Infidelity, intrigue and politics: a timeline of the David Petraeus case

A June 23, 2011, file photo shows Paula Broadwell, second from left, watching as Gen. David Petraeus and his wife, Holly Petraeus arrive for a Senate Select Intelligence Committee hearing on Petraeus' nomination to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

What began with David Petraeus’ surprise resignation as CIA director on Friday resulting from an extramarital affair has now spiraled into a complicated story of infidelity, intrigue and politics.

Petraeus’ admission of an extramarital affair quickly led to his biographer, Paula Broadwell, and an examination of her relationship with the decorated war hero. The length of the FBI’s investigation of “menacing” emails sent to Petraeus’ family friend Jill Kelley, and the timing of the announcement of his departure from the Obama administration fueled conspiracy theories. Then Gen. John Allen, Petraeus’ successor as military commander in Afghanistan, was embroiled in the scandal, accused by U.S. officials of sending “inappropriate” emails to Kelley.

To help you keep the facts straight, NBC News has compiled this timeline, based on reporting by NBC News and other published accounts:

Spring 2006 -- Paula Broadwell meets Gen. David Petraeus, when she introduces herself after he gave a speech at Harvard's Kennedy School, where Broadwell was working on a master's degree, the Wall Street Journal reported

October 2008 -- Petraeus takes over as head of U.S. Central Command, based at MacDill Air Force Base. While serving there, he reportedly meets Jill Kelley and her husband, Dr. Scott Kelley. She is described in various accounts as a volunteer “social liaison” between the community and the base.

2008 -- Broadwell begins her doctoral dissertation, "a case study of General Petraeus’ leadership," according to Rolling Stone magazine.

June 2009 -- Broadwell and her husband, Scott, purchase a home in Charlotte, N.C., the Charlotte Observer reports

June 2010 -- Petraeus is named as replacement for Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the top commander in Afghanistan after the latter makes impolitic remarks to a Rolling Stone reporter. Broadwell decides to turn her dissertation into a book.

July 2010-July 2011 – According to an online biography of Broadwell that was taken down after Petraeus’ resignation, she made multiple trips to Afghanistan during this period, where she “embedded with the general, his headquarters staff and his soldiers on the front lines of fighting across Afghanistan to chronicle the experiences of this American general as they are brought to bear in the terrible crucible of war.”

Aug. 31, 2011 -- Petraeus retires from the U.S. Army, departs Afghanistan.

Sept. 6, 2011 -- Petraeus takes over as director of the CIA.

Steven Boylan, a former spokesman for Gen. David Petraeus, discusses how the affair with biographer Paula Broadwell started, saying the general is "embarrassed and keenly aware of the hurt and pain he's caused."

Early November 2011 – According to former Petraeus spokesman Steve Boylan, who had spoken to his former boss after his resignation, Petraeus' affair with  Broadwell began around this time, approximately two months after he took the CIA job.

January 2012 – “All In, The Education of General David Petraeus,” by Paula Broadwell with Vernon Loeb is published by Penguin Press.

May 2012 – “Menacing” emails – five to 10 of them, according to the Wall Street Journal -- began arriving in Jill Kelley's inbox, NBC’s Michael Isikoff and Pete Williams report.

Emails on 'comings and goings' of Petraeus, other military officials escalated FBI concerns

June 2012 – The FBI investigation begins. A source close to Kelley tells Isikoff that she took the emails, which she viewed as harassing or menacing, to the FBI. The source said the anonymous emails didn’t mention Petraeus by name, but subsequent emails – sent from multiple alias accounts -- contained references to the "comings and goings" of high-level military officials -- including events that were not on any public schedule. This raised the question as to whether somebody had access to sensitive -- and classified -- information about the CIA director.

Paula Broadwell is pictured before embarking on a national book tour to promote "All In," her biography of Gen. David Petraeus.

July 2012 – Approximate end of the affair between Broadwell and Petraeus, according to former Petraeus spokesman Steve Boylan, who  tells NBC’s Kristen Welker in early November that it ended “about four months ago.”

Late  summer -- Attorney General Eric Holder is told that agents have discovered an email link between Petraeus and Broadwell, which included exchange of “explicit details of a sexual nature,” according to the Wall Street Journal

September – FBI agents interview Paula Broadwell for first time, NBC’s Pete Williams reports.

Oct. 27  -- House Majority Leader Eric Cantor speaks to an FBI agent who had worked on the Petraeus investigation, according to Cantor spokesman Doug Heye. The agent-- who had originally contacted Rep. Dave Reichert, a Republican from Washington -- raised concerns that "sensitive information" relating to Petraeus may have been "compromised," Heye said. The timing of the tip to Reichert is not clear.

Week of Oct. 29 – FBI agents interview Petraeus and Broadwell (for a second time), according to NBC’s Michael Isikoff.

Approximately Oct. 30-31 – Somewhere around this time frame, Petraeus traveled to Tripoli to conduct his own personal inquiry into Benghazi, according to author Bob Woodward, appearing on "Meet the Press" on Nov. 11. NBC’s Andrea Mitchell confirmed that Petraeus had recently traveled to Libya.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell and the Washington Post's Bob Woodward visit Meet the Press to examine the fallout from CIA chief David Petraeus' extramarital affair.

Oct. 31 – After conferring with his chief of staff, Steve Stombres, and Richard Cullen, a former attorney general of Virginia, Cantor had Stombres call the FBI chief of staff to relay the information he had received from the FBI agent, NBC News has reported.

Nov. 1 -- Cantor aide Steve Stombres is told by the FBI that it cannot confirm or deny an investigation, but the bureau official assured the leader's office it was acting to protect national security.

Nov. 2 – The FBI concludes its investigation, according to NBC News’ Michael Isikoff, citing senior U.S. law enforcement official; the  last FBI interviews with both Broadwell and Petraeus also took place this day, NBC’s  Pete Williams reports, citing federal officials.

Nov. 6 – Justice Department informs Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Nov. 7 – Clapper informs the White House.

Nov. 8 –  Petraeus calls White House Deputy Chief of Staff Thomas Donilon and asks to see the president, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reports. The White House tells Obama of the FBI investigation of Petraeus and his admission of an extramarital affair.

Nov. 9 – Obama accepts Petraeus’ resignation; Senate and House leaders first learn of it from media calls. They then speak to Petraeus, but don’t hear directly from the president, Mitchell reported.

Nov. 11 – Jill Kelley and her husband, Scott, issue statement: "We and our family have been friends with Gen. Petraeus and his family for over five years. We respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children."

Afghanistan military commander Gen. John Allen investigated for 'inappropriate' emails

FBI agents carry boxes and a computer from the home of Paula Broadwell in Charlotte, N.C.

Nov. 12 – In a surprise statement during a trip to Australia, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announces that U.S. General John Allen, who succeeded Petraeus as military commander in Afghanistan, is under investigation over allegations he exchanged “inappropriate” emails with Kelley, the woman who triggered the investigation of Petraeus. Meanwhile, FBI agents carry out a four-hour “consensual search” of Broadwell’s home in Charlotte, N.C., leaving with eight to 10 cardboard boxes.

25 years ago, while overseas with my military husband, I was waiting for my girlfriend to end her shift at the officer's club. Top brass was ending a closed door special meeting of some kind. While waiting, some women walked in and joined the top brass at the bar where I was. I stated to my friend's manager "Wow! These guys have beautiful wives!" "They aren't their wives!" he states to me. "They are hookers brought in to entertain them". Foreign hookers, overseas, entertaining our both married and single officers. Wake up America. This is the norm. Not the exception. And it is allowed. He$$, it is encouraged.

The Tampa military sex worker network is working overtime.

These women let the cat out of the bag.

The whole thing is crumbling at the feet of Central Command in Tampa.

That's an interesting tale, Ana - one problem. Patraeus retired from the military. As head of the CIA he's held to a different code. Not because somebody might see him in a bar with a chick - or upset his wife. Because when the CIA let down their guard, people die.

General Petraeus did not betray the U. S. people, he betrayed his wife. That's bad enough, but in no way does it mean we should lose a great leader when we have so few.

Petraeus was no longer in the military, therefore, an affair is not a crime.

How did the CIA jump from investigating threatening emails between two women to looking at all of Petraeus's emails, and then Allen's.

Why can't you identify the FBI agent that sent the shirtless photo?

There are more questions coming for sure.

In my humble opinion, you are wrong. Unless of course you believe the Director, CIA is above the security requirements of the employees he directs. An illicit affair is enough to get our Top Secret security clearance pulled...which is enough to lose your job over. The Director's job should be no different.

If you're going to make an exception in his case, you have to go back to every "wrongful firing" case involving the lose of a security clearance for the same "non-offense".

It really upsets me the attention the press is giving to the David Petraeus affair. Give the guy a break, he's a good man that made a mistake and clearly admitted his wrongdoing. Enough said, he who has not sinned should throw the first stone. Give the man some peace!

      #1.15 - Tue Nov 13, 2012 4:13 PM EST

WHile Petreus did not break the law by having the affair after he got out of he Army, the fact of the affair is a security issue. Sort of along the lines of having a secret, having the secret found out by an 'enemy' of the US and being blackmailed over it. (this was the logic of denying gays security clearances in the 60's and 70's).

Its funny the day after reelecting the most transparent pres in history, we find out Iran just tried the day before election to shoot one of our drone's down over International waters (AN ACT OF WAR PEOPLE) and not even a verbal warning to Iran, how they have been able to keep death of American Ambassador, and three other americans swept under the rug. And now Betrayus (as The left pointed out in full page ad in NY times before surge in Iraq) we all now know he LIED to congress as head of CIA due to what FBI, and the Whitehouse were holding over his head. The administration is busted if the full details of this come to light.

This was not news . Patraeus did not risk a security threat of any kind . That is bull . What I wonder is if that is the case , maybe if you are head of the CIA maybe you should not be married , and live in quarantine away from society . Because you could still tell your wife classified things and she share them with her friends . Same with kids . Maybe you shouldn't be allowed to be around anyone but classified people. This entire story is bull .

I'm just a bit curious about the fact that no one told the Chief Executive about his CIA Directors issues. Holder and the FBI director knew weeks ago. Either there's an effort to give Obama "plausible deniability", or this administration is incredibly inept.

I don't think Petraeus's wife cared a bit about the long term affair. When it is found out, it brings humilation and embarassment to the family----It is another type of "Outing".

Most wives know their husbands who have dalliances are attracted to younger more beautiful women, turning their thoughts the other way. Mrs. Petraeus looks like she is far from being connected to her husband. Observation.

Mrs. Petraeus has an important Job with the Obama Administration. She has her own career. Who Cares?--it is the children who are damaged.

This is one big quadrangle, including the FBI agent. It is a little Social Network between all the parties, and the women began to "fight" over their men.

A true Disgrace to the CIA, The Military. Where's our Commander in Chief on this matter? Eric Holder knew, and so did Obama---

The American Public definitely are not fools when it comes to real life. It happens all the time, except that this one may have taken away attention from the Libyan Attacks, Investigations, thus all "sleeping on the job". 4 people dead and no one really cares about their loss of life--Disgusting.

Apparently it has already been indicated that Petraeus' mistress had info she should not have had. Who cares? EVERYONE should care. Get your head out of the sand and think for a few seconds. This kind of behavior is very dangerous....especially when it involves men of high rank like the Director CIA and 3 Star Generals. Nevertheless.....we should not let any of this distract us from the more important issue of the moment....who was responsible for leaving those 4 men to die at Benghazi?

Sorry for bringing this up, but what about the women in all of these affairs?

Yes. The males are to be tarred and feathered for a betrayal of marital vows,...I fully agree, but what f the "other" woman?

Why is it that in every one of these affairs the women in these illicit relationships skate away relatively scott free? No pun intended.

The pattern is totally familiar by now:

          1. Powerful/rich married man meets younger hot tottie female
          2. Younger hot tottie has a talent for spotting and targeting vulnerable wealthy men
          3. Powerful/rich married man has sex with younger hot tottie female
          4. Powerful/rich married man gets caught having affair and gets drummed out of office/job/etc.... and gets blamed for infidelity
          5. Powerful/rich male gets blamed for initiating affair
          6. Powerful/rich man loses a$$ in divorce court
          7. Young hot tottie writes tell-all book about how "victimized" and deceived she was
          8. Young hot tottie cashes in major pay day for destroying lives
          9. Young hot tottie poses for Playboy/Penthouse/Hustler magazine for s'more loot

Seriously, how many times do we have to see this movie? When will these supposedly wise people learn? Why is it that these Gold Diggers are never seen messing around with a window washer who makes $8.00/hour?

Like the woman who went after and boinked Edwards. Textbook case. Look:

She knew Edwards was married, and the trollop went after him anyway even though his wife was going through cancer, so she doesn't get any morality points for doing him either. Then she goes on an interview with Barbara Walters or somebody and piously coos what a starstruck little tragedy figure she is, and how it has wrecked her life and her baby's life.

Yeah? You probably weren't thinking of that while you were bouncing up and down shuggah!! Probably not when you were spitting it out either!!

Next time any of you sees one of these tootsies on the tube pontificating what a victim they are; fill your head with the visuals I just presented, and try to feel sorry for them THEN. You think that video of them boinking a married man would make their daddies proud?

Next time you hear of the next extra-marital affair and are tempted to heap too much scorn on the male, try assigning at least a little bit of blame to the female part of the equation.

These predators know only too fully well EXACTLY what the hell they are doing, and who they are doing. Eyes (and legs) WIIIIIIDE open.

          Trust me.

How can you blame the guy. Look at his wife of 38 years that looks like she could play the part of his mother better than his wife. Now look at the psycho that he was boinkin. What guy wouldn't make a play for the hottie that throws her butt in front of him when he has a shot at this, or going home to the same ol'.............

Tell me, percentage-wise, how many guys in the military under the same conditions would not 'hit it' ?

If only we could get so outraged by violence. Think for a moment how many beatings, war scenes, killings your KIDS (and you for that matter) have seen on television by the time they graduate from senior high? On television violence is 'ok' unlike sexual themes which are so feared they are banned.

So in this situation here - we've been conditioned to accept violence and react to sexual scandal with horror and amazement. It's smoke and mirrors people. We're expressing shock and awe at sex and turning a blind eye to the violence of war and the violence within ourselves.

So the war mongers, makers and sellers and suppliers of kinning weapons for armed forces sit back and the money rolls in. All the while we the common people fixate on some guy humping some girl. Whoopie dang do. I could not care less about it.

Seems a shame that older men with money or power seek a return to their youth via younger women. There has never been a shortage of younger women more than willing to spread their legs for a chance at that money or power throughout history. Just ask Clinton, McCain and Gingrich. Quick quiz. Which one of the three patched things up with his wife and remains at her side instead of dumping her for a trophy wife?

The good General came clean and refused to become hostage to political blackmail. Regardless of our moral or political views, the man has always been faithful to his country. His adulterous affair is now a personal issue between the General and his wife. He has paid an extremely high price for this horrible mistake. Other than testimony to clarify the parts played by those behind the scenes, the General should be allowed to return to his private life.

I said this once and I say it again to the Obama haters that persist in pushing the Libyan tragedy:

The faithful will be beating the Benghazi drums for years to come. They view the attack as a wonderful gift to them. The prize at the bottom of the Cracker Jack box. President Obama's Waterloo. Romney's ticket to the White-house.

They feel cheated that Romney's underhanded attempt to capitalize on an American tragedy proved fruitless and even damaging. These cold-hearted people care nothing for the victims and families except as pawns to further their favored political agenda.

I'm wondering if Paula Broadwell's version of events in Benghazi might not be worth further exploration. She mentioned in some recent talk that the reason behind the Benghazi attack was that the CIA was secretly ( illegally?) holding some prisoners at the embassy and that the attack was intended to free them. It's been reported that that story hadn't been carried by any news organization anywhere prior to Broadwell telling it, so where did she come up with that information? It's hard to imagine a motive for inventing that story, and since she had access to CIA bigwigs it's not inconceivable that her source was reliable. Her version of events would explain 2 things: 1. Why the attack happened and 2. why the CIA was having such a tough time getting their story straight. I'm not asserting that what she said should be automatically taken as truth, but I think it's worth investigating.

Although Benghazi is horrible, the fact remains that U.S. missions overseas are dangerous places. There have been 17 attacks since 1964 on missions, and many have been much worse than this.

As for our high ranking public figures, they have to be held to a higher standard, and if they can prove that Patraeus had the affair as an active General, then he can be charged under the UCMJ and Court Marshall proceedings are warranted. The same thing applies to John Allen.

People talking about Clinton don't have the slightest clue as to the agreement that the prosecutors had with Clinton. They all agreed before any hearings, that oral sex would NOT be considered as being called "sex". The republicans on the committee agreed to that understanding without a fight. To go ahead and say now, that he DID have sexual relations, is in violation of that agreement.

To you, me, and everyone else, a BJ IS having sexual relations, but to the investigating committee, it meant that Clinton did NOT lie when he said no to having a sexual relationship. Semantics sure, but that is what both sides agreed to call it.

This entire issue, like both Clinton and Benghazi, are little more than DC politics at their worst. Though the deaths in Benghazi were not the norm, both the lack of security and the followup response to the attack ARE the norm. Look at almost any other embassy or consulate and you will see almost identical requests for additional security, and the glaring lack of response to those concerns, for the better part of the last 30-40 years. People are letting their partisanship and their fears and self righteousness get in the way of looking at the evidence with a critical mind.

Sex and politics go hand in hand back to ancient history. For all anyone knows, Petraeus had an open marriage, and it is only in the scream of publicity that this is being made into a catastrophe. He had nothing to hide if his infidelities were known to his wife, so there would be little benefit of anyone trying to blackmail him. Let events play out and investigations be completed before anyone starts demanding heads and laying blame on others. Partisanship over intelligence only shows how foolish the haters and holier than thou types truly are.

                        Sir,

Your comments, while very articulate, marginalize what happened in Benghazi. Four americans are dead, and it wasn't a sexual affair that got them killed. Instead, it was a total breakdown of security and lack of oversight by CIA and the State dept. led by Secretary of state Clinton. While I agree on letting the chips fall with an investigation, I feel that it was delayed due to the election, thereby allowing the current administration to carry on their political agendas, instead of performing their sworn duties.

I really don't think infidelity should have any bearing on a person's job. If they are good at what they do who cares about their sex life. Granted its crappy to cheat on your significant other but it shouldn't ruin your life and career. We need to lose this 1950's mentality for real.

                              @Shellie-657180 unfortunately, @NewMalthus has a good point.

You'd think US soil being torched and fellow citizens killed on a 9/11 anniversary would be reported more diligently than some sordid love affair that no one really cares about.

Your attempt to discredit criticism of how Benghazi was handled through a very flaky ad-hominem attack has been noted.

And where was the criticism from people like you guys for how Bush handled all of the intelligence information that indicated Bin Laden was going to attack the US. You know how he IGNORED ALL OF IT and then we got 9/11. I doubt if any of you guys were screaming about how they screwed up and then attempted to cover it up by shifting blame to Iraq. Then got us in a war there through lies and deception and none of you complained about it. Over 3,000 dead in the towers though NEGLIGENCE BY BUSH and over 4,000 dead in Iraq though LIES BY BUSH and you guys never bitched but you are bitching about 4 dead in Libya.

4 Americans died after repeated calls for help were denied.

DCIA was involved in a messy affair.

Both of these are important issues.....contrary to what some would prefer.

@ Sandy, That is the truth. Nobody was acting a fool when Bush was in office and acted with negligence in 9/11 and sent America to war with Iraq over over a lie and as a results millions of people lost their lives. It is amazing to see how all of these people get all up in the air over four people being dead in Benghazi just because we have a black President. When I remember a similar report surfacing when Bush was in office and he had started the war in Afghanistan and his administration had denied a similar request also. Only differnce is it was from the military. And Bush had denied that request. And nobody hardly said two cents about it. But now since President Obama is in office people want to throw a temper tantrum.

I mean its like if he does anything wrong people are just ready to overthrow him and his administration. But I wonder if it was a White President instead and he had been in charge would they still be acting and having a heart attack about Benghazi. Or if it had been a Republican president would people be lashing out and throwing a temper tantrum like they are now. Hmm I really wonder.

And to other poster who replied to your comment and stated: " Okay, Obama is just as bad as bush." "Do you feel better now?" Bush is and was much worse than President Obama. The heinious crimes that Bush committed against America are a whole lot worse than President Obama's negligence. You cant even compare. Hell, Bush was much worse. It is a fact. As a matter of fact, Bush is and was the worst president ever in America. Studies and statistics have provided these facts on numerous occassions. So actually, President Obama is a much better president than President George W. Bush. I cannot believe she actually had the nerve to compare Obama to Bush. What she should have said was Bush was worse than Obama. Feel better now? Because in no way are they equal to each other.

Now to the story. I knew, like most of the posters on here, that when he first resigned he was doing so to get out of testifying or trying to cover up a scandal. I'll be honest and admit that. Like I said when it first broke, this man aint just all of sudden came clean and admitted he was having affair just to clear his conscience and to be in good standing, He did it so he wouldn't have to testify and also because he was being blackmailed and also because he didn't want to get fired for compromising confidential information.Hedidn't wan the dirty details to come out after then so he figured he'd do them one better and resign ahead of time and confess all at the same time to spare himself the humiliation. Thats all that was. And second like I have already stated, to avoid testifying about Benghazi. And he still should be made to testify before Congress.

Just because he resigned should not give him clearnce from the trial. He should be questioned and held accoutnable if he committed any crimes or violated any security policy the CIA had in place. I do agree with that. The White House did get their information from the CIA. And if he missreported anything as a result of having this affair theny they should hold him accountable. Only If a crime was comitted. If a crime was not comitted and he didn't comprise any security information and he didn't put anybody in any danger then they should let him off and the media should step off and leave him alone. Because it really is no one of our business and I for one could honestly care less. Just my thoughts. Thats all.

He seems to care more about hurting the Terrorists feelings,we don't trust him because he lies lies lies and I wouldn't B surprised to find he had a dalliance with one of these Tramps.

They can still supoena General Petraeus even though he is no longer head of the CIA. The fact that there are two generals involved and the both have in common that woman in Florida, is very suspicious. I wonder if it is not a case of mistresses being jealous of one another, and bringing down the men with whom they cheat.

NBC's "time line", thanks for nothing by the way, creates more questions than gives answers. Two generals, banging some "megalomaniac groupies" does not make a case for ones resignation as head of the CIA. The CIA is clandestinely on steroids, they kill people "just because" and you expect us to believe the fall of CIA director lies in the hands of these two bimbos?? Please.

What a crock of doo doo, plainyjainie. Petraeus's literal screw up has nothing to do with the Obama administration's issues. If Petraeus had kept his eye on the ball instead of feeling his balls, maybe he would have seen the tainted information being passed from his office to the White House. This was another case of Fatal Attraction. He latched onto a crazy B and was too bus keeping her at bay to properly and professionally do his job. He's no better than Tiger Woods.

Late Summer - Attorney General Eric Holder is told that agents have discovered an email link between Petraeus and Broadwell.

Nov. 6 – Justice Department informs Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Nov. 7 – Clapper informs the White House.

I'm calling BS on this one.

Let's see, the the heads of the Department of Justice (Eric Holder) and the FBI (Clapper) are investigating the head of the CIA (Petraeus) for months and somehow, someway--even though all three report DIRECTLY to Mr. Obama--Mr. Obama is magically kept out of the loop until the day after the election?

Only the most hyper-partisan Democrats could possibly be blind enough to believe this.

and so what if Obama knew, what does that mean? nothing, Patreaus had an affair, doesnt affect Obama, in fact all this info coming out after the election (if thats what you say Obama wanted) actually hurts Obama due to all you crazies on the right with your conspiracies. this has nothing to do with Bengazi, only that Patreaus was a horny old man who couldnt keep it in his pants and this doesnt keep him from testifying. it could also be that since the FBI and Justice could not find anything other than an affair they felt why tell Obama at that time since he had a couple of other things on his mind (like kicking Romneys butt)

                                                @maninfla1...

I think you proved my point about hyper-partisan Democrats being blind. Did you read what you wrote?

"in fact all this info coming out after the election...actually hurts Obama"

Er, um, suppose this came out before the election the election? Wouldn't have actually hurt Obama, too?

You add to this all of the out-and-out lies being told by this Administration about the chain of events with the terrorist attack at the US Embassy in Bengazi ("it's the video"/"it's not the video", "it was spontaneous"/"it wasn't spontaneous", "it's a floorwax"/"it's a dessert topping"...)

...and it's really beginning to stink. When you start having rock-solid Democrats like Senator Dianne Feinstein calling for investigations, it's time to think about taking the partisan blinders off.

I don't think a person's morals make any difference as to whether they can effectively serve in the U.S. military as a general. I believe the only qualification is that if Israel orders the president to bomb Iran (or anyone else) you do it - no questions asked.

And if she does it is her right to do so. And i SUPPORT WOMEN HAVING THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE. Hell, men do as they please. And women should be allowed to do as they please. I support women having reproductive rights or "ABORTION RIGHTS" as you call it. Hell, you don't have to carry the baby and you don't have to deliver it, so you have no say say in this. And yes a woman has all the say so and should have all the say so. You are damn skippy. There is nothing wrong with being a feminist. If men can be male chauvinists then women definitely can be feminists. Thank you.

Now, women do commit adultery too. And yes women misbehave also. But she has every right to voice her opinion as do you. Women and men do have equal rights in this country. And both has the freedom and right to speak their mind.

It's obvious you have never worked in the DoD or had any kind of security clearance. When you have access to classified information, every aspect of your life has to do with your job.

Any moral or legal violations of any kind will usually prevent you from obtaining the proper clearance to get the job, and any violations while employed are cause for termination. That includes adultery. Petraeus was vulnerable to blackmail and any number of things. He'll be lucky if he doesn't face felony charges as well. If people want to have a right to privacy, they should not attempt to get clearances.

Steve, you are correct. I recall that when I was being investigated for my Top Secret Clearance all aspects of my personal life were examined as well as my financial situation. The general put himself in a vulnerable position and only offered to resign after the FBI started investigating.

Although I'm shouldn't be surprised at some of the moronic posts by some of you right wingers, I still wonder about your thinking processes - one clown suggested that the good general "saved our country" and so it should be okay for him to have a little tail on the side. Some suggested that Obama is somehow behind the whole thing, as if he coerced Paula and David to write those emails. And to suggest that Obama is rying to purge the upper rnaks of the military - well, I guess there will always be conspirracy theorists.

This will eventually resolve itself - the good general will fade into obscurity - perhaps will become the CEO of some company; Paula will likewise fade away, not unlike Monica.
