As their secret dissolved, Petraeus, Broadwell chatted at awards dinner

James Brantley

Multiple sources tell NBC News the woman with her back to the camera in the top photo is Paula Broadwell. She is pictured at a reception prior to the annual OSS Society awards dinner in Washington on Oct. 27, speaking to a man who is nearly obscured in the photo. The photographer and a senior U.S. intelligence official tell NBC News that the man is Gen. David Petraeus, also attended the event. The photo below, taken approximately a minute later, shows Petraeus speaking to one of the unidentified guests in the first photo.

Two weeks before his resignation as CIA Director, David Petraeus and his biographer, Paula Broadwell, met at an event honoring one of Petraeus' predecessors, NBC News has learned. It is the last known meeting between the two before the scandal that cost Petraeus his job went public and occurred after Broadwell had admitted to the FBI the two had an extramarital affair, according to multiple government and law enforcement officials.

One senior U.S. intelligence official who attended the event – the annual Office of Strategic Services Society awards dinner -- tells NBC News that he saw the two speak to each other at the Oct. 27 event. The official did not know details of the conversation.

And photographer James Brantley, who worked the event, said he is certain the two spoke, based on the photos above, which he estimated were taken about a minute apart. The first shows Broadwell speaking to a man who is nearly obscured in the photo, as two unidentified guests look on. The second, taken from a different position, clearly shows Petraeus speaking to one of the other guests from the first photo.

The duo’s presence at the same event was first reported by the conservative weekly Human Events, which said they attended together. But numerous partygoers interviewed by NBC News disputed that.

Still, their public proximity raised eyebrows after the events of last week unfolded.

Said one former senior U.S. intelligence official who attended, “It’s mind-boggling that she could be so reckless as to show up at high-profile events like this, shortly after learning the FBI was investigating their affair.”

Charles T. Plinck, director of the OSS Society, did not return phone calls seeking comment from NBC News.

Email to Gen. Allen among those Kelley gave to FBI

The event came more than a month after Broadwell was first interviewed by the FBI following discovery of compromising emails that ultimately led to Petraeus' resignation on Nov. 9.  Days after the event, the FBI would interview Petraeus for the first time and Broadwell for a second time. The event also occurred about four months after the two reportedly broke off their 10-month affair.

Meet the people who have been pulled into the scandal that caused Gen. David Petraeus to resign.

The dinner is the annual award ceremony of the OSS Society, a group dedicated to honoring veterans of the Office of Strategic Services, the World War II predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency. Petraeus, who sources described as being in a "great mood" that night, gave one of the speeches honoring former CIA director and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, the recipient of this year's William Donovan Award, named for the director of the OSS.

The dinner is one of the intelligence community's most high-profile events. It attracts top U.S. and international intelligence officials, former directors of the CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies.  In addition to Petraeus and Gates, others who attended included John Bennett, director of the CIA’s National Clandestine Service; William Webster, former head of both the CIA and FBI; Adm. Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Ambassador Hugh Montgomery, former director of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research.

Passion or lust is a very overpowering emotion.

IF these two had a sensational sex relationship it must have been difficult for each of them to 'return' to their respective spouses ?

The only question to be asked is why ???

This woman needs to be at home with her children. I feel so bad for her kids.

Instead she is too busy wearing revealing clothes as if she is starring in the next "The Real Housewives of the Pentagon". I mean really, couldn't she have worn something more appropriate.

There is no more honor & respect. What a laughing stock America has become.

These women had one thing in common. The need for attention and the knowledge what the thing between their legs can do. It's called working it and they seem to be fighting over who works it the best. If this seems to be a problem for anyone to the point they can't do their job or they think wasting tax payer money by wiping a dead horse is something that needs to happen needs to be fired. Now is not the time to be wasting my money or your time! Eric Cantor and John McCain need to find a job on Days of Our Lives.

    @ Confussed

John McCain is doing the right thing. The terrorist attack at Benghazi and the fiasco between Petreaus and Broadwell are two different things.

At Benghazi four people were murdered and so far the administration and the separate branches have given different versions on what happened. This should make every American nervous.

It's like investigating a family murder. The father and the mother give different versions. The investigators have to find out the truth. In the States every murder needs to be solved and keep trying if it can't be solved.

Why should the Benghazi attack be any different? The government wants to make this go away. The American people should not allow this to go away. The government needs to explain what happened.

You think things are so simple. Something happens in the world and the president should have an explanation and answer immediately. Have you ever considered in the real world people give accounts, hopefully, based on their knowledge. Different people have different known facts. You are for sure the last one to get those facts, but that doesn't stop you from giving your "facts" based on your knowledge.

The problem is we want to know everything immediately and people try to explain the best they can, immediately. They should wait for all the facts to come in but we won't.

Look at the Bush II administration's answer for 9-11! Some people still think Sadam Huessien bombed the US.

    @ Dick,

The Bush administration's answer for 9/11 was the Afghanistan war and rightfully so. Sadly Al Qaeda are like cockroaches. They are all in one place and once you spray them they spread everywhere.

Obama blamed the murders on a youtube video. Sorry, but "spontaneous protesters" don't show up with AK-47's and carrying enough ammunition to last over 5 hours.

If this attack was a 15 minute deal then I could understand but this took over 5 hours. What in the hell was the American government doing? Eating cookies & milk?

Guess where the maker of the youtube video is? He is in a US prison on a probation charge. Where are the terrorists who killed our US Ambassador and three Navy Seals?

Obama insinuated that McCain is avoiding him. And he does it when all the cameras are on him acting tough. The truth is Obama has been avoiding McCain.

It's been over two months and the WH, the State Dept., the Justice Dept., the Defense dept. are all saying different stories.

I don't understand how some Americans can just sit back and allow this cover-up to happen.

I agree, just stay together and leave your spouses. It would probably be harder for Broadwell since she has little ones.

Bottom line, this is nobody's business. Sure everyone is entitled to an opinion but the FBI determined that no confidential material was exposed, so lets move on! I think people are more shocked that Petraeous was able to grab the attention of an attractive woman (even if he is 60ish...mofo has moves like Jagger LOL)

The one person that I REALLY feel sorry for is Mrs. Petraeous. The above picture of the two is all over th media all day and night. The woman thought this slut was her friend and also the Jill Kelley. She had these sluts in her home for the holidays. These were power seeking attention needing narcisissts.

My question is why did Broadwell want the secret/classified documents in her home? What was she going to do with them?

The BIG IMPORTANT questiion in all of this is who knew what and when on 9/11? Where was the president and who called the shots? Who was in the Situation Room? Were the president, Biden, and Hiliary really monitoring this whole even from the Oval Office and what did THEY really do to save the 4 men from being murdered by terrorists?

WHO started the video story and why? Did Rice know the truth when she told the story of the video on 5 programs 5 days later? The president said yesterday that she was SENT BY THE WHITE HOUSE to the TV programs with informatiion GIVEN TO HER BY THE WHITE HOUSE. Why did the white house lie to her?

Only a man would say that. Women are canny enough to know precisely what move Broadwell was making in the game she was playing.

As for being home with her children, wrong. Those children need to be kept away from this harpy. They are far better off in the care of a competent, caring nanny. The real question is, why did she have children?

@Jo-Ann: McCain is proving to be as irrelevant in the Senate as he was in the last 2 presidential elections. His comments are ridiculous and unfounded. It's pretty sad to watch his petty vendetta against Obama play out as a capstone to his political career. I'm sure that's not the way he wanted to be remembered, but unfortunately, he seems unable or unwilling to stop himself and act responsibly.

This psycho bitch (Broadwell) had a public affair with the head of the CIA, had personal possession of classified information, created anonymous email accounts to harass family friends and colleagues, used information that should NOT have been common knowledge in the harassing emails. And then some are surprised that she would be so reckless as to attend a certain social function?

      @Jo Ann-666954..

McCain & Lindsey Grahamare lying, hypocritical SORE LOOOOOOSERS!!!

Where was McCain's outrage (and yours) when Condoleezza Rice was Secretary of State to George Bush when 9/11 & the BIG WMD LIE happened in Iraq?

On Wednesday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) promised to filibuster Rice's nomination and "do whatever to block the nomination that is within our power." "She's not qualified," McCain explained, arguing that she misled the public by initially attributing the September 11 Benghazi attack to protests over an anti-Islam video. He claimed that at a minimum, Rice is guilty of "not being very bright, because it was obvious that this was not a 'flash mob' and there was additional information by the time she went on every news show…in America."

But interestingly, McCain took a far different approach to another Rice in 2005. When President George W. Bush nominated National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice to the post, McCain defended the nomination, despite Rice's central role in spreading the false intelligence that Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction. The Democrats held hours of hearing and ultimately confirmed Rice, but not before McCain accused the opposition of using politics to delay her confirmation and challenging her "integrity":

McCAIN: Condoleezza Rice is a great American success story. This is what America is all about. A young woman who grew up in a segregated part of America where Americans were not treated equally, to rise to the position of secretary of state. We should have been celebrating, I believe, this remarkable American success story.

Also, I thought that some of the remarks — and I'm not going to mention my colleagues' names — some of the remarks aimed at her during the hearings challenged her integrity. We can disagree on policy and we disagree on a lot of things, but I think it is very clear that Condoleezza Rice is a person of integrity. And yes, I see this, some lingering bitterness over a very tough campaign. I hope it dissipates soon.

"I can only conclude we're doing this for no other reason than because of lingering bitterness at the outcome of the elections," McCain told CBS Morning News on January 27, 2005..

BuzzFeed's Zeke Miller notes that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-NC), who is also opposing Susan Rice, backed Condoleezza. "Every intelligence agency in the world was misled. And to connect those two to say that she's a liar is very unfair, over the line."

This real life dinner photo reminds me of that old Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman,Sean Young movie,

                  No Way Out.

Gene Hackman played a married Defense Secretary Brice and Sean Young was his mistress. Brice had her come separately to all the Washington fancy dinners and parties because he liked to see her all dressed up, even if he couldn't talk to her.

Plot revolves around the secret love triangle between the three leads. Costner was Lt. Commander Tom Farrell assigned to investigate the suspected KGB mole in the Pentagon. No spoilers about who the mole is. Go rent and find out. Good 80's cold war era movie.

                  Thanks you guys.

Thanks CoCo. I thought of "loss of sense of reality", but "delusional" seemed more reality-based.

Folks could say "whack-o, "koo-koo" and "woo-woo", but they are too clinical.

"Goofy" is too optimistic, and lends a drop of humor to a situation too grim and un-funny to articulate.

Take it from here, Dr. Freud.

just taking a guess, but I recall reading when she was active duty military, she was an intelligence officer. (Not going to touch THAT one) So this event was thrown by a Society, and she could have well been on a mailing list that went out months ago.

But Im with you, I want to go as well.

actually, maybe not at all. Could be the guys will be fine but the women will be the ones looking bad. The one in Florida seems an open case for fraud and tax evasion, not to mention bribes. The other in DC, will likely end up a single mom fighting for the right to see her boys. Just guessing. Military pension ? she has to keep denying anything happened between she and Petreus while they were in the military. Whatever...and good luck ! maybe the book will fly off the shelves....I doubt.

I will say it again men have 2 heads and it is the one between their legs that thinks and controls their main controls in their actions when it comes down to women. These 2 women are nothing but married whores, and I feel sorry for Broadwell's children who will have to go through life with everyone knowing that their mother is a slut in the most extreme manner. The little boys' father should divorce her and so the little ones can find some normal life later on down the road but as long as the mother is in the picture this sure will not happen.

Interesting letter to some ethicist at the NYT this past summer, about a husband knowing his wife was having an affair with a high-ranking government official, but considering willing to go along with it because of the "greater" good of the work being done. Really kind of pathetic. Speculation is that the writer is Dr. Broadwell.

If he can't be faithful to his wife after 38 years of marriage where he took an oath, how in the world he canbe faithful to the American Public believe anything he has to say about Bengazei. He will be under oath. This is a witch hunt by the raciest Grand Ugly Party and Tea Baggers in and effort thinking they will come up with something to implicate the President. During the election, they were so concerned about jobs (which was a lie) thinking that would help mormon Mitt get elected. These are some raciest good old prejudice boys who can't take seeing a black family in the White House. Get over it you idiots, you may have a chance to retain the House in 2014 but for sure you will give it up and the White House in 2016 to no other than Hillary.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-NC), who is also opposing Susan Rice, backed Condoleezza. "[E]very intelligence agency in the world was misled. And to connect those two to say that she's a liar is very unfair, over the line."

That is a joke when a real ambassador died for lack of protection. And the Broadwell broad needs to exit the military, Washington. and change her name. She could be her own ghost writer. And no matter how the 2 generals appear to be as intelligent military genius. Whenever a man uses his privates to think, it is trouble with a capital "T". This administration and it's controlled media has ramped up its non stop coverage of every detail in the Petraeus affair. Their paparazzi type tabloid coverage is amazingly follywood styled while very little was covered and almost no attention questions the Benghazi Failure had raised.

Obamas adminsitration's strategy of attack, distract and discredit using Petraeus and Allen to no end reveals their uneasiness of Petraeus's volunteering to testify in todays Senate Hearing. Here's hoping Petraeus drops the hammer and uncovers this nasty cover up of a national security disaster that has been going on for too long.

Seems ridiculous how people swallow the media story whole, and jump to the attack. Patraeus and Broadwell have a lifetime of service to their country and what they did in their private lives should be nobodies business, certainly not the FBI. They both are part of the inner circle of people fighting terrorists and intelligence professionals, and hardly any sort of security risks.

With the affair that ended months ago revealed, maybe he is now free to tell all to congress.

hardly any sort of security risks.

I certainly hope you're not, nor get, connected to our military, CIA or FBI with that perspective! You don't have the insight on how interpersonal relations complicate human behavior. But if you think you can change all of human behavior to your perspective, well, good luck!

Actually Broadwell is a security risk having volumes of classified papers in her home.

Too much stuff is classified anyway...The REALLY important classified stuff gets leaked by members of Congress right away...

Huh? You clearly know nothing about the CIA or the Army. Broadwell has shown herself to be unstable and loopy. The fact that she had classified documents in her possession was dangerous. As she was already sending threatening letters to another woman, who knows how far she could have gone had this affair not come to light?

Please spare us your lecture about this affair not being our business. It is our business. The CIA is a spy agency. You clearly need to educate yourself about the CIA.

What are all those men in the photo looking at? Could it be the tall woman wearing next to nothing? Look, the men are wearing underwear, undershirt, shirt, pants, sock, shoes, and over coat, with ties. She is almost naked. To wear something as scanty as that to a dignified affair is evidence of a need to be seen and admired. I got that impression when I saw her on the Daily Show. She is dressed more for an outdoor pool party. It seems to speak volumes about her. Add to that the fact that she engaged in some sort of a hen fight with another woman of questionable taste, and it just gets so tabloidesque.

I just don't know how his wife could forgive him for what he has done to himself, his honor, his family, and her. Most men are rat finks when it comes to fidelity. But, most don't have so much to lose, for themselves and for others. Apparently, having this type of relationship is against some military code of honor. What a shame, after his long career!

This seems a good argument for having more women in positions of real power. Women are rarely subject to this type of indiscretion. Men are always vulnerable---just look at those guys in the photo.

I confident that it won’t matter which of the genders is in what situation. Sexual behavior is part of our DNA. I’m not going to post an in depth analyses. It’s just that sex is basic animal behavior to promote the longevity of species. Alpha individuals (male or female) are “most likely” to obtain positions of power, and attraction and conquest of the opposite sex is a validation of that.

Hanne, I agree that men are probably more prone to be involved in something like this, but it's not like all women are innocent either. This could have happened to a woman just as easily. The difference might be that women tend to be attracted to the position (the power) whereas men might just be attracted to the physical beauty of the woman.

There is physical power, and there is intellectual power, (positions of power) they are both attractive to the opposite sex.

Probably a little truth to that. But just think, you see some good looking women with some ugly dudes, but you don't see too many good looking guys with ugly women. I think women are more likely to be attracted to things other than the physical.

Rational thinking would say that human beings should put in check those animal drives and moderate their behavior in those matters of bodily pleasure as these appeal at most to the base instincts of humans! That was Aristotle´s thinking thousands of years ago, then, the gentleman saw what stops us from living a virtuous life! It was the Ego and the animal instinct in us then and it is now! It is about human nature!

I am sick of reading about these married hos social climbers. The only one that I feel sorry is the woman that was married to this man for 38 years. These are jealous vindictive social climbers, that the husbands apparently have no b*** or maybe they enjoy watching. You have over 10,000 emails between General Allen and Jill (other ho) in Tampa, and how many e-mails from the Head of the CIA P. I am concerned about the tax dollars and benefits to these jerks, that they have time to stay on a computer and produce e-mails and are more concerned with social climbing hoes.

High-ranking military wives are generally known as hell on wheels. I've only met one, and she certainly reinforced the stereotype: condescending, entitled, and unreasonable-cubed. Without ever having met either of the betrayed parties, my sympathies are with Dr Broadwell and the two young sons. I'm betting Holly will not only roll with the punches, but land a few herself..

The only reason this is news is that Gen. Petraeus is so widely respected, and so highly placed within one of America's most secretive organizations. His actions while totally human, are clearly a security risk given his high profile, so clearly the best decision was done in the interests of all parties, that Gen. Petraeus resigns from his post.

My heart goes out to Mrs. Petraeus, and the agony and humiliation she must be feeling now.
My heart also goes out to the husband and children of Mrs. Broadwell, who have now become the victims of Paula's selfish passion.

That said, as long as there has been no national security breach from their relationship, if Petraeus and Mrs. Broadwell decide to continue their relationship, it is absolutely none of the publics business, and we should stay out of their lives.

Afterall, this is still America, and people should be free to be with whom they wish, even if we dont agree.

This is just the typical soap opera scenario of a woman that wants as much attention as she can get no matter how she gets it, even at the expense of her husband, her children, and Holly Petraeus and family. I find this sickening that a man would even do this without giving any thought to the consequences. I hope this is a rude awakening for her and a hard slap in the face. Probably will not be the case tho.

She goes to these parties dressed to kill with clothes that are not appropriate for the kind of events she attended. What does that tell you? If you have the desire to have lots of male attention dress sexy and they will oogle all over you (some men). Her husband must be so humiliated as is Holly.
