Federal prosecutors and FBI agents in Washington have launched a new criminal investigation of Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. involving alleged financial improprieties, including possible misuse of funds monitored by Congress, law enforcement sources tell NBC News.
The probe prompted lawyers for Jackson — who has been on a leave of absence from Congress since June for medical treatment — to meet with federal prosecutors this week in an attempt to persuade them not to bring charges against the congressman, sources said.
The sources said it was unclear whether Jackson, who has not been seen in his office for months, would be charged before the November election — a subject that was discussed between Jackson’s lawyers and the prosecutors this week. Jackson’s lawyers urged the prosecutors not to file charges before the election — but prosecutors refused to make any commitments, the sources familiar with the meeting said.
Either way, the new investigation could ratchet up pressure for Jackson to step aside. Despite his illness — which his office has said involves his treatment for bipolar disorder — Jackson is running for re-election, seeking a 10th term. His lawyers did not return email and phone call request for comment.
Frank Watkins, Jackson’s congressional spokesman, says he has not reached out Jackson and has not spoken to him about the investigation, and that the first he heard of the investigation was when he was contacted by the Chicago Sun Times, which first reported the story. He said he believes Jackson is still in DC.

The sources, confirming the account in the Sun-Times, said the new probe is being run out of the U.S. attorney's office in Washington DC. They said it is unrelated to previous allegations that Jackson was part of a scheme to persuade ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to name him to the Illinois Senate seat of Barack Obama in exchange for $1 million in campaign contributions from a top fundraiser.
The sources did not specify the financial irregularities being investigated. But the Sun-Times said the case involves misuse of funds or an account monitored by Congress. It comes weeks after a report that Jackson and his wife, Chicago alderwoman Sandi Jackson, put their Washington DC home on the market for $2.5 million. A campaign spokesman said at first the home was put on the market to pay for medical bills, but the Jackson later took it off the market.
Jackson, the son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson Sr., stopped working June 10, his staffers revealed two weeks later. He first obtained treatment at a facility in Arizona before transferring to the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where doctors said he had "depression and gastrointestinal issues."
He left the Mayo Clinic and went back to Washington, D.C. in early September but has not returned to work.

Congress needs to take action to have Jackson removed from his seat and barred from running for reelection until he is once again mentally fit to hold office. His absence has left the people of his district without representation in Congress. In any other job they would have already brought someone else in to replace him since he is well past the 12 weeks leave under the FMLA. By insisting on holding onto his seat has is demonstrating that he is just like his father, neither one of the cares about anyone but themselves. Jackson does not care that he is depriving his constituents of their Constitutionally guaranteed representation, all he cares about is hanging onto his seat and the money and power that come with it. I certainly hope that the people of his district are not dumb enough to reelect him when he has been absent for so long. He would have had a much better chance of making a political comeback if he had done the honorable thing and stepped aside while he dealt with his personal issues. I do not buy that he has any real medical problem, I think that the medical problems have just been a way for him to hide from federal investigators. If he stepped aside then once he had all his personal issues behind him he could try and run again. People would have at least given him credit for doing the right thing for his constituents. His current behavior shows that he is just a selfish, self centered POS who only cares about himself.

What is amazing is the amount of messages being posted on an article that stated nothing, that gave very little to no information about anything except that Jackson jr was supposedly under federal investigation.
Why would the feds be investigating him about an account that is monitored by Congress? Don't Congress have their own investigators to do this sort of thing?
The article was confusing at best, not sure what he is being investigated for or why, as the Feds if they are indeed investigating are not talking so far. How would anyone know what Jackson's lawyers were doing re the Feds in the first place.
Enough with the inuendos being presented as facts or passing off as supposed leaks and talking off the record without giving ones name, that no one can say what the charges are, or supposed charges will be or what the Feds are supposedly investigating.
Why not wait until the story, info, charges etc can be verified, firmed up before jumping to conclusions based on whisperings etc?

The same party that was against abolishing slavery--not only in the South but also in the North (see Copperheads). They only relented in the 1960s because they saw that most people's attitudes had changed so they had to help pass the Civil Rights Act or lose voters. WOW*, a cohesive, fair and logical argument, I can respect that. And I do agree with most of what you argue. (denotes surprise and shock, as I usually get unfounded, illogical or malicious responses)
1) Weapons of Mass Destruction/ Iraq... Sadam had at one point Gas Weapons and he used them. (there is some argument as to whether or not he intentionally used them on the Kurds, or if they were just collateral damage) But the Fact remains, he had them, and he used them. Just because there were none found at the time of the invasion 1), does not mean he didn't destroy his inventory to avoid being caught with them, 2), he could not have created more at some point in the future.
As a side note: At the time of the invasion, I believed the hype on TV that the Iraqi People were longing for freedom and if we deposed Sadam, they would be capable of sustaining a Democratic Government. I thought it would be much like Germany or Japan post WWII. I was wrong. Hind sight being 20/200, I see now that these are a primitive people, incapable of self government. (maybe I am wrong, but I doubt it) I am willing to wager that in a short period of time, another dictator will take over. (I hope I am wrong, but I doubt it) So, again in hind sight, (as I am in favor of deposing all dictators) maybe invading Iraq wasn't such a good idea.
2) As far as I (and most of the people around me at the time) felt the taking of Hostages was an act of war and should have been treated as such. We were aware, however, of the danger of the Soviet Union getting involved, and the weakness of our military (thanks to Vietnam and anti-military sentiment of the day) But we felt and still do, that the lack of overt action would lead to and has led to other such heinous acts. (You got to nip it in the bud) nip it, nip it in the bud.
3) Agreed, however, Clinton only went after bin Laden surreptitiously. Had he taken action, and sent in US forces, (as he should and could have, who would have opposed us) the problem would have been solved. (One should look at the after math of the attacks on Gaddafi in 1986, you didn't hear much from him after that.)
4) I would argue though that is was indeed Reagan's "Star Wars" program (which is still a burr under the Russians saddle) and his strong "Peace through strength" Policies that ended the Soviet Union, they just couldn't keep up, financially or technologically. (The Star Wars program also spurred on the Tech revolution of the 90's that Clinton capitalized on) But, it was mostly Reagan's personality, when he fired the FAA Traffic Controllers, the Soviets realized this man meant business and they came to the table. But I would agree that the Soviet Union was on it's last leg anyway (and this may have been an excuse to change the regime) as Socialism or Communism can never work as a permanent form of government. (the Military Channel did a rather comprehensive documentary on Reagan, interviewing former KGB and Soviet officials and they admitted at first they thought he was all rhetoric, like his predecessors, until the Traffic Controllers strike.)
I also notice that you place criminals(although JJ jr. is only under investigation) in a category with politicians that you simple disagree with. Just exactly what laws did Perry, Bachman or Palin break? Perhaps, you should have chosen Biden, Franks or Dodd instead. or Boxer or Feinstein, or Pelosi? My point was that had not prior presidents pursued the policies they did, Reagan would not have been in a position to place pressure on the Soviet Union. Absent the Marshall Plan and NATO, there is a good chance that in 1981 the Iron Curtain would have run along the Rhine, or even the Atlantic Ocean.
By comparison, Reagan's actions hardly seem so dramatic. I also think you overestimate the positive impact to the tech. industry of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). The high tech revolution of the 90s was an event which advanced on multiple fronts. Some, such as Global Positioning Sensors, were certainly dependent on declassified military secrets. Others, such the rapid advance of the internet and personal computers, owed most of their advances to other sources.
Again, to repeat myself, the options available to Clinton in 1998 were quite different than those available to Bush by Sept. 12, 2001, or as the French say "Autres temps, autres moeurs.". If Clinton had advocated sending U.S. ground forces into Afghanistan, neither the public, nor congress would have stood for it.
By October of 2001, most of the U.S. was ready to drop an H bomb on Kabul.
I would also point out that Osama bin Laden was not a stationary landmark. Had we invaded Afghanistan he was at liberty (and had the resources) to go elsewhere, to Yemen, to the Sudan, to Somalia or elsewhere.

Yes, it was, and we could have treated it as such. However, it would not have been in our interests to do so, even if the USSR had remained on the sidelines. Iran was not then, and is not now, a dire threat to our well-being. Reagan must have thought so too, since instead of issuing ultimatums, he chose to surreptitiously sell them military equipment.
It is not unforgivable to be taken in by government and media misinformation. They're the experts. They are supposed know more than you (or I). But it is quite unforgivable to knowingly misrepresent the true situation, as I believe the Bush White House did with regard to Iraq. Yes, Saddam did, at one time, have a nerve gas capability. But that time was not in 2003, and I believe the Bush administration knew it.
As to his having destroyed these weapons in the months preceding our invasion, when U.N. Inspectors were traveling everywhere in Iraq, and when his country was under intense aerial surveillance by the U.S.: Sorry, I don't buy it.
Even if the nerve gas, biological weapons and other illicit weapons stores could have been disposed of in secret, these items are not found under buttercups in the garden. They demand a technological and manufacturing infrastructure, and all of that could not be made to simply disappear overnight.
Could he have reconstituted his weapons program in the future? Yes, if we left him alone to do so. But in an entire decade since the first Gulf War, we had not, and he had not.
Was keeping him under watch a big pain in the a$$? Absolutely.
Would doing so be better than spending a trillion dollars, thousands of U.S. lives and frittering away the best opportunity for success in Afghanistan? Even more emphatically, yes.

This shouldn't need explaining, but taking Noriega in Panama and finding and capturing Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan are two very different undertakings. The first was accomplished in just about 2 weeks, with all the fighting completed within 5 days. By contrast, 8 years after we invaded Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden was still at large.
Why you think that a) invading Afghanistan would have been a good idea in 1998, or b) the American public and congress would have supported it, I've no idea. But I remember the political realities of that time, and such an action was not possible.

The financial collapse of 2008 did not just happen, and certainly did not occur just because Barney Frank and Chris Dodd became committee chairmen in 2007. By 2007, the housing bubble was a done deal. Prices had peaked and were dropping. Banks and investment houses were already sitting on huge piles of overvalued, mortgage-backed securities. The stage was set for the disaster to come.
Yet somehow you see only that Barney Frank and Chris Dodd attained control of key committees in 2007.
I've given you [twice now] my reasons why anybody should doubt Bush on this count. In return, you cite faith. I would say one should reserve faith for God. The actions of humans must be judged by the apparent facts, not faith. In 2003 there was no valid reason to launch a massive invasion of Iraq, and if Bush did not know that, it was because he did not want to know.
It was dishonest, politically stupid and useless, as the truth was bound to come out. But since Obama was not using this misrepresentation to lead the nation into a war, I view it with far less outrage than I do Bush's actions in 2002, when he, Cheney, Wolfowitz, and Powell were beating the drums for the Iraqi Invasion, with a pack of lies which would embarrass a school boy.

Azureblue I lived in New Orleans in the 70's and early '80's and had a fair amount of connection with what was going on in political arena at the time. You are right in the sense that I do not know what is happening in Louisiana at this time but I doubt that there has been any massive sea change. Politics in Orleans, and to a lesser extent Jefferson, parish runs very liberal. The rest of the State seems to change back and forth although it does tend to be more conservative at most times. The way sex scandals are looked at in New Orleans and the surrounding communities is very different than the way they would be looked like in Cajun communities or the more northern parts of the State. Not too long ago a congressman from Jefferson Parish was caught up in a sex scandal and easily won reelection. He would have had a much more difficult time in other parts of the country.

And they don't start collecting it until age 59 or until they have 25 years of service. The maximum any federal employee, which includes members of congress, can collect is 80%. Except, of course, for one exception. Certain military members are permitted to stay on active duty for 40 years. (It's true, doubters! Look it up!) Those staying 40 years then collect 100% of their active duty retirement. as their retirement is based on 2.5% per year in the aggregate.
