Feds investigate phony letters warning Florida voters they're not eligible to vote

Florida voters receive letters saying their citizenship is being challenged, along with their eligibility to vote. WBBH's Dave Elias reports.

The FBI and U.S. Postal Service inspectors are investigating bogus official-looking letters sent to voters in at least 28 Florida counties questioning their citizenship and their eligibility to vote,  NBC News has learned.

David Couvertier, a spokesman for the FBI in Tampa, said his office opened up an investigation into the possible attempt at voter intimidation on Wednesday after receiving reports that eligible voters throughout the state have received the letters.

"We're taking it as a serious situation," he said. "We're looking at everything from civil rights violations to election fraud -- to everything in between."

Chris Cate, a spokesman for the Florida Secretary of State's Office, told NBC News, "We believe these  letters appear to meet the standard of voter intimidation." Between 50 and 100 such letters have been reported to state officials so far, "and those are only the ones we know about. We're encouraging people to come forward."

The fake letters, which first started showing up last Friday, have been sent under the names of real Florida county election supervisors -- with some correct contact information -- informing the voters that the supervisors have received "information" about their citizenship status, "bringing into doubt your eligibility as a registered voter."

The letters also say the voter must fill out a Voter Eligibility Form in the next 15 days -- and failure to do so will result "in the removal of your name from the voter registration rolls and you will no longer be eligible to vote."

"A non-registered voter who casts a vote in the state of Florida may be subject to arrest, imprisonment, and/or other criminal sanctions," the letters state.

Robert Wallis / Panos Pictures

In the key battleground state of Florida, divergent opinions separate voters with just over two weeks until the election.

Some of the letters have been received by "longtime, staunch voters who have been exercising their right to vote" for years, Couvertier said. While those people are likely to vote anyway, "Our concern is someone who might not be secure and then questions whether they should vote."

It's not clear who sent the letters, which were machine postmarked in Seattle. Couvertier said the FBI in Tampa is working with its Seattle office to track down the perpetrator.

Cate said a "significant majority have gone to Republican voters, but not exclusively. We've got Democrats who received the letters, we've got independents. We're telling everybody to be on the lookout."

    the vast right-wing conspiracy continues....

When the Republican party was born, it's goal was abolition. Sadly, now GOP stands for bad prejudices, ... including a war on women and minorities, including efforts to disenfranchise them.

This should not be ignored and no one is talking about this.

The same firm that was in question during Bush's elections.

I warned that the Sheldon Adelson and Koch brothers would open up the financial floodgates in the last two weeks. They have already been busted twice in the last month with voter registration fraud. Now, they are trying to scare away legally registered voters.

Next, they will do like in 2000 and 2004 and try actual voter intimidation at the polls. Watch. They have money, but no brains. They are going to take this election if they can no matter what. Last line of defense is Tagg Romney, who bought the company that owns the voting machines in Ohio. They are playing for keeps, and so should we.

    Hey,

    Arthur66

Democrats are trying to commit VOTER FRAUD. Again!

Republicans are RIGHT to pursue voter fraud!!

you are making no sense. A few years ago ACORN did not commit fraud. It's the GOP that has really been a fraud in voting. It's in the news in late september about a GOP consulting firm - Strategic Allied Consulting.

    .

Google 'Strategic Allied Consulting.' and you will find out more about this vast right wing conspiracy - last time in 2000 such conspiracy was backed up by the Supreme Court. When felons are encouraged, they are more likely to commit more crimes.

Watch out for bogus letters advising of polling location changes.

What do you call a political party that is always plotting ways to suppress a citizen’s right to vote? THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!

I know for a fact that this type of voter intimidation and misinformation is something that is encouraged by the GOP and has been a part of their core strategy for over 100 years. I know this because I was once an insider with the Republican Party. Then one day I woke up and realized how evil and self serving the party really was.

The Republican Party must be purged from our political system. There is no place in America for an organization that constantly and systematically plots new ways to suppress a citizen’s right to vote.

The good news is that since most of the letters appear to have gone out to repubs, it won't have any affect on the elections. The repubs are intelligent enough to figure out that it is bogus. Now, to the extent that they've gone out to dems, that is a different story. If you recall, in the Bush/Gore election of 2000, the repubs had no problem figuring out the Broward County ballot, but the dems claimed that it was confusing. Of course, as part of that "fiasco," the dem. controlled commissioners counted, recounted and recounted again the ballots and weren't able to find enough "hanging chads!" So, when the SC said that's enough counting, the dems screamed that the election was stolen from them. Go figure! I suppose they thought the rule was Gore was the only one who should have been entitled to count the ballots.

At any rate, like the Nigerian letter/email scandal that says provide us with your bank account information so we can send you money, if you are stupid enough to fall for this then you are too stupid to vote. Heck, just look at all the dimwits here posting criticizing the repubs about this. The apparently don't understand that it is obviously a dem activity since most of the letters went to repubs.

Shelia......I guess you can't accept the truth. Is it nice weather in that fantasy land you are living in? The letter went out to more republicans, meaning it would help the democrats. It is also a fact that groups like Acorn get into far more trouble than the small little episodes that happened over the past few months with the republican party. Of course, you will probably continue to ignore the facts and the truth and remain a blind follower to a party that doesn't care about you.

Not enough time in advance to fix it, but enough time in advanced to stop people from voting. Why do you ignore the facts? Shift the blame? I guess we should say that somehow the republicans got to the son of the democrat congressman and made him show people how to cast illegal votes to deflect attention. Face the facts, the democrat party has corrupt element.

Vote early. That is the answer. Polling places are very confusing; the Ohio Secretary of State Husted told people that the polling places would be consolidated and moved, which will cause long lines and confusion on election day. In Ohio, go to the Board of Elections to vote early. Look at the BoE website and call if you need more information.

Although both Republicans and Democrats in Florida received those intimidation letters, it may have had something to do with their last names; might they be Latino? More Republicans reported the letters, but Democrats received them too.

This case illustrates what is wrong with the Citizen's United decision. Most likely next week we will see immense untraceable mass mailings similar to these. Allowing corporations and even foreign individuals to attempt to subvert the American voting process by throwing billions of Dollars into mass media is clearly the wrong idea. If anything the campaign process should be streamlined in order to cut the costs of campaigning in order to make it possible for more competition to run for office. This Presidential election season is already the most-expensive in US history by 4-5 times what the 2008 campaigns cost.

Are you as sick and tired of being relentlessly bombarded by ad after ad after ad, especially when 95% of the electorate has long ago made-up their minds? And now the dirty tricks start, this time armed with funding coffers of record size, h*ellbent on destroying what had been a long history of free and fair elections in America for personal gain involving a small minority of the electorate. If you want to lose just about all labor rights, civil rights, women's rights. environmental protection law, most of your retirement security, and take America back a century to the worst abuses of the robber baron era, go ahead and vote for Romney.

On the other hand, if you are one of the bottom 90% of Americans who earn less than $80K/year, your chances for economic fairness depend on re-electing the President, it is really simple.

--Federal Court: Obama Appointees Interfered With Prosecution in New Black Panther Voter Intimidation Case

A federal court in Washington, D.C., ruled that a number of President Obama’s political appointees within the U.S. Department of Justice did in fact interfere with the prosecution of two New Black Panther party members who were videotaped holding a night stick and intimidating voters outside a Philadelphia voting station back in 2008.

Following a brief investigation into the 2008 New Black Panthers Case, the Department of Justice filed charges. However, the Panthers didn’t respond and a federal court in Philadelphia entered a “default” against all the defendants.

    Enter Obama.

Shortly after he became president, the DOJ quickly backpedaled and the charges against three of the New Black Panther party members were dropped and a fourth was let off with a restraining order.

A Wisconsin state senator says his adult son was attacked in the early-morning hours on Friday by two men after he confronted them as they removed a Romney-Ryan sign outside his home.

State Sen. Neal Kedzie says his son, Sean, was wrestled to the ground by the two and stuck repeatedly on the head and face. A neighbor heard the commotion and managed to scare the attackers, Sean Kedzie was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital

--Wendy Rosen, the Democratic challenger to Republican Rep. Andy Harris in the 1st Congressional District, withdrew from the race Monday amid allegations that she voted in elections in both Maryland and Florida in 2006 and 2008.

--James O’Keefe, famous for exposing ACORN’s voter registration fraud, and showing how easy it was to get Attorney General Eric Holder’s ballot in a recent election, has caught Democrat Congressmen Jim Moran’s son, Patrick Moran (his father’s field director) discussing how to commit voter fraud, including forging utility bills.

--Democratic state rep Hudson Hallum and 3 others have pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit election fraud during the special election that put him in the Arkansas House of Representatives in 2011. Giving away bottles of vodka and chicken for votes.

If all you Liberal WHINERS would read the article it says quite clearly that the majority of people who got these notices were Republicans.

I can't imagine the GOP purposely sending notices of Ineligibilty to their own voters.

    And from the article:

Cate said a "significant majority have gone to Republican voters, but not exclusively. We've got Democrats who received the letters, we've got independents. We're telling everybody to be on the lookout."

Who ever did this got people that were registered to vote in their own party. We don't know who did it yet. I think it will be interesting to find out. I'm not convinced at all that it may have been a democrat.

Most states with voter machines also have to provide the option of a paper ballot I believe. DEMAND a paper ballot and proof that your ballot was counted. We had to do the same thing in the USVI for this year's elections because of electronic ballot machine problems and rigging.

well when your message sucks as the GOP does and america dosen't want it the only way to win is to cheat. i live in florida . early voting starts on friday and i'm a democrat and low and behold, i haven't gotten my voting information from my election supervisor yet telling me where and when to vote and the sample ballot. i bet the red team got theirs already. but i'm gonna call for the hours and locations . i don't need the sample ballot. and me and my wife are gonna bank our votes early. but here's my question, why do we have to go through the voter fraud from the right every 4 years? put your message out and let ALL the people decide. or are you afraid of rejection? if your hadn't cheated in every election you would never have had a right wing president since hoover. your message is bankrupt and you know it. your party is doomed if you ever pull off your agenda. kill medicare and social security and you won't win an election untill all those people you cut off pass away. ask your paren'ts about how your grand parent's reacted to hoover. 20 years of democratic control. and that's what your staring at. maybe 30-40 if you do it right.

What idots you people ranting about republicans suppressing the vote are. Even though it has been pointed out on numerous posts that a significant majority of the letters were sent to republicans, you just can't seem to comprehend it. So, it's YOUR side trying to suppress the vote, or, based on the small number of letters received, just some jerks idea of a joke.

ALL instances of election fraud, regardless of whom is the perpetrator, need to be taken very seriously AND persecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The right to vote is one of the things that separates this country from being a third world, ass-backward banana republic. Anyone found guilty of committing voter fraud, should be convicted of treason. I know that sounds dramatic and over-the-top but think about it, who among us would want our vote taken away? It has already been weakened to a certain extent! Instances like sending these letters and other stunts involving voter suppression should be a signal for all of us, no matter the party affiliation, to guard against such BS. It may seem inocuous, but the reality is that it is a threat to the country.

These republican morons might not know that EVERY PRINTER has embedded code that can trace every document back to the device. I'm in information technology, and I understand why they did this - to prevent anonymous threats similar to the old days when they cut out letters from the newspapers to create a threat. It is too late; they have the letters. Burn the printer if you want; they have records of who bought it. The people that printed these letters are screwed.

    *************************************************************************************

The EFF's Machine Identification Code Technology project, which has been investigating this for some time, has released the results of their success in identifying the hidden machine identification code which is printed by a Xerox DocuColor color laser printer. The results are startling, and troubling, and sure enough, the code is there. It looks like a bunch of yellow dots - a sort of printer braille, but if you know how to read them, they clearly translate to the date and printer serial number.

You can see the EFF's machine identification codes at their Machine Identification Code Technology project site.

Explains the EFF, "Imagine that every time you printed a document, it automatically included a secret code that could be used to identify the printer - and potentially, the person who used it. Sounds like something from an episode of "Alias," right? Unfortunately, the scenario isn't fictional. In a purported effort to identify counterfeiters, the US government has succeeded in persuading some color laser printer manufacturers to encode each page with identifying information.

        Pigotry,

This is just for you and your claim about it being all President Bush's fault we went to Iraq.

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the
capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver
them. That is our bottom line."

--President Bill Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear.
We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass
        destruction program."

--President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great
deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear,
chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest
        security threat we face."

        --Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times
        since 1983."

--Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the
U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if
appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond
effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction
        programs."

Letter to President Clinton, signed by:

-- Democratic Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others, Oct.
        9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass
destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has
made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."

-Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass
destruction and palaces for his cronies."

-- Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has reinvigorated his weapons
programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs
continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam
continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a
licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the
        United States and our allies."

Letter to President Bush, Signed by:

-- Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), and others, Dec 5, 2001

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a
threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of
the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and th! e means
        of delivering them."

        -- Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical
        weapons throughout his country."

        -- Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to
deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in
        power."

        -- Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and
        developing weapons of mass destruction."

        -- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are
confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and
biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build
up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports
indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..."

        -- Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority
to use force -- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that
a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and
        grave threat to our security."

        -- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working
aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons
within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always
underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass
        destruction."

        -- Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002

"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years,
every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy
his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has
        refused to do"

        -- Rep. Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show
that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons
stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also
given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ...
It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to
increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep
        trying to develop nuclear weapons."

        -- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that
Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity
for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction."

        -- Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal,
murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly
grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And
now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his
consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam
Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real..."

        -- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

At least President Bush had the voted support of Congress before he sent troops to Iraq...President Obama bombed Libya all on his own...with no voted support from Congress. The result was a windfall for the local radical islamist who took the weapons and overthrew a stable and peaceful nation called Mali. More blow back for the President to explain.

Well here goes another one of my conspiracy theories. I bet this is an attempt by a few Republicans to commit voter intimidation and in order to make it seem plausible, these criminals sent a few of these threatening letters to Democrats and Independents - in an attempt to throw the investigators through a loop. The second part of this conspiracy is to get public sentiment to go against Democrats and force attention away from the real issues this country is facing.

You see, the trend has been for Republicans in each state to introduce strict voter laws on the basis that there is wide spread voter fraud. Republicans have become so paranoid because of the Democrats successful voter registrations drives, that they'll do anything to stop it and that means creating a crisis when in reality, there is no crisis. It's what you call the tail wagging the dog!

Many states cannot be trusted to compile verifiable lists of eligible voters. This should be a Federal responsibility and then the states can use the Federal enumerations, if they wish, instead of having to conduct their own. At least some measure of Federal oversight seems necessary, so why not give 'em the whole job? Fraud is fraud and the penalties should be intimidating.

Stay out of the affairs of my state, especially when you are actually clueless to this. What you are circulating is fraudulent.

          DB Akron -

I live in your state and I welcome the increased scrutiny in Ohio! There was just too much crap in a key election:

          From Wikipedia:

Representative Dennis Kucinich commented on allegations of voter suppression in Ohio during the 2004 election:
“Dirty tricks occurred across the state, including phony letters from Boards of Elections telling people that their registration through some Democratic activist groups were invalid and that Kerry voters were to report on Wednesday because of massive voter turnout. Phone calls to voters giving them erroneous polling information were also common.”

In many places, some voters had to wait several hours to vote. Ohio voters, in particular, were plagued by this issue. A study conducted by the Democratic National Committee in the summer of 2005 found that long lines forced three percent of the state's registered voters to abstain.

For example, most Ohio voters used punch-card ballots, and more than 90,000 ballots cast in Ohio were treated as not including a vote for President; this "undervote" could arise because the voter chose not to cast a vote or because of a malfunction of the punch-card system.

          The 2004 election stank!

          That does seem odd, doesn't?

It's odd if you didn't know that Republican strategist, Karl Rove, has done this very thing in the past. He's bugged his own office to make it look like he was being spied on. He has stolen Democratic letterhead paper to send out malicious documents. He invented "Swiftboating" the opposition, along with many, many other dirty political techniques.

This all-too-obvious campaign is blatantly constructed to look like a dirty Democratic trick, when in fact, it's a clever, dirty trick by the Republicans to get the necessary electoral college votes in Florida. Just like they did with the 2000 election where Al Gore won the popular vote (Gore 48.4% - Bush 47.9%- Nader 2.74%) but still lost to George W. Bush due to Florida's voting scandal netting Bush 25 Electoral College votes. We all know what a deep hole George W. dug us into.

But hey, I'm open to see what the investigators find. If it is an overzealous Obama supporter, it was very, very stupid. In any event, I hope they prosecute to the full extent of the law.

No, we didn't fail to realize where most of these letters went. That is part of their downfall, a massive attempt to try to minimalize the news in the past couple of weeks, where the republican party has indeed been culpable. Most people with even a marginal IQ aren't believing the democrats are shooting themselves in the foot with this.

This was not a voter fraud scam.
This was a very sophisticated monetary phishing scam masquarading as a voter fraud scam.
The whole purpose was to get people to divulge their social security numbers and their drivers license numbers.
Couple those with the persons address which the scammers already had and they had all they needed for identity theft.

The letters were sent to both Republicans and Democrats, and it is not known how many letters were sent, those are just the people who complained. Since this letter went to people in both Parties, what could be the reason... their last name? Could it be an attack on Latinos maybe? Both Republicans and Democrats received these letters, but the article said that many more people probably received the letters than those who complained.

This case illustrates what is wrong with the Citizen's United decision. Most likely next week we will see immense untraceable mass mailings similar to these all over America.

Suits me fine for voter fraud to be examined. I doubt that independents are guilty of much voter fraud but if they are, they should be jailed and everyone who got elected illegally, as well.

I agree with UnitedStates - this sounds more like a phishing scam. The letters were sent out primarily to Republicans? In the state of Florida, I wouldn't expect hispanic residents to be primarily Republican, at least not this election term. Of course, one detail which would be very helpful to know, yet the article doesn't tell us, is whether the recipients were primarily of any specific ethnic group. It does tell us some have been voting for years. It sounds like the letters are going to people registered to vote, meaning the perpetrator might know if they are registered as a Republican or Democrat. Although the perpetrator might have a secondary motive of intimidating people out of voting, the fact that some recipients are Democrats and Independents, and that most are Republican, receiving letters questioning their citizenship status, gives me the impression the primary prupose was to get more personal information. They were given 15 days to contest it. How were they supposed to do this? What information was requested on the enclosed Voter Eligibility Form? So close to the election, and with the candidates being so closely tied in this particular Presidential race, I suspect the scammer figured people would be most likely to fill out the form and return it, so they could cast their vote.

This reminds me of the gay guy who bashed his face into the sidewalk and blamed it on three "homophobes"

Or the lesbian who mutilated herself and said she was attacked by a "homophobe"

Of course the the libs are gonna rush to the conclusion that it is the Republicans, even thought they have no proof or evidence to support this claim. It can just as easily be a liberal tactic used to bolster the idea that the "GOP is suppressing votes! See, these letters prove it!"

Less then 100 letters have been reported. I highly doubt that will drastically alter the course of the election. If it we're in the area of 10 - 20 thousand, it might have had an effect. But less than a 100. Ya, it can easily be a liberal trying to create a false notion of "GOP voter suppression."

But lets see after an arrest is actually made. Of course pigotry has already jumped to his conclusion before any real information has been revealed. I'm sure fiesty has made up her mind as well.

This is clearly Dems trying to steal votes. The story stated that the letters came from Seattle, WA. A highly Democratic city which if you remember just a few years back stole the election from Rossi and gave it to Gregoire. This is where they had Rossi win the election by less than 1000 votes so the Dems came in and demanded a recount, which Rossi won, so then they demanded another recount, which Rossi again won but somehow Gregoire's numbers were higher, so then they demanded a third recount, which magically Gregoire won. At that time, I wasn't Democrat or Republican, I was undecided. The crooked back stabbing lying ways of the democraps up here is what made my mind up for me. I also find it funny that a democratic congressman's son was just caught telling someone on video (look up Moran caught in Virginia voter fraud) how to make phony utility bills so that they could go vote fraudulently for Obama and somehow it isn't front page news. If anyone in the Romney/Ryan campaign doesn't say excuse me when they sneeze, cough, or belch then the media rakes them over the coals!!! Lots of dead people voting for the democratic party again. Same ol' same ol'!!!!!

They printed all these inflammable charges in their newspapers in BIG BLACK PRINT, above the fold on the front page, spewing out thousands and thousands of words of indignation. After the votes were officially counted, after the Supreme Court of the United States delared the GOP had won, the ballots were given over to the journalists to count for themselves, their very own selves. They pounced onto those ballots like a suicide bomber pouncing on his 72 virgins. <<<******>>> Guess What !!! The GOP WON! WON! WON! The media had the integrity (both times) to admit the GOP had won (both times). This information was printed (both times) in a few hundred words in the back pages of the newspapers, below the fold. The Diebold electronic voting machines with no paper trail were first used in Florida in 2000.

"DELAND, Fla., Nov. 11 - Something very strange happened on election night to Deborah Tannenbaum, a Democratic Party official in Volusia County. At 10 p.m., she called the county elections department and learned that Al Gore was leading George W. Bush 83,000 votes to 62,000. But when she checked the county's Web site for an update half an hour later, she found a startling development: Gore's count had dropped by 16,000 votes, while an obscure Socialist candidate had picked up 10,000--all because of a single precinct with only 600 voters."

          - Washington Post Sunday , November 12, 2000 ; Page A22

Yes. Something very strange happened in Volusia County on election night November 2000, the night that first Gore won Florida, then Bush, and then as everybody can so well remember there was a tie.

Something strange indeed. But what exactly? In the above report ( click for full version), written days after the election, hotshot Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank goes on to attribute the strange 16,022 negative vote tally from Volusia's precinct 216 to an apparently innocent cause.

"…. faulty 'memory cards' in the machines caused the 16,000-vote disappearance on election night. The glitch was soon fixed," he wrote.

But thanks to recent investigations into Black Box Voting by Washington State writer Bev Harris we now know this explanation is not correct. In fact it is not even in the ballpark.

According to recently discovered internal Diebold Election Systems memos, Global Election Systems' (which was later purchased by Diebold) own technical staff were also stumped by the events in Volusia County/

In Chapter 11 of her new book "Black Box Voting In the 21st Century" released early today in .PDF format at Blackboxvoting.com and here at Scoop Ms Harris observes.

"If you strip away the partisan rancor over the 2000 election, you are left with the undeniable fact that a presidential candidate conceded the election to his opponent based on [results from] a second card that mysteriously appears, subtracts 16,022 votes, then just as mysteriously disappears."

-Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass

a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and
            grave threat to our security."

            -- Sen.

            No comprehension again.

HERE'S THE ANSWER FOLKS - Remember how the GOP has disposed of Democratic
registrations with the firm they just fired because they got caught. The same firm that was in question during
Bush's elections. This time is as easy as a switch on a database and POOF all ID's are gone.

In Colorado, about 800 people whose registrations were lost and they may have as
many as 10,000 people who think they are registered but may not be. All because
the Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler lured new registrars to his site
and now mysteriously lost lots of them.

We were warned that the Sheldon Adelson and Koch brothers would open up the
financial floodgates in the last two weeks. They have already been busted twice
in the last month with voter registration fraud. Next, they will do like in
2000 and 2004 and try actual voter intimidation at the polls.

The last line of defense is Tagg Romney, who bought the company that owns the
voting machines in Ohio. It's the GOP that has really been a fraud in voting.
It's in the news in late September about a GOP consulting firm - Strategic
Allied Consulting. Google 'Strategic Allied Consulting.' and you will find out more about this vast right wing
conspiracy - last time in 2000 such conspiracy was backed up by the Supreme
Court. They also sent out letters in 2004 to residents telling them to go to the wrong voting locations.

This time it would be the Republican party trying to make democrats look bad, to minimize the damage we have seen by the republican party in the last couple of weeks? And the link that repubs
on this thread are posting are fraudulent. -this link shows why -

Over 200 years of voting and as little as 0.01% actual "DOCUMENTED" voter
fraud and we have to show ID because the right wing has made up this perception
of rampant fraud while committing election fraud themselves. Gotta love it.

The Diebold voting machines with no paper trail were first used in Florida in 2000.

I wish more Americans would read and understand George Washington's Farewell Address and his warnings about political parties. We haven't had a choice for the best man for the job and it shows. If you are patriotic to a party then you are sheeple. We need independents, not party liners and special interest supporters. Our Constitution does not have protections and outlines for political parties but you can bet either a Republican or Democrat will win. How many more elections before we figure out that all of our divisions and problems revolve around the parties holding office and put an end to it. We are a government for the people and not a party. Its time to ensure that Independent Americans can get in office and not have to do what a party says to do and start voting for US and whats best for the people and our country. We should be united and determined to solve our nations problems now and not waiting to see who will be elected. Most of those in office now ran on promising to reach across the aisle and make Bipartisan solutions, not get in office and wait for a stacked deck. Wake up and support those Independents that will make decisions for US, the people.

Are you now trying to say that republicans were trying to hide the fact that they don't want democrats to vote by sending scare tactic letters to there own voters! How far fetched can you get????????????? This has all been LIEs from the beginning! What has always been NORMAL is for people to NOT be allowed to vote if they don't have there voter registration cards. NORMAL! Everyone knows this! Its like not being allowed to drive without a drivers license or get a job without a social security card! Things have to be fair and it is NOT fair for you to vote without your voter registration card or at the wrong precint! I went to the wrong precint before and was pointed to the correct one. Why didn't I throw a fit and call the police and try to cause trouble because I'm to lazy to do things the RIGHT WAY! We have to have rules or your throwing out the rules for everyone and that would include the republicans. My son is old enough to vote now so we made sure to get his application in on time and we know where we need to go to vote. How hard is that??? Just one problem - on the English version it said "Vote on Election Day, November 6, 2012". On the Spanish version of the same card, it said, in Spanish "Vote on Election Day, November 8, 2012".

I'm surprised people immediately think the reason behind these letters is intimidation. I don't believe it is voter intimidation. While sure states should use that legal tool to go after these people and investigate the letters, I think the mark is much simpler.

The letters also say the voter must fill out a Voter Eligibility Form in the next 15 days -- and failure to do so will result "in the removal of your name from the voter registration rolls and you will no longer be eligible to vote."

That screams phishing scam for people's information. Especially since it's post marked in Seattle, a large city as far away from Florida as one can get in the continental US. If you think there is absolutely no credence to this, then I know a few Nigerian Princes that need your bank account information to transfer money out of Africa.

The Obama campaign has finally released the transcript of his endorsement interview with the Des Moines Register–and it is clear why they were reluctant to do so: the President says he has “absolutely” no regrets about ignoring the economy during the first two years of his term, when Democrats controlled Congress.

Here is the key part of the exchange:

Q: Yes, that begs a question from us, Mr. President. Some say you had a super majority in your first two years and had this incredible opportunity, but because of what you were talking about, as you were running, you had to go to get Obamacare done. Do you have any regrets taking on some of the economic issues, some of the issues that we’re talking about for your second term, that when you had the chance, so to speak, during your first — do you have any regrets that you didn’t do that at that time?

THE PRESIDENT: Absolutely not, Laura. Remember the context. First of all, Mitch McConnell has imposed an ironclad filibuster from the first day I was in office. And that’s not speculation. I mean, this is — it’s amply recorded. He gave a speech saying, my task is to defeat the President.

So we were able to pass emergency action with the stimulus, but we had to get two votes from Republicans…

Obama’s response is misleading. Republicans made no such filibuster threat at the outset of his first term. He refers to remarks made by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in late 2010, not in late 2008 or early 2009. Republicans made no such threat, and in fact attempted to work together with the then-popular Obama.

                niece1964,

Thank you for making the Democratic Electorates point. Why do Republican States insist on the need for a Drivers License or Social Security card or Voter I.D. Card to vote. I mean the one the thing that makes our country so appealing is that you can vote and no one would know how you voted, who you were... complete anonymity! Now, if we were some third world country in Africa, Asia, or South America that had a dubious voting rights history...then Republicans might just have an argument. When the vote is determined on the basis of millions, like it is here in the U.S., it makes it hard for anyone to claim fraud of that scale. Voter fraud, to the extent that the Republican Party was claiming in 2008 was investigated by the press and the Federal Elections Commission and guess what they found:

A new nationwide analysis of more than 2,000 cases of alleged election fraud over the past dozen years shows that in-person voter impersonation on Election Day, which has prompted 37 state legislatures to enact or consider tougher voter ID laws, was virtually non-existent.

The analysis of 2,068 reported fraud cases by News21, a Carnegie-Knight investigative reporting project, found 10 cases of alleged in-person voter impersonation since 2000. With 146 million registered voters in the United States, those represent about one for every 15 million prospective voters.

So, basically, all Republicans have managed to do was intimidate, misinform and outright lie to the themselves and the American Electorate. As a Republican party, you are archaic and inept! People who support an archaic and inept Republican party, deserve 4 more years of Obama/Biden and 8 years of Hillary Clinton! How's them apples?

The hatred displayed in the last days of this campaign is alarming. What about this intelligent, thoughtful President is so deserving of such vitriol?

I fear hate may win on Nov 6.

@ Antha - well said! I don't get it either, and share your fears.

There was an article in Vanity Fair a month ago or so that detailed just how thoughtfully President Obama makes his decisions. . . .

                here's the link:
                http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/2012/10/michael-lewis-profile-barack-obama

I have been voting for more than 40 years, and have seen my share of politicians 'change their minds' to win votes. But I have NEVER seen anything like R & R who will say absolutely anything to get votes & grab power.

There was a guy some months back who said all the Repug's needed was a guy in the White House with enough working digits to sign their agenda into law . . . but they have changed it so many times! Ryan today preaching about suddenly caring about the 47%, when his budget would cut programs drastically for those very people.

                scary indeed.

                VOTE O & JOE!

You got to be on something BigAlVegas! It's always a Democrat that wants to give illegals the drivers license so they can get through the voter line! Democrats don't even care if legal citizens work, or go to college! They want to help, all the people of the world who have a "Dream", forgetting about the children of legal citizens who can't get a good job, or get a seat in a classroom.

My dad once told me the dumbest person in the room is the
one who thinks he is the smartest and the second dumbest is the person who
believes him. This pretty well sums up O
and Joe. I keep hearing about how intelligent
and thoughtful President Obama is but other than a couple of autobiographies (and
most critical readers agree they are not that well written) and anecdotal
reflections of his thought process from second and third party writers there is
no factual volume giving us insight into his true depth of thought or
intelligence. So please, don’t give me
any more drivel, or should I say malarkey to quote the other great thinker that the dems worship, about
him being the smartest President we have ever had. Show me some proof.

I love how people cry about the ID law that was passed. I see no problem with having people show an ID at the polls. If someone wants to vote and they don't have an ID then go get one, what's the big deal, they had it where you can get your ID for free. I don't want to hear that there's people that can't get one, if they can't get one then stop crying and find away or don't vote.

I don't know how well Romney/Ryan will do to this country, but I know that lots of senators in their party are sick in the mind and that worries a lot. You judge someone based on the group they are with and this is an age old method that still stand true.

Just earlier, a Republican senator said pregnancy through rape is "god's work", this means that God intended for people to get rape in order to get pregnant. This also mean that rape is considered acceptable and people need to thanks God and the RAPIST for receiving them.

Vote for more jobs for people from India and China. Romney's plan: Allow 1.25 million High Tech workers to immigrate claiming a shortage in those sectors even though unemployment in those sectors are double what they were prior to the Bush meltdown. He claims these new immigrants will create support jobs for Americans. Like selling them big macs and ringing up their purchases at Wal Mart. He also wants to eliminate caps on H1B visa's. Romney even said he wanted to staple a green card to the diploma's of those in the top 20% of their class in foreign countries in the 2nd debate. Do you people realise how such a plan would affect future graduates?

Result: Graduating American students will not only have to compete with fellow students from our Universities and Colleges but millions of top students from around the world willing to work for far less. Net result will be lower pay for all upper income jobs including Doctors, Dentists, Architects, Engineers, Teachers, Accountants and many others. Electing a vulture capitalist may mean 12 million new jobs but they'll go to imported workers. Don't be fooled.

Mississippi NAACP leader sent to prison for 10 counts of voter fraud

                  By Matthew Vadum - 7/29/2011

While NAACP President Benjamin Jealous lashed out at new state laws requiring photo ID for voting, an NAACP executive sits in prison, sentenced for carrying out a massive voter fraud scheme.

In a story ignored by the national media, in April a Tunica County, Miss., jury convicted NAACP official Lessadolla Sowers on 10 counts of fraudulently casting absentee ballots. Sowers is identified on an NAACP website as a member of the Tunica County NAACP Executive Committee.

Sowers received a five-year prison term for each of the 10 counts, but Circuit Court Judge Charles Webster permitted Sowers to serve those terms concurrently, according to the Tunica Times, the only media outlet to cover the sentencing.

“This crime cuts against the fabric of our free society,” Judge Webster said.

Sowers was found guilty of voting in the names of Carrie Collins, Walter Howard, Sheena Shelton, Alberta Pickett, Draper Cotton and Eddie Davis. She was also convicted of voting in the names of four dead persons: James L. Young, Dora Price, Dorothy Harris, and David Ross.

It's not clear who sent the letters, which were machine postmarked in Seattle. Couvertier said the FBI in Tampa is working with its Seattle office to track down the perpetrator.

Seattle eh? A bastion of Right Wing Conservatism!

Cate said a "significant majority have gone to Republican voters, but not exclusively. We've got Democrats who received the letters, we've got independents. We're telling everybody to be on the lookout."

Does anyone know the REAL Romney? Romney wants to be President. This would be a wonderful family crest. He doesn't really give a flying leap about you or me. He is an empty vessel and God knows Rove, Norquist and the Koch Brothers will be calling the shots. God help all of us if he wins. Take a minute and honestly ask yourself what you know about this man? I know he's rich, loves his family and his church. I also know that he traveled to China in 1998 and shortly afterwards, Bain started closing down businesses they owned and shipped the jobs overseas. I know this man would do anything not to show his tax returns....other candidates have. Why has he steadfastly refused? I always believed in Americans and their sense of fair play. If Romney/Ryan win, that belief will be gone forever. Knowing just how little we really know about this etch-a-sketch, working digits plutocrat, flip flopping man, America just might elect him. All the economists say that in, all probability, within the next 4 years, America will be back on its feet. We have made progress, slowly but surely. Elect Romney and Ryan and Romney will have his taxes decreased and Ryan will have women dying from using coat hangers....nothing more! I'm praying for America and Americans had better start.

Aren't you the naive one. Everyone is running around buying their iPhones and iPads by a company that people "love" but their products are made in China. Until people's attitude and commitment to want to buy "American" change, blaming someone like Romney is just plain dumb.

The only people that believe your "assertion" are loons from the left. And while you are at...here's an update...contrary to the liberal left mantra, no election was "stolen". Although, given how badly Obama is doing right now in the polls I'm sure we will see Black Panthers hanging out at the voting booths telling people to go home...

I swear, I have never seen such vitriol, such stretching of the truth, so many outright lies, and now, so many instances of voter suppression/intimidation efforts as I've seen with this election cycle!

And, while there is plenty of blame to go around on both sides, the vast majority seems to be perpetuated by the extreme right wing of the Republican Party (the Tea Party, the various super-pacs led by knuckle-draggers such as Karl Rove and the Koch brothers). And I have no doubt that, even though the haters will never admit it, it's their own deep-seeded racial/social prejudice that may have something to do with it.

At any rate, I'll be so freaking happy once this election is over with! It's obvious to anyone who follows how politics is done that no matter who wins, we will not pay down the current deficit, we will not create the millions of jobs needed for a healthy economy, we will not come down hard on American companies who outsource jobs, we will not do ANYTHING about China's blatant currency manipulation and trade practices, we will NOT make every effort needed to become less dependent on foreign energy sources. All that will happen, in the next four years, is more bickering, more polarizing, more of one side stonewalling the other in Congress.

That's why I'm voting Libertarian this year!

antha: You lost me when you said THIS thoughtful, intelligent President. What has he done that's been thoughtful or intelligent? What has he done to help the economy? Why is 4 straight years of higher unemployment under Obama than at any point under Bush better, thoughtful, or intelligent. What thoughtful, intelligent plan does Obama have to reduce the deficit. How is it thoughtful or intelligent to claim that you've reduced the deficit by $1 trillion during the last 4 years when the deficit has increased by over $6 trillion during that time period. How is it thoughtful or intelligent to claim for 2 weeks that a US Ambassador was killed as a result of a spontaneous protest from a film that no one saw, and on the anniversary of 9/11, no less? You may want to call it vitriol, but the fact is that Obama and his entire administration lied about it and his PR machine, NBC included, did everything they could to cover it up.

Scalzo: 3 black panthers dressed in fatigues with batons in their hands at the door of a voting place isn't intended to intimidate? I suppose you think that requiring a valid ID card is intimidation.

If this was Karl Rove as you claim, why were the letters sent primarily to republicans?

Considering that the letters have gone mostly to republicans, and they were postmarked from Seattle (a liberal state and area), I think it is more likely a DNC ploy to intimidate republicans so that they don't go out and vote, hoping to throw Florida to the democrats.

So, why don't we all just wait and see how this turns out.

And I think you are swallowing it hook, line and sinker. Its not the democrat party who has been in the news lately for this kind of thing, this is just the republican party, or some far right faction of it, trying to minimalize damage. It doesn't take a genius to see what is going on here.

                    Obama why?
Is this quarter's GDP, an anemic 1.3%, lower this year, then last year.
Is there 2.3% fewer Americans working today, then when you became President!
Why, is median household income down, 8.4% in America, since 2009.
Why, is Black unemployment 16%, in America today.
Why, is Hispanic unemployment 9.9%, in America today.
Why, is manufacturing in America, down 1.2%, this year alone.
Why, are 19.9%, of all female military veterans, out of work, in America today.
Why, are 1 in 6 Americans living in poverty.
Why, do you add 4 billion dollars, in new US debt every day, think China.
Why, are you imposing on America, 21 new taxes and fees to fund Obamacare.

Rick, read the article. The biased repub official reporting says that the majority of the REPORTED letters went to repubs, but that same repub official reports that he realizes that the actual MAJORITY of the letters will never be reported. Of course, that great majority who do not report things like these letters are always the least self-confident, the least self-assured, or in other words, newer citizens, minorities or democrats who are usually discriminated against as in the last Florida election scam. I personally new of some white Democrats who moved to Florida from our state and were there long enough and legally registered but then were not allowed to vote by some unethical mechanism that I cannot remember the details of, and they did not live in Miami or near there.

It was probably started by Nathan Sproul. If you don't know who that is he's the GOP get out the vote guy who was accused of multiple counts of fraud in 2004 and 2008 that they rehired this election. Just because a Republican douchebag did somthing with letters before, doesn't mean that this situation is the same.. That being the case, it can be argued that a DEMOCRAT did this to frame the Republican Party to make it appear as a cover up.. The fact of the matter is that Republicans are the ones that want to stop people from voting, most likely those that are illegal immigrants. Unfortunately, when you try to scrub the voting rolls with very little information, you end up doing it by names, and many names that sound foreign and could be illigal immigrants, might just be republican voters. The Republicans could very well be profiling their own voters

Obama is pleading the fifth when asked about when he learned of three emails sent by the State Department to him on September 11, 2012, informing him that the US Consulate in Benghazi was under attack and that a terrorist group was claiming responsibility for the attack.

The White House has also refused to say when they met with the National Security Council following the terror attack.
"We decline to comment," said White House National Security staff aide Debbie Bird.

The emails are important because they suggest the White House knew of the true nature of the attacks from the start, yet inexplicably spent the next three weeks telling the public they were spontaneous protests that turned violent.

The White House has suggested they were overwhelmed with information following the attacks. Jay Carney told reporters this morning, ""There were emails about all sorts of information that was becoming available in the aftermath of the attack. The email you're referring to was an open-source, unclassified email referring to an assertion made on a social media site that everyone in this room had access to and knew about instantaneously. There was a variety of information coming in."

"The whole point of an intelligence community and what they do is to assess strands of information and make judgments about what happened and who was responsible," Carney added. "I would refer you to what we've already said about, and what the DNI has already said about, the initial assessments of the intelligence community, and the fact that throughout this process, I and others made very clear that our preliminary assessments were preliminary, that an investigation was underway, and that as more facts became available, we would make the American people aware of them."

Carney insisted, "This was an open-source, unclassified email about a posting on a Facebook site. I would also note I think that within a few hours, that organization itself claimed that it had not been responsible. Neither should be taken as fact. That's why there's an investigation underway."

The emails were sent by the State Department to several government officials including members of the President's staff, so there's no reason why he should have been unaware of them.

Ultimately, if the President and his staff cannot assess a dynamic situation and respond appropriately, even after two to three weeks following, then questions must be raised about the competency and functionality of the current administration.

                      @ Janine-1645002

I can't imagine the GOP purposely sending notices of ineligibilty to their own voters.

@ Nibor: Karl Rove sent these to Republican? Have you had this condition long? Has living in your mothers basement helped?

This all-too-obvious campaign is blatantly constructed to look like a dirty Democratic trick, when in fact, it's a clever, dirty trick by the Republicans to get the necessary electoral college votes in Florida.

Just like they did with the 2000 election where Al Gore won the popular vote (Gore 48.4% - Bush 47.9%- Nader 2.74%) but still lost to George W. Bush due to Florida's voting scandal netting Bush 25 Electoral College votes for the win. We all know what a deep hole George W. dug us into. If it worked before, it will work again.

But hey, I'm open to see what the investigators find. If it is an overzealous Obama supporter, it was very, very stupid. In any event, I hope they prosecute to the full extent of the law.

                      Ron 1861300,

Nationwide, the GOP has led the voter suppression effort. The party has ran into state house and senatorial chambers to disenfranchise the poor, minorities, the disabled, students and any segment of the population that is more incline to vote Democratic. The article does states that the majority of the letters went to Republican voters. The letters were also sent to Democratic and Independent voters.

Considering that the right wing has lead the voter restriction efforts, the Republicans are suspect. If some of the letters went to GOP supporters, who knows, maybe the right in its nefarious efforts, "tripped their own selves up."

A financial interest held by Mitt Romney’s son in a voting machine company whose systems are being used in Ohio threatens public confidence in the election’s integrity, according to Jennifer Brunner, the state’s former top elections official.

“It doesn’t look good for a presidential candidate’s son to be an investor in a voting machine company,” Brunner told MSNBC.com. “That has to do with public trust in the process.”

Hart Intercivic supplies voting machines that will be used in Hamilton County, Ohio, one of the state’s most populous counties. In 2008, Barack Obama won the county with 209,000 votes—his third highest vote total among all Ohio’s 88 counties.

H.I.G. Capital, a large investment fund, is a “significant investor” in Hart Intercivic, according to an announcement put out last year by Hart. And H.I.G., in turn, is one of the largest partners, with nearly $10 billion of equity capital, of Solamere Capital, the investment fund founded and run by Tagg Romney (pictured), Mitt’s eldest son, The Nation recently reported*.

Only about 100 letters were reported - yet from these 100 letters a large amount of negative reaction has been made against the Democrats. It's quite ingenious actually - use a 100 GOPhers as sacrificial lambs for the party (knowing that they of course will still vote GOP anyways) to get publicity and negative print against the opponent.

"David Couvertier, a spokesman for the FBI in Tampa, said his office opened up an investigation into the possible attempt at voter intimidation on Wednesday after receiving reports that eligible voters throughout the state have received the letters"

Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) has ordered the state to purge all "non-citizens" from the voting rolls prior to November's election. But that list compiled by the Scott administration is so riddled with errors that, in Miami-Dade County alone, hundreds of U.S. citizens are being told they are ineligible to vote, ThinkProgress has learned exlusively.

I wonder if the FBI started an investigation. When the state of Florida sent out letters to legal voters and told them that they had to prove their citizenship or they couldn't vote?

That first purge list came from the DMV as you well know. The Florida Governor has been trying since January 2012 to get the Dept. of Homeland Security's list of legal aliens. The Justice Dept. took them to court to block their access. It was only an August court opinion that allowed them access. What I can't understand is why you want ineligible voters on the rolls in the first place? Is it because they will nullify REPUBLICAN votes?

Why would Republican officials try to dissuade Republicans from voting? Or did you not read the entire article?

"Cate said a 'significant majority have gone to Republican voters, but not exclusively. We've got Democrats who received the letters, we've got independents. We're telling everybody to be on the lookout.'"

Most of the letters were sent to Republicans. Even if you think the GOP is the most evil, corrupt, and monstrous group in the world, why on earth would they orchestrate a risky crime like this that costs them more voters than their opponents? If they did pull something like this, they would do so in a way that might help them win, not in a way that would make them lose more voters than any other candidate.

The GOP still has 6 votes but the D's lose 4 votes, it is a win situation.

There is NO evidence this is even remotely connected to the GOP and would be absolutely ridiculous for them to do. Arguing that this is clearly the GOP trying to reverse psychology their way into stealing the election makes as much sense as claiming that any time a Sikh is harassed or killed it is really a conspiracy by the Sikh community to make non-Sikhs look bad. It's stupid, completely baseless, and requires an ego so inflated that one is willing to attribute any illegal or immoral act to those they don't agree with, no matter what it is or who it targets.

Republicans/conservatives don't need to use "reverse pyschology", early voter turnout is beginning to show record participation and it's just starting.

It's the economy, unemployment, Chief Executive lies and "The Benghazi Failure".

Why offer jobs to the locals when the ChiKnees work for 1/10 the wage and they must abort any manager's seed spill.Executive Lie's and if you had you @!$%#ing shotgun with the rest of the Merc's in Benghazi, you would have lived and Our Ambassador?

This whole conspiracy stuff is giving me a headache. Reverse psychology, get Republicans riled up, loose a few Democrats but gain independents. If I had any hair I would be pulling it out. I vote to intimidate voters the old fashioned way! A couple of thugs with ball bats out in front of the polling sites. That's a tried and true prosecution proof method.

I guess it's possible that some Republican in liberal Seattle sent those letters to mostly Flordia Republicans, but not likely. Chances are, its some college aged Obama supporter. My question is how did they get all of the address of Flordia Republican voters?

If you picked random people from the phone book it could well end up having more republicans than democrats receiving them. The fact that only minorities, especially people who were new citizens would be the only ones likely to fall for it it's easy to see why people would point to the GOP.

--This is how the Left rolls when you don't agree with them. Disgusting!!!

So you are saying that the Dems, like you, are smart enough to recognize this as a blatant act of reverse psychology; sending the letters to a majority of Republicans. However, the Dems in Florida receiving the letters will 100% of the time be fooled into not voting? SMH

Rich 298746 – I don’t know where you were during the late 60’s
but I know where I was and I do not begrudge soon to be President Romney one
bit for serving his church while I served my country. I am one of those Constitution loving, God
fearing, gun owning little men with no guts that you refer to. In many ways you are no different from the
people I found when I returned home. They
had been saturated by liberal hate so they took out their anger on the noble
men and women who sacrificed some or all for their Country. Those who died did so with honor and dignity.
Don’t profane their loss by using it to make a point about Gov. Romney. Also, I am now 64 years old and hopefully a bit wiser than I was in my youth. However,
if you would like to put my AK in the place where the sun don’t shine you are
                                more than welcome to try.

And to UNOITALL don’t be a jerk. Responsible gun owners don’t boast.

With Bill we knew what we were voting for a pot smoking, womanizing man opposed to war. With Romney we also know who you're voting for, a coward who sends others sons to war while his are safe. If elected he'll do as he did when he was young. Start a war and insure his sons are spending their time in the wilds of France or Germany where they're nice and safe.

Just because someone doesn't lay down their life for their Country doesn't mean that they are a draft dodger, maybe he thought he could better his life and that of his family with an education.. People do it all the time as opposed to enlisting.. Having a passion for your God and studying toward that end doesn't make you a coward.. SMH.. The Country could always use "a few good men", if you're so inclined to support the military, by all means ENLIST..

I worked in the Chaplain's office in the Army during the Viet Nam era. I saw a lot of deferments given to concientious objectors through religious reasons. The difference here folks was the fact that the rich and poor were equal when there was a DRAFT, unless you could go to Canada. I still think to this day that conscientious objectors should still serve their country in some way and even people with disablities and physical challenges. If the public can't discriminate against people for religious reasons or disabilities, then they could serve in a non-combattant form of service say at VA Hospitals or military offices in clerking positions. Right now since the elimination of the DRAFT we have forced the wars on the backs of the poor and the middle class. Many of them join our branches of service to get a chance at an education they otherwise couldn't get. The poor and middleclass have carried us through Iraq and Afghanistan to provide us the freedoms to work, play and earn as much money as we can, and they are taken for granted. Everyone should serve their country in some capacity. Face it folks from now on, we will have few people who run for the presidential office or any office who have actually been in the Service. We can't say too much against Romney and his sons for not serving or Obama until we change back to a DRAFT. However, it's much easier to understand the plight of the soldier if you have "been there and done it".

                                    • But his status as 'Mormon missionary' exempted him from the draft
                                    • Future GOP presidential candidate dressed in smart, preppy clothes
                                    • Romney's father George was the Governor of Michigan at the time

Taken at the height of the swinging Sixties, Mr Romney holds a sign declaring 'Speak Out, Don't Sit In' as, alongside like-minded individuals, he proclaims his support for Lyndon Johnson's ever-expanding draft.

But, in a marked contrast to the relaxed dress sense associated with that decade's youth movement, he is wearing smart white slacks, a white buttoned-up shirt and a dark blazer.

A newspaper clipping headlined 'Governor's son pickets the pickets' states: 'Mitt Romney, son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, was one of the pickets who supported the Stanford University administration in opposition to sit-in demonstrators.'

The photograph was taken on May 20, 1966, shortly after a group of students had taken over the office of Stanford University President Wallace Sterling.

They were protesting at the introduction of a test designed to help the authorities decide who was eligible for the draft.

Mr Romney was one of approximately 150 conservative students who counter-picketed the sit-in.

Carey Coulter was one of the demonstrators alongside Mr Romney that day. He told BuzzFeed.com: 'We were there to get an education and these people holding the administration hostage was antithetical to that.

You have to be the vilest scum to believe that suppressing the vote of any citizen is a worthy goal.

I say that regardless of the fact that the story notes that the "majority have gone to Republican voters" (along with some Democrats and Independents). Whoever the perpetrator may be, he or she is still a loathsome oppressor of our most sacred American right.

Jay in Atlanta, based on your comment about voting being " our most sacred American right" is it OK for me to assume that you would support any and all legal means, such as photo voter ID and proof of citizenship, before allowing people to vote?

Wasn't my man Bill Clinton a draft dodger too?

Finally an honest republican. One that admits Willard was a draft dodger but he's ok with it because Clinton was also. The main difference is that Bill Clinton protested the war he believed was wrong while Willard applauded it as the right thing to do. Then hid in France.

Voting is the very basis of our democracy, and those who tamper with Constitutional rights are committing treason of the highest order. That so may domestic enemies are hard at work to remove the rights of citizens, and the media is virtually silent about such an affront to our basic liberties, is indicative of the demise of free press, along with every other freedom we once had. I blame NBC for giving greater importance to jessica Biel's wedding dress. than to the slime among us who are out to sabotage our freedoms. NBC, do your job.

Google 'Strategic Allied Consulting.' and you will find out more about this vast right wing conspiracy - last time in 2000 such conspiracy was backed up by the Supreme
Court. They also sent out letters in 2004 to residents telling them to go to the wrong voting locations.

This time it would be the Republican party trying to make democrats look bad, to minimize the damage we have seen by the republican party in the last couple of weeks.

A man originally reported to have been working for the Republican Party of Virginia was arrested by the Rockingham County, Va., Sheriff’s Office on Thursday and charged with attempting to destroy voter registration forms by tossing them into a dumpster behind a shopping center in Harrisonburg, Va.

“Prosecutors charged him with four counts of destruction of voter registration applications, eight counts of failing to disclose voter registration applications and one count of obstruction of justice,” according to a report late Thursday afternoon from TPM’s Ryan Reilly. More charges could be forthcoming, according to officials.

But there is more to the story, as evidence emerges to document that it ties into a still-expanding nationwide GOP Voter Registration Fraud Scandal that the BRAD BLOG first began reporting in late September, after we’d learned that the Republican Party of Florida had turned in more than 100 allegedly fraudulent and otherwise suspect voter registration forms in Palm Beach County. The story has continued to widen ever since, to a dozen Florida counties and several other states, now including Virginia, and even to the upper-echelons of the Republican Party itself.

The man arrested today was 23-year-old Colin Small of Phoenixville, Pa. As it turns out, he does not only work for the Virginia Republican Party. According to an online profile, he appears to be working for the Republican National Committee and, prior to that, served as an Intern for Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Joseph Tanfani at the Los Angeles Times is reporting that Small was “working as a supervisor as part of a registration operation in eight swing states financed by the Republican National Committee.”

He was first hired, says Tanfani, by Strategic Allied Consulting, the firm owned by the disgraced GOP operative and paid Mitt Romney political consultant Nathan Sproul. Even before this year’s registration fraud scandal, which began with Strategic in Florida, Sproul’s companies have long been accused of, though never charged with, destroying Democratic voter registrations in election after election and state after state, going back to at least 2004. Despite that, Sproul was hired by the Bush/Cheney campaign in 2004, by the McCain/Palin Campaign in 2008, and by Romney during the Republican Primary cycle.

Sproul’s company, Strategic Allied Consulting, was hired by the RNC in August for more than $3 million, reportedly as its sole voter registration company this cycle. His company was said to have been fired by the RNC and five different battleground state Republican parties several weeks ago, after fraudulent voter registrations began to emerge across Florida. Some of those questionable applications included address changes for existing voters, such that Florida election officials told the BRAD BLOG they worry voters could find themselves disenfranchised come Election Day. In Florida, as in many states, provisional ballots cast at precincts other than where voters are officially registered will not be counted. So changing the addresses on voter registrations without voters’ knowledge is a serious crime with potentially very serious consequences.

Reilly’s report at TPM says that Small “worked for PinPoint, a company hired to register voters on behalf of the Republican Party of Virginia.” In fact, PinPoint Staffing placed ads to hire workers for Strategic Allied Consulting in FL, VA and a number of other states, though the BRAD BLOG has learned that the company removed many of those ads once the scandal began to break in Florida. They have since modified some of their newer ads to hide their ties to the Republican Party.

In response to queries we sent to Sproul late Thursday, his crisis spokesperson, David Leibowitz, attempted to distance his client from the arrest of the Republican Party worker in Virginia, claiming that “the only connection between Sproul and Pinpoint is that Nathan has, on occasion, used Pinpoint to hire some workers.”

It was PinPoint Staffing, in fact, which reportedly hired the man Strategic blamed for the fraudulent registration forms turned in originally in Palm Beach. But while PinPoint continues to seek workers for GOP-related efforts around the country, and as Sproul’s operations continue in “as many as 30 states”, it is the Republican National Committee’s response to the entire affair, including to the arrest today, that may be the most troubling…

What the Rethuglicans got 95 letters and the Democrats got 94. I guess the way Rethuglicans do arithmetic one is a vast. majority. Clioton was right the Rethuglicans just don't add up.

You are now making up stuff to try and make your own story? I'm not sure how 95>94 some how equals "significant majority have gone to Republican voters". Someone needs to go back to the 2nd grade.

We don't know who sent the letters but the only party that's committed proven fraud in this election is by republicans. Republican fraud this election includes destroying ballots, changing addresses to invalidate votes and forging voter applications. From the mass cases of fraud already proven where arrests have been made of people hired directly by the republican party we know who the liars and cheats are.

Oh pardon me, the untruths, and it aint a crime to be rich, ask half the demo's in congress.

My understanding is that the letters were aimed at Republican voters and sent by someone performing an ILLEGAL act on behalf of desperate democRats.

Republicans are now playing defense over the role of a well-paid operative, Nathan Sproul, in a voter registration scandal that emerged in Florida and has spread to other states.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it was reviewing “numerous” claims involving a company that Mr. Sproul runs to determine if a criminal investigation is warranted. Complaints have surfaced in 10 Florida counties, among them allegations that registrations had similar signatures or false addresses, or were filed under the names of dead people. In other cases, party affiliations appeared to have been changed.

In recent days, similar claims against Mr. Sproul have arisen in Nevada and Colorado.

Was it 2004, in the state of Florida, that an appointee of Republican Governor Jeb Bush certified the results of the Election as being accurate even though there were numerous accounts of voter intimidation and fraud at numerous voting locations?

Jeb and his appointed cronies ensured that "brother George" got re-elected and we all know how that ended. The "Worst President in American History"comes to mind!
