National security officials told NBC News that the continuing cyber attacks this week that slowed the websites of JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America are being carried out by the government of Iran. One of those sources said the claim by hackers that the attacks were prompted by the online video mocking the Prophet Muhammad is just a cover story.
A group of purported hackers in the Middle East has claimed credit for problems at the websites of both banks, citing the online video mocking the founder of Islam. One security source called that statement "a cover" for the Iranian government's operations.
The attack is described by one source, a former U.S. official familiar with the attacks, as being "significant and ongoing" and looking to cause "functional and significant damage." Also, one source suggested the attacks were in response to U.S. sanctions on Iranian banks.
The consumer banking website of Bank of America was unavailable to some customers on Tuesday, and JPMorgan Chase on Wednesday had the same problems, which multiple sources linked to a denial-of-service attack, in which a website is bogged down by a large number of requests. A Chase spokesman said Wednesday that the consumer site was intermittently unavailable to some customers, but did not acknowledge then that there was an attack. On Thursday, Chase said slowness continued but was resolved by late afternoon Eastern Time. Bank of America acknowledged on Tuesday that its site had experienced slowness, but would not say what caused it.
Senior U.S. officials acknowledge that Iranian attacks have been the subject of intense interest by U.S. intelligence for several weeks. Last week, the Joint Chiefs of Staff's Intelligence Directorate, known as J-2, confirmed continuing Iranian cyber attacks against U.S. financial institutions in a report described as "highly classified." The report was posted on internal classified U.S. government sites last Friday, September 14.
Because of the level of classification, the officials refused to provide or confirm any specifics on these attacks. However, one official noted that Iran's uranium enrichment program had been the target of the STUXNET worm in 2010. The worm was reportedly developed by the U.S. and Israel. "The Iranians are very familiar with the environment,” quipped the official.
A conservative website, FreeBeacon.com, initially reported on the Pentagon analysis, quoting it as saying, “Iran’s cyber aggression should be viewed as a component, alongside efforts like support for terrorism, to the larger covert war Tehran is waging against the west.” U.S officials did not deny the FreeBeacon report when queried by NBC News.
A financial services industry group, the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center, warned U.S. banks, brokerages and insurers late Wednesday to be on heightened alert for cyber attacks. FS-ISAC also raised its raised the cyber threat level to "high" from "elevated" in an advisory to members, citing "recent credible intelligence regarding the potential" for cyber attacks as its reason for the move.
The former head of cyber-security for the White House testified Thursday that “we were waiting for something like this from Iran.” Frank Cilluffo, who served as Special Assistant to the President for Homeland Security under President George W. Bush, is currently an associate vice president at George Washington University and heads the Homeland Security Policy Institute. Cilluffo testified in a previously scheduled appearance before the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Homeland Security, saying “the government of Iran and its terrorist proxies are serious concerns in the cyber context. What Iran may lack in capability, it makes up for in intent. They do not need highly sophisticated capabilities—just intent and cash—as there exists an arms bazaar of cyber weapons, allowing Iran to buy or rent the tools they need or seek.”
The statement by the purported Muslim hackers, posted on Tuesday on Pastebin, an online bulletin board, reads in full: "In the name of Allah the companionate the merciful. My soul is devoted to you Dear Prophet of Allah. Dear Muslim youths, Muslims Nations and are noblemen. When Arab nations rose against their corrupt regimes (those who support Zionist regime) at the other hand when, Crucify infidels are terrified and they are no more supporting human rights. United States of America with the help of Zionist Regime made a Sacrilegious movie insulting all the religions not only Islam. All the Muslims worldwide must unify and Stand against the action, Muslims must do whatever is necessary to stop spreading this movie. We will attack them for this insult with all we have. All the Muslim youths who are active in the Cyber world will attack to American and Zionist Web bases as much as needed such that they say that they are sorry about that insult. We, Cyber fighters of Izz ad-din Al qassam will attack the Bank of America and New York Stock Exchange for the first step. These Targets are properties of American-Zionist Capitalists. This attack will be started today at 2 pm. GMT. This attack will continue till the Erasing of that nasty movie. Beware this attack can vary in type. Down with modern infidels. Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest."
There was no report of an attack on the New York Stock Exchange.
Also on Thursday, the U.S. disclosed that it has bought $70,000 worth of air time on seven Pakistani television channels to air an ad which shows President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denouncing the anti-Islamic video. In the ad, President Obama says, "Since our founding the United States has been a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate religious beliefs of others." Clinton appears after Obama and says, "Let me state very clearly that the United States has absolutely nothing to do with this video. We absolutely reject its contents. America's commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation."
Pakistan was added Wednesday to the State Department's list of countries to which Americans should avoid travel, joining Lebanon and Tunisia, following protests across the Middle East and North Africa and the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in which American Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed.

You can be surveilled by any number of Federal agencies, have your phone and computer tapped, bank, medical, and private records accessed! You can be arrested without gaining access to an attorney or a trial. We are molested at the airports or radiated for “security”. And just recently added National Defense Resources Preparedness (NDRP) which comes on the heels of NDAA. This Executive Order allows the government to take pretty much whatever it wants including crops, farm equipment, vehicles, boats, aircraft and fuel to “prepare” for the national defense. This includes making people work for free. You think I’m kidding about the free labor? Here’s a line straight from the EO that says, “. . . to employ persons of outstanding experience and ability without compensation. . .” This is authorized even in peace time!

If your intention, in your pro-Iranian propaganda, is to persuade American readers that Iran is not at fault, you need to be more covert. Iran must first stop making violent threats against America and carrying them, if you want your propaganda to have a sympathetic audience. Everyone in America and the international community has the intelligence to understand Iran's intention based solely on Iran's own speech broadcast from its own leader's mouths. They have not made their intentions a secret. They have been covert in their terrorist actions. Everybody knows that.
If you want to build trust that can be verified, tell the truth.
If you want Iran to be seen as innocent, then write about all of the humanitarian efforts Iran puts worth in the world to help out other countries that are not Islamic. Write about Iran's political agenda and actions that express goodwill toward America and Israel. Give verifiable evidence of Iran's innocent goodwill and you will be trusted.

Despite the widely publicized claims by the US, Israel and some of their European allies that Iran’s nuclear program may include a military aspect, Iran insists on its civilian nature, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful objectives.
The IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence indicating that Tehran’s civilian nuclear program has been diverted towards nuclear weapons production.
This is while the Israeli regime is widely known to possess between 200 and 400 nuclear warheads which they deny. Furthermore, Tel Aviv refuses to allow its nuclear facilities to come under international regulatory inspections and rejects any international nuclear regulatory agreements.
What’s good for the goose is good for the gander! If I was another country who was under Israel’s scrutiny for nuclear weapon investigation, I would ask that the same review processes be applied and agreed to by both countries before I would capitulate to inspections.

Iranians are a peculiar people. The ones in the U.S. that I know, tend to call themselves, "Persians," as though they are distancing themselves from their Iranian culture. Some of them are very Western in habit and some of them are very not. It may be in our interest to keep this in mind. We should probably use some (military and diplomatic) surgery to take out the nasty pieces of garbages without harming the ones who actually love us. Food for thought.
When the economy slows down and the folks start hurting, the 'create-a-crisis and manage it' banks and governments are first to declare war. Obama was saber-rattling at Iran just a few months ago. The Chinese are saber-rattling at the Japanese, essentially because they don't want lots of riots about the crappy economy.
As to cyber war, like some (many) other 'wars,' there are often events that are created to justify attacking another group. Tonkin bay, sinking of the Maine, just off the top of my head. There are many others, the only groups that ever benefit from war are the international banking cartels. Look at WWII for some precise examples.

The great tragedy is the investment of our children to fight for corporate supremacy. Remind me, what was Viet Nam about? My father was career military, enlisted. He was willing to give his life for his country but he told my brother that fighting to push corporate or banking agendas wasn't defending our country. Creating an enemy to bolster economies or fatten defense contractor pockets seems a mite....wrong. Look at France and Libya. Perfect opportunity to sell some of those jet fighters, the demonstrations were just awesome.

The Fed is a double edged sword. On one hand they carry basic immunity from prosecution and regulation by the US government, as they write their own accounting rules, they write their own oversight rules, and they choose what details they want to present to Congress and when they want to present them. Besides the frequent testimony that the Fed Chief offers to law makers and a simple yearly report, they basically operate autonomously with more power to control domestic and global financial markets than any other institution in the world.
However that being said, they also do work that is extremely complex analyzing and supporting a global banking industry that changes daily. They must account for global macroeconomic trends, geopolitical conflicts, the effect of complex trading tools, and even the differences in the laws of individual nations as they pertain to the global financial markets and institutions. I can say that they often make decisions that are not well understood by the general population, but if it had been up to politicians to plan, execute, and deliver immediate complex financial programs like TARP, we would still be fighting over who's plan is more right.
I've always believed that the global monetary system, in which the Fed plays a major part, is essentially a giant ponzi scheme that we must continually add countries to, in order to convince the current investors it is still working successfully. I think that capitalism, as we operate it today, is the ultimate bubble. What most people don't realize is that that bubble almost burst during the height of the 2008 financial melt-down, and we were almost forced to reveal the man behind the curtain, as the bets we made were so large that they nearly imploded the entire global financial system. In many ways, this is ultimately why the deficit doesn't matter, as its the tally by which we count the imaginary means(paper money) through which we accumulate very real ends(food, water, and other resources). The amount of money doesn't matter as much as the ability to continue distributing global resources as efficiently as possible. Population growth will eventually pop the bubble by outgrowing the capacity for money to accommodate survival.

Many of our soldiers don't fight for America, they fight for their lives and their buddies beside them, because we put them in a war zone. They're not defending our freedoms, they're laying the foundation for permanent military bases to defend the freedoms of Exxon Mobil and British Petroleum and the corporate cartels.

The battle cry to go to war to defend the nation is one thing, the battle cry to bolster wealth is not defending this country. I am a fiscal conservative, I am not an idiot. I witnessed the returning troops from Viet Nam, I witnessed a girl spit at a soldier and I turned around and slapped her. She was shocked and I told her if she wanted a fight to bring it on. I defended that soldier for what he did, I defended him against a brainwashed idiot and remember something, there was a draft going on then, those young men were sent there, most didn't volunteer. The 'rules of engagement' then were as stupid as they are now. We aren't MEANT to win, if winning were the real goal, we'd have done so by now. The 'WAR ON TERROR' continues and guess how many jobs are created, how many civil liberties lost and who benefits?
I protested Viet Nam when it became clear that it was never meant to be won, it was playing politics with American lives and the same sh#t is happening in the Middle East. We aren't allowed to win, we are used as pawns and frankly, it is tiresome to see flag draped coffins like the ones coming home, soldiers killed because of idiotic and wrongheaded policies like 'nation building' and 'training the new army' especially when the new army consisting of people who want us dead. Have soldiers 'nation build' is like having exterminators build ant colonies. I am not surprised that Iran is using cyberterrorism as the US and Israel had done to them. Yes it is an act pf war and we are fighting a cyberwar with the Iranians. Do you not think that the combined resources of the US, Europe, and Israel cannot crush their economy even further back into the stone age? The trick is to at least leave them enough pride that sometime in the future they will want to join the rest of the world. A steady hand at the tiller is the best solution in the short term. When someone does not like what is on the world wide web or on a theater, simple, change the website or do not go to the theater to see what you don't want to see. The USA Colors do not run, we have freedom of speech on this land. In a perfect world all religions would get along just fine. Since humans are not perfect, we need to compromise and when someone does not like what someone published, well, find something else to entertain yourself with. Muslims should not expect everyone to convert to a Muslim, and if that is the case, war should start now. You probably don't remember the attack and occupation of the US embassy during the Carter Administration. You probably also choose to ignore the not only does Iran support terrorist groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and any other anti-western Shiite groups, but they regularly preach destruction of the infidel West, Israel, and Sunni led Arabic Countries. They are currently involved in the protest movement against US assets, the Syrian conflict, all to spread their Islam in a modern day Persian Empire. Our government knows god damn well these attacks weren't because of that film. Those attacks were a retaliatory strike for our foreign policy over the past decade, coinciding with the anniversary of 9/11. As far as an attack goes, this wasn't much of an attack. "they" slowed down the sites to 2 banks, for a few hours to a day. But that is enough for this story of how Iran is behind this to be leaked.
