Benghazi emerges as key recruiting ground for al-Qaida, US intel analysts say

At the consulate where four Americans died security consisted of one U.S. regional security officer and a local militia. Ambassador Chris Stevens often had little or no personal security detail. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

For years, the United States has been concerned about al-Qaida's recruiting along a coastal highway in eastern Libya. The stretch of highway, extending from Derna in the east, through Benghazi — the scene of the attack on a U.S. consulate that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans last week — to Ajdabiya in the southwest, has earned a reputation as a breeding ground not just for Libya's indigenous Islamists, but also for al-Qaida central on the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Robert WindremRobert Windrem is senior investigative producer for NBC News.

Counterterrorism experts inside and outside the U.S. government argue that it is not an exaggeration to suggest that the region around Benghazi has become a crucial wellspring for al-Qaida that rivals even its historic breeding ground — Saudi Arabia.

The area has produced many members of the terrorist organization's leadership, supplanting or at least complementing Saudi and Egyptian roles.

Following Tuesday's deadly attack, U.S. and Libyan officials are trying to determine what role homegrown radical Islamists played in the violence. Many U.S. and Libyan officials now believe the attack was planned, possibly by Libyan jihadists who have returned to their old stomping grounds after having traveled the Islamic world in recent years.

The Libya connection

"Several Libyans have risen in the ranks of al-Qaida, not because they were Libyan, but because they had unique skills and long-term relationships with the senior leadership that go back to the pre-9/11 days in Afghanistan," a U.S. official says.

Here are some of those Libyan fighters who have assumed key positions in the al-Qaida hierarchy in recent years, according to U.S. officials:

- Atiyah Abd Al Rahman, Osama bin Laden's "chief of staff" at the time of his killing in May 2011. Rahman was bin Laden's main contact with al-Qaida commanders, materials found in bin Laden's Pakistan compound showed. Correspondence between the two men grabbed by the Navy SEALs from the compound provided the most revealing details of his plans. After his mentor's death, Rahman was elevated to the No. 2 position in the organization, replacing Ayman al-Zawahiri when he succeeded bin Laden. Three and a half months after bin Laden's death, Rahman was killed in a drone strike.

- Abu Yahya al-Libi, born Mohamed Hassan Qaid, was al-Qaida's second-in-command until he was killed, having succeeded Rahman. Although there is little information about his early years, al-Libi is believed to have lived in eastern Libya. He fought in Afghanistan and studied Islam in Mauritania, in North Africa, and arrived in Iraq in 2002 to join the fight against the U.S. forces. He was captured but escaped from the U.S. detention facility in Bagram, Iraq, in 2005. His story gave him instant credibility, and he began producing videos and audios. He was killed in a drone attack on Mir Ali in North Waziristan in June.

- Abu Faraj al-Libi, born Mustafa al-'Uzayti, was al-Qaida's third in command and the director of its international operations until he was captured by Pakistani forces in May 2005. He is imprisoned at the U.S. naval facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he awaits trial on terrorism charges. Pakistani officials have accused him of playing a lead role in planning a failed plot to simultaneously blow up 10 U.S.-bound passenger jets. He was captured while riding a motorbike on May 2, 2005, and subjected to so-called enhanced interrogation techniques.

- Abu Laith al-Libi was an al-Qaida field commander and spokesman, rising to director of military operations and the No. 4 position in the terrorist group. An outspoken and charismatic leader, he often appeared in videos and on the Internet until his death in 2008. It was he in July 2002 who revealed that bin Laden was still alive, the first comments about the al-Qaida leader's health after the end of the Afghan conflict. Then, in June 2004, he was shown leading an attack on what appeared to be an Afghan military outpost. He worked with the remnants of the Taliban. U.S. officials called him an expert in guerrilla operations. He was killed in a drone attack on Jan. 29, 2008. Adm. Mike McConnell, the former director of national intelligence, said at the time of al-Libi's death that it was "the most serious blow to the group's top leadership since the December 2005 death of then-external operations chief Hamza Rabia."

"Libya, like many other countries, has areas with a history of extremism that the government is trying to counter," a U.S. counterterrorism official told NBC News on condition of anonymity, referring to the Benghazi region.

'Prolific incubator for local extremists'
Evan Kohlmann, a U.S. Justice Department consultant on al-Qaida and an NBC News analyst, said Benghazi's reputation as a hotbed of Islamic militancy was cemented long ago.

"For more than two decades, a slice of eastern Libya near Benghazi, dominated by conservative bastions like the town of Derna, has served as a prolific incubator for local extremists, a surprising number of whom have surfaced as high-profile foreign combatants in conflicts ranging from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, Iraq and now Syria," he said.

"Several of these combatants have taken leading roles in front-line paramilitary organizations, including al-Qaida," Kohlmann added.

Crowds of angry protesters showed up in Kabul, Afghanistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The violent uprising followed a deadly weekend marking the deaths of eight International Security Assistance Force members. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

An NBC News analysis of known al-Qaida leaders bears that out, indicating that the nearly 300-mile corridor between the desert and the Mediterranean Sea has produced more senior al-Qaida members than anywhere else in the Islamic world over the past seven years.

The attack on the Libyan consulate, as it happened

Among them: al-Qaida's last two seconds-in-command, as well as its international operations director (the No. 3 position in al-Qaida leadership) and its military commander — No. 4 in the hierarchy and a position typically held by some of its more charismatic propagandists. Each became a high-value target for the United States, and their deaths or captures have been trumpeted by U.S. intelligence and counterterrorism agencies.

"Leadership in al-Qaida circles tends to go in waves as colleagues bring with them established friends because of established trust," said Michael E. Leiter, former director of the National Counter Terrorism Center and now an NBC News analyst.

"For the longest time, it was what was colloquially known as the Egyptian Mafia, but gradually this group was decimated by strikes. The Libyans did rise to prominence based on a couple of charismatic leaders and the influx of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group ranks. And there is undoubtedly a strong current of the most extreme forms of Salafism in some parts of Libya that had served as a breeding ground for such al-Qaida foot soldiers and leaders," Leiter said.

Ambassador Rice: Benghazi attack began spontaneously

The close ties between al-Qaida Central in Pakistan and the Libyans were cemented in 2007 when the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, a radical group formed to overthrow Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, broke apart, leading several leaders to join al-Qaida at the same time others were denouncing the violence of Osama bin Laden's operations.

A December 2007 report (.pdf) on foreign fighters in Iraq, produced by the Countering Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy pointed out the significance of the Libyan recruiting to the rise of al-Qaida in Iraq, the local branch of the broader terror group, during the height of the Iraqi civil war.

Libyan fighters stream into Iraq
Starting in November 2007, the center analyzed nearly 700 records of foreign nationals who entered Iraq from August 2006 to August 2007. The data came from personnel records seized from al-Qaida in Iraq, which had jihadists fill out questionnaires as they arrived in Iraq.

Anti-US protests erupt in Kabul as Western missions tighten security

Of 591 records that included the countries of origin of the fighters, Libya was the second most common after Saudi Arabia — 18.8 percent (112) of the fighters reported that they hailed from Libya. And of that number, a staggering 90 percent came from the Derna-Benghazi-Ajdabiyah corridor.

Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf said foreign elements were involved in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi — the first time Libya has officially acknowledged that it wasn't a spontaneous protest. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

The most common cities that the fighters called home were Derna, Libya, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with 52 and 51 fighters respectively. Derna, with a population just more than over 80,000 compared to Riyadh's 4.3 million, has far and away the most fighters per-capita in the records.

A Meet the Press panel discusses the role the United States plays in the Middle East.

In fact, one out of every 1,000 residents of the 300-mile corridor from Derna to Ajdabiya wound up in Iraq during that single year.

Darna's importance to the jihadist presence inside Libya was underscored earlier this year when a series of bombings was attributed to a battle for power among rival jihadist groups. There were also rumors that Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaida's leader following the death of bin Laden, had dispatched a commander to Derna.

Roger Cressey, former deputy director of the National Security Council's Counter Terrorism Division, said the attack on the U.S. Consulate is likely to raise awareness of how important this region has become to al-Qaida.

"Given the presence of al-Qaida-influenced extremists in the area, this corridor will become a priority for U.S. counterterrorism," said Cressey, now an NBC News analyst. "It will join Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia."

I'm really surprise that Ambassador Rice continue contradicting his statements with the Syrian President Magariaf . Obama and his Administration keep the blame of the killing of our Ambassador Stevens to the filmmaker on the Mohammad movie while that statement is denied by the Syrian President who said the attach agaist the American Embasy was prepared months ago in Protest for the death of AlQaeda leaders. Obama Obama we all are Osama . Romney was right about the wrong approach of Obama in this matter, his lack of experience and his ideology is a treat to our national security. We can't have a President that ignore the facts and mislead the public opinion with false statements. Obama is a falure and shold not be reelected.

Rick, could it be that there is more at play here that you do not know about? I am sure you are a very educated person, I mean who else would call the President of the United States a " clown" but a socialy astute and studied individual?

The hayride of inept Republicans that are all knowing in their criticism of this administration is so telling in their lockstep approach to bashing every move President Obama makes.

Having knowledge about the world of counterintelligence and the social implications of governing in the midst of civil rebellion is not something the everyday citizen would ever be aware of.

Comments such as yours are an unconscionable act of disloyalty to the Government of the United States and treacherous in this time of World chaos.

You don't spend billions of dollars destroying infrastructure and killing people liberating countries for democracy, and then turn it back over to the same savages that hate you and expect a happy ending. This should be common sense. But Obama seems to think he always know what is best for others.

The al-Qaida flag is now flying in Libya, and has been for awhile, but has been totally ignored. Just like the warnings of a security breach and attacks were ignored, resulting in the murders of our citizens.

America deserves better leadership.

As the facts come out, we know a call for protests was issued in Egypt on 9-11 by an extremist Muslim cleric on an Egyptian extremist TV network. This was not on Libyan TV, but with the internet, it is possible that this film may have played a role in Libya. Until enough of the protesters and attackers present at Benghazi consulate are interviewed and interrogated, we will not know what role this film played in the Benghazi protest and subsequent attack.

I find it appalling that Republican apologists for Romney cannot wait until the facts are in before beginning their attacks on Obama.

Anger in the Muslim world over insults of Mohammed has resulted in numerous riots and protests over the past 12 years. A Danish cartoonist's cartoons sparked similar reaction in Muslim world in 2005.

Patience people. Reacting without the facts is a dangerous game to play.

AS more time goes by WE are seeing that the CLOWNS in DC missed ---MISSED MANY WARNINGS---including those from the BRITS and a LIBYIAN. OBAMA,CLINTON,RICE (the one at the UN) and many others are are as RESPONSIBLE for the MURDERS of our people as are those who pulled the trigger---HAVING KNOWLEDGE of this prior and NOT acting as they should have. THEY KNEW this was coming---AND another thing---THEOBAMA deems himself ABOVE ATTENDING the DAILY INTEL MEETINGS saying that "JUST READING " about things is enough" ---THIS foolish behaviour is also what helped the TANGOS MURDER OUR PEOPLE--UNINFORMED AND ABOVE THE LAW seems to be THEOBAMA CALLING CARD!

HOWEVER if many remember ---YA ALL remember this---BARRY was raised as a MUSLIME in INDO and was told when he came here by his COMMIE MENTOR to say he is a CHRISTIAN---this is in the BOOK LIES about MY FATHER---aka DREAMS!

AND on top of that there are many other things coming out about WHO OBAMA REALLY IS !

HE is NOT BLACK as he would like YOU TO THINK---

My Name is African Swahili - NOT EXACTLY, your name is Arabic and 'Baraka' (from which Barack came) means 'blessed' in that language. Hussein is also Arabic and so is Obama.

Barack Hussein Obama is not half black. He is the first Arab-American President, not the first black President. Barack Hussein Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother's side and 43.75% Arabic and 6.25% African Negro from his father's side. While Barack Hussein Obama's father was from Kenya , his father's family was mainly Arabs.. Barack Hussein Obama's father was only 12.5% African Negro and 87.5% Arab (his father's birth certificate even states he's Arab, not African Negro). Go to:

Are you prepared for interruptions in the distribution chain .... and the ensuing social problems that will occur?

That's what you should be prepared for when this country supports or attacks Iran! ..

Perhaps if you had all the facts & intelligence that our President, Barack Obama, or any other president in office has, you might be more considerate in your opinions.

Read Time magazine's article on how this film trailer led to Egyptian protests. I gathered much of this same info previously from First Read, NPR, and the evening news on TV.

Libya is a different situation. This may well have been a pre-planned terrorist attack. But the events elsewhere in the Middle East are clearly the result of this hateful film trailer.

I remain appalled at the lack of inquisitiveness about what actually happened here and the condemnations based on non-facts that I am reading posted by people such as yourself.

After 9-11-01, Americans rallied around our President. I see no such patriotic response in these posts. You should at least get the story straight before jumping to conclusions.

@ 1.28

YOU may be right BUT there is EVIDENCE that the trailer which has been on Y-TUBE since JULY was NOT REALLY out there to the muslimes until---

The state run Egyptian TV governed by the Muslim brotherhood through Egypt's extremist hardliner President Mohammed Morsi originally promoted the YouTube video as a mechanism to incite riots, terror and destruction of American interests. Once the fire was ignited the Muslim brotherhood whose ranks include al-Qaeda, Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist organizations followed up by calling for nationwide protests "to denounce offences to religion and to the Prophet."

These plans were part of joint Muslim hardliner strategy firmed up and finalized during Morsi's recent visit to Tehran and aided by a perceived weakness in leadership within the United States. Islamic hardliners have concluded Obama projects a position of weakness as evidenced by his now infamous "apology tour" and that he is currently so focused reelection he is even unwilling to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak. To the Muslim world, Obama’s actions present a perceived platform of weakness enticing radicals to unleash their Pandora’s box of protests as a slap in the face to Obama and to American interests around the world.

Americans posting comments in response to these events seem totally unaware that the vast majority of Imams and clerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad [Holy war] against the infidels of the world and, that by killing an infidel, (which is a command to all Muslims) they are assured of a place in heaven. The definition of an infidel is a 'non-believer?' In the event some may fail to understand the significance of that Islamic command, all followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of their faith so they can have a place in heaven. In effect they have been commanded to kill everyone in this chat who is not a Muslim.

So now the right wing and the tea baggers blame Obama for the failure of US policy in the mideast. The US has had no policy in the mideast for decades other than support Israel. Bush's policy was to invade Iraq and Afghanistan and we can see how well that worked. Right now we are reaping the results of the right wing neo-cons policy in the mideast. According to Time magazine, Sheik Khaled Abdallah on the Islamist satellite TV network al-Nas showed portions of the film trailer from "Innocennce of Muslims" on Sept 8th, 2012.

Salafists, an Egyptian group of Islamists, had been having small protests at the US embassy in Cairo. After the showing of this film trailer on Sept 8th, they planned protests for Sept 11th. These Salafists are more radical than the Muslim Brotherhood and hold the 2nd highest number of seats in the Egyptian parliament. They are political opponents of the Muslim Brotherhood which holds the most seats in parliament and the Presidency.

Thus, there is an underlying political situation going on in Egypt's new democracy that may well affect events there.

Clearly, the showing of portions of this film trailer on al-Nas TV incited the protests in Egypt on Sept 11th. That al-Nas coverage and the ensuing Egyptian riot at the US Embassy in Cairo led to more coverage of this film trailer on all news networks in the world and the Muslim outrage spread as a result.

Al-Qaeda has already entrenched themselves in Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Egypt, and now Libya. (they were probably there already).

Al-Qaeda is going strong in success. Killing Osama Bin Laden was just the beginning of a new Reign of Terror. The US also has to deal with the Enemy from Within here---US born Terrorists practicing in the camps of Al-Qaeda, coming back to the US, to do damage.

The US must not rest with Terrorists of the worst kind. Al-Qaeda, second leader to Osama, is still in Command. He is a doctor, and very cunning. Al-Awaki's death meant nothing. The new Terrorists keep rising like the "Phoenix". They are like bees driven to the hive to make more "Honey"; or is it Terror?

Once again the inept, close "in"staff of socialist advisers to Obama-san have supported and guided him down the slippery slope of ignorance about the Middle East terrorist organizations and their intent. Poor Hilary is doing her best to keep up a brave face with the ignorance of facts going on behind her back.

How in the he** can anyone, with any understanding/knowledge of Middle East events, think that the sick-minded movie trailer was the sole source of the Libyan attack is beyond me!

Senator McCain said it best..."demonstrators don't usually bring RPG's and heavy automatic weapons to a demonstration". With that in mind...why would our government take the position that the "movie trailer" was the sole source of the Middle East demonstrations. The "trailer" undoubtedly contributed to the "demonstrations", and the 9/11 timing is not insignificant either.

HOWEVER, you don't bring a knife to a gunfight, and other than Iraq and Afghanistan...that is all the Obama administration has done under the disguise of "diplomacy".

This country has lost a TRUE Ambassador, he knew the language and understood the culture...as such, he was an enemy to the terrorists. Hence the "attack" within the "demonstration".

Proof.

When was the last time you read anything positive coming from the Mid East as a result of Obama's policies? And OBL doesn't count....anyone sitting in the big chair when that came down would have done the same thing. That was the US Military's win, Obama was just the one sitting by the phone when it happened.

When the men who killed our ambassador to Libya were in the final stages of their preparation, Hillary Clinton was in the Cook Islands, being regaled by locals in traditional dress. Her seemingly endless world tour has prioritized symbolism and pageantry over substance. So too has the administration of her boss, Barack Obama, and the costs are now becoming clear.

This explains why Obama’s chief diplomat said of the Libya attack: “I asked myself—how could this happen? How could this happen in a country we helped liberate, in a city we helped save from destruction?”

Madam secretary, it is time for you and your boss to wake up and smell the global jihad.

There are people in this world—and not a small number of them—who share the vision bin Laden had and have the will and means to act. No amount of apologizing for America, embracing our adversaries or mistreating our allies will change that.

It is worth recalling that Cairo, the city where a mob entered the US embassy compound and burned an American flag, was the epicenter of what critics call Obama’s “apology tour.” It was there that he apologized for critical steps American officials took in the Middle East to defend against the Soviets eight years before Obama was born. It was there that he criticized his own nation’s response to 9/11.

That was the reason US diplomats in Cairo instinctively put out an apologetic condemnation of those who “hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.” They were simply channeling the Obama view of the world.

Hillary also said that the attack was the result of a “small and savage group.”

Wrong again.

Viewed correctly, the attack was perpetrated by a very large group. Terrorism as we have known it since 9/11 is but the violent vanguard of the Islamist political ideology. This ideology unifies diverse terrorists from Jemmah Islamiyah in Indonesia to Al-Shabaab in Somalia to Boko Haram in Nigeria to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt to the Haqqani network in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

While the groups are diverse and at times antagonistic toward each other, their hatred of America unites them, and they work toward a generally common goal. Behind them is a large body of people who cheer on and support Islamists—a minority of Muslims, but hardly a body of people we should ignore.

I recall seeing this pdf last year and posting it regularly while we/NATO enforced that BS "no fly zone" so the east Libyan al qaida could take over the country. My guess is that there must have been some assumptions or guarantees that the "new" government would sell out their national wealth at a faster rate than 'ol Gadhafi. Sad.

What is more asinine is assuming anything different would have happened under Mitt Romney.

What do they mean "emerges"?

This article even cites the Defense Intelligence Institute study from 5 years ago about the Libyan origins of the foreign jihadists entering Iraq between 2004-2007. Apparently these were inconvenient facts...

    #1.46 - Thu Sep 20, 2012 8:46 PM EDT

Obama ignored congress completely when he attacked Libya. He claimed it was NATO wanting the 'no fly zone' and congress wasn't necessary in HIS decision making process. No one ever really noted who the 'revolutionaries' were, many were fresh from Iraq where they had industriously killed Americans. Obama and Hillary both stated that an 'evil dictator' had to go and Hillary cackled and joked about Quadaffi's death. That little display was beyond poor taste, for a head of State to carry on like that is so beneath the dignity of the office that it is breath taking. Then Obama constantly and incessantly bragging about killing bin Laden, over and over and over. No dignity, no class. You don't kill heads of state and then gloat like bullies, that may have been ok for deranged Roman emperors like Caligula, it is far from seemly for an American 'leader' to do so.

Obama's war was Libya, he engaged, didn't know or didn't care to have the facts and all his supporters brayed about how wonderful and 'strong' he was. So, now Al-Quaeda has grown much, much stronger and better armed (Obama sent those 'rebels' arms like he is doing in Syria, better equipping Al Quaeda than either Iran or Saudi Arabia) and let us not forget all those 'disappeared' weapons, tons and tons of them from Quadaffi's arsenal. Obama and Hillary are the best friends a terrorist can have.

We consume 24% of the world's oil. Presently, we get our oil from the US (11% of world's oil produced) and Canada and South America. Surprisingly, we get very little oil from the middle East. Europe does though. The world oil market determines the price of oil and the supply tends to go to countries that are closest to where the oil is produced. The middle East is not very close to us. We do get oil from Venezuela which is a member of OPEC.

The terrorists that attacked our Benghazi consulate represent but a small minority of Libyans. Moamar Khaddafi was a brutal, repressive dictator. We could have sat by and done nothing as his forces slaughtered innocent Libyans.

We chose instead to prevent this slaughter and we now have a pro-western government there. This is a new government with little experience at dealing with civil unrest. It is a weak government, but I believe it is far better for Libyans than a Khaddafi government whose history included the bombing of US airplane over Lockerbie some years ago.

NATO supported the rebel forces as well. Libya was ruled by a brutal dictator for over 34 years. That there was an uprising against his tyranny is something that all Americans should support. that a small portion of the rebels was anti-American is something the US and the pro-western government of Libya will have to deal with and we will.

The anti-Obama forces among us choose to ignore the facts while expressing their outrage. Terrorism is intended to divide us and make us angry. I see here that this terrorist strategy appears to be working.

@ HARLEY CHIC---THESE are some questions that were asked of THEOBAMA and then researched by another BLACK AMERICAN AUTHOR.

Go to:
    http://www.arcadeathome.com/newsboy.phtml?Barack_Hussein_Obama_...an%2c_only_6.25%25_African">http://www.arcadeathome.com/newsboy.phtml?Barack_Hussein_Obama_-_Arab-Americ<http://www.arcadeathome.com/newsboy.phtml?Barack_Hussein_Obama_...an%2c_only_6.25%25_African

7.) I Never Practiced Islam - NOT EXACTLY, you practiced it daily at school, where you were registered as a Muslim and kept that faith for 31 years, until your wife made you change, so you could run for office.

4-3-08 Article 'Obama was 'quite religious in Islam''

8.) My School In Indonesia Was Christian - NOT EXACTLY, you were registered as Muslim there and got in trouble in Koranic Studies for making faces (check your own book).

February 28, 2008. Kristoff from the New York Times: Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated
(it'll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as 'one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.' This is just one example of what Pamela is talking about when she says 'Obama's narrative is
being altered, enhanced and manipulated to whitewash troubling facts.'

So when Bush decided to invade Afghanistan with 80% citizen support and said we will leave this country in better shape than we found it, you want us to just wash our hands of it. I believe that when a US President promises something when invading a country that our country needs to honor those promises.

What does an American promise mean if we just walk away from it when it becomes expensive or inconvenient. I, for one, want the USA to keep its word because trust is important in the world and our role as a peacemaker and promoter of democracy in the world is derived from our TRUSTWORTHINESS.

Close borders, have a stronger military presence (with ammo) give warning shots when attempts to enter our embassy occur and shoot if the warning shots do not work. Tell the terrorist leaders to control their people and give them a definate time when this should happen. Ultimatim of our demands being met or threaten with stopping all foreign aid immediately. If they threaten to retaliate, then we warn them of the possibility that we will have no alternative but to defend the US and then follow thru if absolutely necessary. My guess is that if they see strength on the side of the Americans and are also faced with the possibility of losing their bread and butter, or rather goat and fava beans, they will desist.

Wow. You are really striking a low blow. Perhaps you should get off the pot and study some books on the history of the middle East and US foreign policy. Obama is pursuing a wise course here. It is very much how previous US Presidents have dealt with Mid East riots.

Go to:

February 28, 2008. Kristoff from the New York Times: Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated
(it'll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as 'one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.' This is just one example of what Pamela is talking about when she says 'Obama's narrative is
being altered, enhanced and manipulated to whitewash troubling facts.'

I don't understand how we Americans can be such a bunch of sheep. The 911 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia, this story says the majority of terrorists come from Saudi yet we went to war with Iraq and Afghanistan. Why aren't drones bombing Saudi Arabia? They say they are our friends, yet breed the most people out to kill us and we let them. I guess oil is more important than our security and our children. How soon will we wake up? If ever. Why is no one asking this question? If we don't cut off the head of the snake it will keep biting us. The sad fact is the snake is in bed with us and our politicians.

Terrorists do not respect borders. Afghanistan was home to the main al Quaeda training base and Bin Laden. That is why we attacked Afghanistan.

Iraq's Saddam Hussein tried to have Pres. Bush's dad assassinated in Kuwait. I believe that is main reason Bush-Cheney went into Iraq, although they cited WMD (none found). Al Quaeda link (tenuous at best), and building democracy.

There was never a time in US history where we did that. Benjamin Franklin gave money to help build the first mosque in America. This country was founded by a lot of people whose forefathers fled religious persecution in Europe. You need to study American history.

it is funny how the republicans criticize the president when he doesn't do what they want about the middle east, first they want him to support the rebels to overthrow the dictators, then they want him to go to war against the same people they want him to help, am i the only one that reads the news, or pays attention to what's going on? some of you just have your heads so way up in your rear ends and are blinded by hate and racial discrimination. how many of you are serving or have served in the armed forces? for romney and company it is so easy to say lets go to war, but i know that all their rich kids wont even enlist to go fight any war, so why don't they stop bitching and whinning and stop blocking the president when he wants to do the right thing. as far as i know the president can't even act on his own when it comes to go to war, it has to be aproved by congress and the house, so all you haters open your eyes and stop listening to fox and the republicans before you do something realy stupid.

Nope. You can pin this one 100% on Oblahblah.

It was his choice to overthrow Khadafi and Mubarak, and his choice alone.

The House and Senate had nothing to do with it.

I guess you forgot his did this all under Executive Order, even after the time expired for him to do so.

Do not speak for me, I never wanted dictators to be overthrown to support any rebels. The President is supposed to be able to negotiate and compromise with congress, if he can't do that, then perhaps he needs to step down. Several leaders in America's history have been faced with crisis and had to go against a congress that did not give them the majority, but were able to accomplish at least in part some of their agenda, and did so without putting blame on any who came before them.

Many Muslims are well educated and understand Western ways, but unfortunately many remain uneducated and susceptible to the extremist lie machines in the Middle East.

Truth and facts are the solution here. Ignorance breeds intolerance. Education breeds understanding.
