ going to give back the land in NZ to the natives, Maoris? You didn't buy it from them. Your ancestors didn't buy it. I read how YOU are able to live there. The pot can't call the kettle black.

Gee doesn't that make you mad??????? The Jews were given a sliver of land to call their own by the UN much smaller than all of NZ that was taken over by the British in 1840 and the Arabs wanted to destroy all the Jews even the women and children. And you approve of all that? Iran still wants to do that and you approve of that too? Tsk, Tsk, Tsk, John, expand your mind, read your history....oh by the way after the British took over all of New Zealand in 1840 the Maori population decreased 40%. Wil Royson You can put your head in the sand and say it didn't happen. It happen with England, Russia, U.S.A. and almost every winning country. Israel after every war took land and all the weapons. Do you know that 95% of damaged tanks can be repaired? And do you know that the Arab tanks captured were repaired and sold abroad by Israel. Israel exchanged captured land from Egypt for a peace treaty. Either you are uninformed, unintelligent or just ignorant.

You want to talk about Japan and Germany and the outcomes of the wwI? I have a wonderful atlas that shows how the boundaries of Europe changed after every war. Yes to the victors belong the spoils. And Wil how much of Germany was under Russian rule for how long? What Japanese islands are still under Russian rule? The Jews got a defensible position on the Golan Heights they didn't have before. The Jews got a peace treaty with Egypt. The Jews got an agreement with Jordan. The Jews will have a wonderful wall against the Palestinians and keep the hot heads bottled up.

And as you are so ignorant, you forget that the right in the GAZA strip built a luxurious shopping mall right in the middle of the Gaza Strip stocked with millions of dollars of smuggled goods? Now WIL if the Jews wanted to teach the rulers of the GAZA STRIP who own and stocked and put their illicit corrupted funds into this shopping mall a lesson, why haven't the Jews when the Gaza Strip Palestinians bombed Israel, just knock out this bastion of capitalism?

So wil, you think if Israel had given the land back, anything would be different? Your comment appears to be more ignorant one.

And why would we want a chunk of land that is thousands of miles away from the homeland? We have a multitude of military bases there; that seems to be enough.

Should I make a list of all the terrorist attacks palestinians committed on israelis? because there is many many of them, and they are not committed by underground groups, they are/were openly supported and encouraged by the palestinian leadership.

It would benefit YOU to know more about Israel. It would also benefit YOU to know more about the activities of palestinians. It is not "black and white" as you seem to think, with israelis being the "bad guys" and palestinians being the "good and innocent guys" (this is however how the medias generally present the situation). It would benefit YOU to know (or remember?) that Haj Amin al-Husseini, who was a muslim leader in Palestine, supported Hitler (how do you think jewish people felt about it?). Terrorism is also openly supported by many - not all - in Palestine. I have an friend (who is an amazing person) who is a human rights activist and actually lives in Israel (he was not born there), at first he joined the palestinians in their fight against Israel, protested with them, but after a while he - unfortunately - realised what was really going on. You also should know that there has always been jewish people in Palestine (they DID try to live in harmony with palestinians, under palestinian rule and shariah law) and in the area in general, they were harassed and persecuted so much, they finally had to leave (and this happened in many countries, not only in (the territory of) Palestine, and Germany, but also many others).

Simply put, Israel is surrounded by countries where many demonize them and wish to destroy them, it is no wonder they feel the need to be armed.

I will repeat again, it is NOT an Islamic land (in fact NONE of the so-called Islamic lands were Islamic to start with, they were all invaded and conquered). And America IS a western land, and eventho obviously there were crimes and injustices committed, present native americans live well here, thank you. They have all the benefits of any american citizen, a native american can also run for president of the United States if he/she wishes, and more, they also have benefits (as tribes) that non native-american citizens do not have. I, myself have native american ancestors (and I am far from being the only one in America with native american ancestry). On the other hand Zoroastrians in Iran cannot run for president, there is many jobs they cannot get because they are not muslims, they also cannot get a job as a Revolutionary guard.

Also one wrong does NOT make 2 rights. But actually the palestinians are generally treated well in Israel, thousands of them go to Israel to get treated in israeli hospitals. Palestinians prisoners in israeli prisons are also treated much better then israeli prisoners in palestians prisons. They were (and still are) also offered citizenship in Israel (and all this despite the fact that they, and other countries like Lebanon (and its Hezbollah), are bent on destroying Israel).

I will not address all your statements, I can see clearly that you are pro-Ahmadinejad and pro-Islamist Iranian Regime, your replies are typical of Ahmadinejad.

Really? Why would a so called loving God even stoop to cursing anyone? So, you have a God that does the same as those you claim are cursing Israel? Why would the creator of all, not want us to curse others, but yet the creator would turn around and do just that? Isn't that like saying, don't do as I do, do as I say? Uh huh, yeah, that's the kind of loving parent we all need, right? That's a great example your church wants the world to follow there Psychotica.

"It does not matter what you think of Israel or her actions; what matters is that you support her 100% because that is the will of God."

Sooo, if Israel thinks it should level Iran, we should stand behind it? Wow, that sure is great thinking on your part there Psychotica, God would love for another war to happen, right? All of that killing is truly something to be proud of. By the way, do people such as yourself EVER think for yourselves without the church telling you how to? Do you even see any moral dilemma in your thinking and statement? I doubt it very much, because you would say "the Bible tells me so".

"To turn against Israel in any way is to commit spiritual suicide and to incite the wrath of God."

No, not really. The church has already come close to causing our spiritual suicide, with it's literal interpretation of the Bible, and teaching it that way. You want this to be a religious war? That is what you are provoking with your statement. Now, is that any way to use God?

Destroy the Syrian airforce, send in the aircraft carriers, and force all parties to sit down at the table and work out a democratic government plan. One month for campaigning and one week for voting and then leave a force for a year to train a true nonsectarian multi religious army and get the hell out.

The pot can't call the kettle black.

big butt crack......Your crack is bigger than your butt. There are about 5 million jews in Israel and about 1.6 billion Muslims. The Muslims have the Jews outnumbered 300 to 1. And you actually believe that 5 million Jews have that much power? Now Iran can count on Russia and China, another 2 billion. That makes the odds about 7 to 1. Don't even consider the economic power. That crack in your butt must be very large for that head to fit in it.

Israel only makes sense when you realize that it is a nearly landlocked piece of land surrounded by people who want to destroy the jews and their nation there. And the Zionist influence often complained about by the rabbit hole crowd is not the group that went to the middle east anyway. They all live in the palaces around the world. The truth is that no one wants the people who went to Israel. No one offered them land anywhere, a place to call home. We are all one family. But we still fight like greedy, little children. And those folks, in particular, are threatened and live in a tenuously held Nation. There is a hate meme still playing in the region. A selfish violent meme. When the men there stop acting from those, things can change.

The U.S., Turkey and Saudi Arabia are funding the radical Islamic groups (some of whom are Al Queda) who are ripping Syria apart so who should "tone things down"?

I'm guessing Iranian dictator and Holocaust denier Ahmadouchebag and his Mullah handlers wet themselves laughing over getting dressed down by UN Chief and all around tough guy Binky Moon.

I should actually give Mr. Moon credit for taking the rare step of identifying the correct nation as a problem. Now if he'll take the next step and truly recognize the danger of a nuclear Iran, there may be some hope for the situation.

No matter how you feel about Israel and their role in Middle East chaos, there should be no denying of the fact that a nuclear armed Iran makes ZERO sense if the goal of global leaders is a peaceful planet. Always focusing on Iranian-Israli hatred misses the point there are plenty of other nations Iran may decide to light up if they join the nuclear club, not the least of which is Saudi Arabia.

Sorry, but I just can't find the energy to get excited about a strongly worded missive sent by the UN SG to the Iranian mullahs. I mean, wow, really, like you think this might work?

The calculus is simple here. Iran will get nuclear weapons or Iran will be attacked in an effort to stop them. All the talk, all the sanctions, just delay the inevitable. So, we either need to learn how to accept a nuclear-armed Iran, or we need to stop whining about attacking their physical plant. Personally I would target for assassination their political/religious leaders who front their nuclear ambitions, but I have a Machiavellian streak.

None of you on this portion of the thread should be talking to the OP about anything regarding reading comprehension or argument relevance. If you knew the slightest thing about either you'd have noticed that the article covered the hypocrisy of the UN's stance on bluster several times. For those of you too stupid to understand that openly discussing plans to unilaterally bomb a sovereign nation actively constitutes a threat as described in this guy's speech? Run back to preschool where the words on the page are twice the size and work your way back up here. You're way ahead of yourself.

As for the likes of xrayspex up here and the rest who want to shill for Netanblahoo and his ilk and who are clearly volunteering their own money, as well as their own lives to head to the front lines and die doing Israel's bidding, (since that's America's "highest" security priority according to certain politicians), what are you all waiting for? Drum rolls? Beat it. Go play "walking flak jacket" for the thinly disguised imperialism that you bought as "caring" so you can line the pockets of the banksters who sent you, while your next of kin can spend the rest of their lives whining about the 1% and "whycome nobody can has a job and whycome we think if we close our eyes and can't see the terrorist proxies we created taking over in every country we told people we attacked to get rid of them, they'll just disappear?

Oh, and keep fist pumping the war effort to put down anyone calling that warmonger Ben and his hypocritical nuke peddling, NPT and inspections shirking, apartheid practicing country on the carpet the second he and his AIPAC goons start throwing those same race cards around that you're sick of seeing thrown down by your minority neighbors. Keep falling into the fetal and voting away your rights so your betters can "protect" you from your enemy who's right behind you as we speak. Give or take 10K miles that is you Idiocracy extras.

You will continue to get the government you deserve, as well as the ending you deserve. The arrogance with which you embrace ignorance frees me to not even have a single damn to give about those who refuse to think for themselves. You won't even make it to footnote status with your masters when its all over. Enjoy.

                      Ofcourse1,

Sorry I have to correct your math regarding populations:

If you get a list of all the countries in the world with reliable estimates of the number of muslims in each, add it up, you will find there are barely 1 billion Muslims in the world, not anywhere near the 1.6 billion figure you put out.

Also the population of China and Russia combined is less than 1.5 billion, not anywhere near your 2 billion figure.

Any of you conspiracy theorists can keep your conspiracies to your 12-member blog's full of twelve year old readers. You can take all of the irrelevance of how our government is or acts but this is black and white. For years the international community has condemned their strive for nuclear warheads and in retaliation too Iran's original remarks (Don't forget 1979 and what the Iran regime did to our embassy) and everything since then has been open and on the table.

To take we are going to keep military options on the table if you are not going to scrap your nuke programs (FOR YEARS), and to compare it to 'EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU MUST DIE' is a giant leap and maybe you should

Run back to preschool where the words on the page are twice the size and work your way back up here.

As far as drums beating, you sound to care more against our cause to defend Israel so why don't you play 'x marks the spot' and go join Iran and we'll see if the 'X' is standing or the walking flak jacket in the end.

You sound like an Iranian Agent. Iran MUST never, ever be allowed to obtain nukes. If they do, the world will be doomed. We all know the sanctions are useless and will never work when it comes to Iran. The only thing that will work is military action, including heavy bombing to end the Iranian nuclear ambitions and their crazy regime for the sake of world peace.

Why hasn't he mentioned the jewish apartheid rulers of Palestine threatening military aggression against iran? The jews are exactly as entitled to a monopoly on nuclear WMD in the Middle East as they are to rule Palestine. That is, not at all.

It is widely believed Israel has that capability, and has not used it. Nor has it mentioned that it exists solely to destroy Iran and that is their mission as a country and as a people.

They have threatened to attack specific military installations pertaining to their nuclear program to prevent them from being able to produce nuclear weapons, but they don't go on to continue saying “The Zionist regime and the Zionists are a cancerous tumor. Even if one cell of them is left in one inch of (Palestinian) land, in the future this story (of Israel’s existence) will repeat,”

Wow, so exterminate every single Jew. You people have a very distraught understanding of the rhetoric at hand. How you can take what Israel is saying and compare it to what Iran is saying shows your ignorance and arrogance is just as bad as the Iranian regime.

Don't even get me started on the Jews not having a right to exist in their own land that they originated from and has been documented CENTURIES before a single palestinian ever stepped foot so do some actual research before blabbing.

Sheeesh, the U.N. has no clout in the World. A perfect example is sending Blue Helmets into a conflict zone with NO WEAPONS, then "retreating" when the conflict gets hot near them (Syria ring a bell ?).

So, here is the U.N.....telling Iran on "what not to say". Heck, the Iranians don't care about the U.N. sanctions and are laughing at the World.

I'm not a fan of Israel and the unconditional support of the U.S. There is, however, a major difference between the rhetoric coming from Iran and that coming from Israel. I've never heard Israel threatened the existence of any other country the way that Iran has threatened Israel. The entire reason for the threatened bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities is because of the statements previously made by Iran. Iran could have nuclear energy without its uranium enrichment program by accepting enriched uranium from other countries. Even though Iran claims its nuclear program is for peaceful use, it has enriched uranium beyond the levels required for nuclear power and is well on its way to the levels required for nuclear weapons. It's not hard to see why the U.N. Secretary General spoke out against Iran, which appears to be provoking an attack. The rhetoric coming from Iran is irrational, Iran appears to be working toward nuclear weapons and Iran has threatened the existence of Israel. Although Iran has several options for resolving the nuclear issue, Iran has left only one option open to Israel.

Sorry I agree with the theory and idea of what you are saying; but the reality of it is completely different. If we stopped the food from being delivered to their plates, they will just go steal it or take it from one of their own. So the only reason sanctions squeeze the citizens is because the regime is adapting to the sanctions and ways around them, or the regime is unwilling to back out of whatever they are doing to have the sanctions imposed. Just like North Korea they've had a bazillion chances to back out of what they are doing, and have been fore-warned EVERY single time we have threatened new sanctions. So regardless of how we have to pressure the regime, in the long run it has to be that countries citizens to pressure their government to make changes. If they are unwilling to stand up for what is causing them then why are you so concerned about it affecting them?

So from the way you phrase that comment 'my turn', your only leaving one option on the table for us "ZIONIST REGIMES" which is military intervention.

Iranian officials have never used terms like wipe Israel off the world map either. Israel and Zionists keep repeating that lie. Iran has said that the Zionist regime would disappear, much like the communist regime in Russia or the Nazi regime in Germany. The Zionist regime is very much like the old Nazi regime of Germany, threatening and attacking their neighbors. Iran simply means they will rot from within.

Here is what Netanyahu had to say about Iran in 1992.

'1992:'Israeli parliamentarian Benjamin Netanyahu tells his colleagues that Iran is 3 to 5
years from being able to produce a nuclear weapon – and that the threat had to
be "uprooted by an international front headed by the US"'.

Just what do you think Netanyahu meant when he said the threat had to be uprooted, Geronimous?

Notice how Netanyahu has been preaching the same tired bulls--t against Iran for decades and Iran still does not have a bomb or even the means to make a bomb. The 3-5 year period for Iran to make a nuclear weapon was up in 1997. Its 2012 and still no nuclear weapon. It appears Netanyahu should give up his prognostication career. Also notice how he wanted the US and an international coalition to do the job, while Israel sits idly by, collecting aid from the US. Screw Israel and stop the aid.

Iran has been at war with the United states since 1979. they captured our embassy against international law. Only a fool would believe that they are not attempting to get a nuclear weapon. Sanctions do not work, and the solution is obvious.

The fact that the UN, which is horribly antisemitic and anti-Israel, is telling the Iranians to tone it down is due to Moon alone. He should be praised for this.

Scott there might be a little history between the Shaws secret police and the CIA . One of the reason the Shaw was chased out was because he was kidnapping and killing his political opponents with Intel support from the CIA and British . And then there's the events in 53 where the US and Brits engineered a plot that overthrew their government , that seemed to be the starting point for neo-con regime changes

The US hasn't been totally honest about events that lead up to the hostage event , and just like my dad never forgave the Japs or the Germans for ww2 , why would you expect Iranians to forgive the US support of the Shaw , not much different than where Syria is today

If Iran develops a Nuclear bomb and dared to use it on Israel what do the think would happen next? Can you imagine the suffering and misery this will bring to the Middle East and the innocent people caught up in the blow back. I suggest bombing Iran's Nuclear facilities is a small price to insure the former never happens. If Iran doesn't want this to happen then quit enriching Nuclear fuel to close to weapons grade and using research and power as a cover. We have agreed to give them Nuclear fuel for any reactor they care to build but this doesn't allow them to build a bomb. The world has seen this ruse before and we are not falling for it and the conquencies of allowing it are too high to ignore!

If you want a war, I suggest you go to Israel and volunteer for the IDF. The war in Iraq, for Israel, will cost America over 3.5 trillion dollars, which is not a small price. It cost Israel nothing, because they only talk the good fight. They send gentiles to fight and die for Israel and it's lies.

The war in Iraq was planned and sold by Zionists, led by Paul Wolfowitz.

Since the distance from the Mediterranean sea to the Palestinian villages is so short (just a very few kilometers), any nuke against Israel will erase the Palestinians too...

(But they will be happy dying as when they wrap themselves with bombs to kill some civilians in the streets of Tel Aviv or in a train in Spain... and alike): they just happily expect to get their virgins in paradise...

They don't really care about the palestinians. If iran has a chance to wipe out israel, do you really think imadinnerjacket will care about the by-kill.

Iran has recently declared their desire to power nuclear submarines....

The U.S. uses uranium enriched to 95% to power subs. First it was for electricity, at 3% enrichment. Then it went to 20% for medical research. Now they are hinting at taking it up to 80-95%, weapons grade.

                                        The world wasn't born yesterday...

Why did Iran have the blueprints for a miniaturized nuclear weapon?

Why does Iran continue to block IAEA inspectors from suspected military sites?

They are not to be trusted. They are fooling nobody but themselves...

Israel has an extremely well trained and well armed military..A war with Iran would be target practice . The Iranians couldn't defeat the Iraqis for years , and we destroyed the Iraqi military in less than 2 months.

The UN has always been and still is irrelevant. It is so mired in political theatre that the weakest of initiatives come from the body as a whole. Every country has a right to defend itself and survive. If Iran verbalizes that they want to wipe Israel off the face of the earth, Israel should take them seriously. If Israel does not take Iran seriously, it is at their own peril. Waiting until Iran sends the first nuclear weapon Israel's way is not an option. In fact, that's the opposite of smart. Most serious minded people believe that Iran is building a nuclear weapon despite their repeated denials.

its normal for iran to make threats because they are so insecure with themselves and their abilities to do just about anything, that they think making threats makes them strong and intimidates others.

their military and their republican guard are not as capable as they think and are just trying to create the image of strength where there is none.

none of the arab countries military are as effective as the impression they try to give.

So far, the only nation paying any attention to the antics of the UN is America. It is absurd to think that Iran will actually listen to Ban Ki Moon and 'tone down their rhetoric'. Iran will do what Iran wants to do and the UN will appear clueless and irrelevant once again.

So close to 5 million people could die in this and that's just in the short term but you're concerned that it will cause Obama to win a second term. You mean the way Bush's cabinet created a need for a second war in Iraq. However, way to keep your eye on the ball in terms of what really would matter. Please renounce your citizenship this country needs a better and smarter class of people and you're dragging down the population. At least, do the world a favor and get yourself neutered.

5 million people will not die.

Israel will do surgical air strikes and go home.

ALMONDHEAD will whine and threaten but will do no more.

If I worked at an Iranian enrichment facility, I would put in my resignation papers soon.

Oh, and as far as Bush and the second war, there were WMD's there.

Saddam sent his planes to Iran (which they now own and operate) and sent his chems to Syria, for "safe keeping".

Nato on the other hand now there's a strategic alliance that knows how to get stuff done.

Iran's problem starts at the top, the way a rotten fish stinks from the head down. Their syphilitic, sociopath leaders -- both secular and clerical -- understand one thing: violence. And violence begets violence, as we all know, so it will just be a matter of time before they end up like Qaddafi, Saddam, and bin Laden; in a nice warm basement suite.

So, since they don't play well with others, and they're not going to change just because the Secretary-General of the U.N. asked them to tone it down, the only way they'll listen is if their ears are made to ring permanently, or if they're incinerated off their heads in a grand but unplanned nuclear explosion in their own uranium (plutonium?) enrichment facilities.

THEN, maybe they'll take the hint. Maybe. I wouldn't stake my money on it, though....

Dont you think that if Israel thought it would finish them they'd do it? The state of Israel has about 400 UN sanctions against them. You think they got to that number by being the good guy? As long as Israel has nuclear weapons the other nations of that area will try to get some. The only reason Israel hasnt used all those nukes is because they know they will become a pariah if they did.
