As Vice President Joe Biden prepares to present sweeping gun control proposals, residents of Newtown are speaking out. Meanwhile, investigators continue to examine what triggered Adam Lanza's rage. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.
NEWTOWN, Conn. – Police Chief Michael Kehoe has a message for the White House: “Ban assault weapons, restrict those magazines that have so many bullets in them, shore up any loopholes in our criminal background checks,” he said in an exclusive interview with NBC News.
As Vice President Joe Biden prepares to present his gun violence proposals to the White House this week, the residents of Newtown — including first responders and some families of the victims — are speaking out on gun policy for the first time.
Few have a more personal connection to the issue than Kehoe: He was one of the first on the scene at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 after reports came in of a shooting. He says he’s still haunted by flashbacks of what he witnessed when he entered the school from the rear -- the eerie silence in the hallways, the smell of burnt gunpowder and then the bodies of dead children on the floor of the classrooms.
“I was sickened. I was angry,” he said. “It was something I never could have imagined could have happened in any school in Newtown.”
But as a veteran law enforcement officer, what was most striking to Kehoe was that the gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, had heavier firepower than Kehoe and his officers. The police had Glock pistols with 14-round magazines; Lanza had a Bushmaster assault-style rifle, two handguns and multiple 30-round magazines that allowed him to squeeze off an estimated 150 shots.
Although it’s still not clear if Lanza ever fired at responding officers — Kehoe thinks he took his own life when he heard the police sirens — the disproportionate balance in firepower bothers him.

Newtown, Conn., Police Chief Michael Kehoe at a news briefing on Jan. 2.
“We never like to think we’re going to be outgunned in any situation we’re dealing with," he said. “We do a good job of securing dynamite in our society. … (Assault rifles) are another form of dynamite. … I think they should ban them.”
Kehoe’s comments come as a new grassroots group — called Sandy Hook Promise — is planning a news conference Monday in which residents of Newtown and some of the victims’ families plan to call for a “national conversation” on gun violence, mental health and school safety. The goal: to prevent “similar tragedies from ever taking place again.”
But there is far from unanimity about what should be done about guns.
Marie-Claude Duytschaever, the grandmother of 6-year-old Noah Pozner, the youngest victim that day, said she, too, wants a ban on assault rifles.
“Noah had the right to go to school safely,” she said. “He had the right to live, to have a job and a normal life. I think that’s more important than to have a gun that can obliterate a whole room in seconds.”
Sandy Hook Promise group will not call for specific gun control measures at Monday’s press conference and a few have expressed concerns that the White House is moving too rapidly with its proposals — and without seeking input from the families of the victims of Newtown.
Vice President Joe Biden will present his task force's gun policy recommendations this week – among them, most likely, to reinstate the assault weapons ban. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.
The national headquarters of the National Shooting Sports Foundation — the trade association and lobbying arm of gun manufacturers — is just down the road from the Sandy Hook Elementary School. Its representatives met with Biden’s task force last week, and this week it will hold its annual SHOT SHOW in Las Vegas, an event at which major gun makers get to exhibit their wares.
The group didn’t respond to requests for comment. But last week it posted this statement on its website: “Semi-automatic firearms are now the most popular type of firearm in America and are used for a wide variety of legitimate sporting purposes, including hunting, small game control, target shooting and personal defense. They should not be banned.”
It is not clear whether Biden will include a ban on assault weapons in the proposals he submits this week. Any effort to ban the rapid-fire rifles in the United States is expected to face tough opposition in Congress.

Sadly the Chief of Police in Newtown has become a political tool. Less than 3% of homicides in 2011 involved a semi automatic rifle according to the FBI. Most of them were justifiable homicides involving law enforcement officers.
You Fool!, ...Maybe a ban on Automatic weapons won't affect crime overall, ...but a ban would sure as hell stop lightning fast mass killings like that in Newtown!
The police on the day of the shooting reported finding two handguns on the shooters body and an Bushmaster semi automatic rifle in his car.
dont baffel georgemc with facts
What the public buys as assault weapons are not true assault weapons but semi-automatic weapons made to look like military assault rifles in order to increase sales. The problem is not so much with the rifle as it is with the size of the magazine so banning so called assault weapons is just a feel good do nothing effort. I don't believe that rights should over shadow responsibility, I have no problem with our trained men and women who have served our country in the military having or carrying guns as long as they are not suffering from disabilities that would make them a threat. I believe the best gun control is training, testing and licensing. Once trained, tested and licensed I believe the gun owner should be able to carry their weapon at all times. I also believe there should be a certain amount of proficiency, nothing scares me more then a gun owner that has never shot a gun or even knows how to maintain it. I see far too many people that have guns that shouldn't. I have owned and carried a gun for over 30 years and have never had a problem but too many people I see with guns scare the hell out of me. That is why I believe in training, testing and licensing, we have age limits we also should have knowledge and ability limits. Unfortunately it is the few totally irresponsible gun owners and nutcases that make it bad for all the responsible gun owners. All my guns other then the one I carry are always clean, unloaded, trigger locked and in a safe, the last thing I want is someone to break into my house and shoot me with one of my own guns. The power of the people in the US is the vote not guns if we don't trust our leaders then we only have ourselves to blame by putting them in office and keeping them there. Besides anyone who thinks they can go up against the US military with their pea shooters is delusional.
If you're a responsible American, you support a ban on ALL Automatic Weapon, AND any magazine carrying more than an agreeable amount of ammo, maybe no than ten.
Automatic weapons have been banned since 1938. Welcome to the party.
First off the only way to legally obtain a automatic weapon is to get a class III FFL which is very expensive and highly restrictive. Than you have to have an extra $10,000 or so fro the gun and also pay the BATF tax and pass their background. Class III FFL's are limited mostly to the military dealers, law enforcement agencies, certain security agencies and a few collectors.
Clint, yes they indeed have been banned since the late 1930's. Is that an infringement of your "second ammendment rights" as well? In other words, it's already been established for over 70 years now that the Seoond Ammendment does not allow you to possess any firearm you desire, some are deemed too lethal for use by the public. Therefore it is simply a question of degree, not whether or not any limitations on gun ownership be considered. It's time to end the wild west mentality in this country. We are already awash in guns, which is one of the major contributing factors for the insane level of violence we experience.
Less than 3% of homicides in the U.S. are committed using an semi automatic type rifle and most of those are justifiable homicides where law enforcement was the shooter. Look it up on the Uniform Crime Report.
Well, here in Connecticut we already follow the Brady Ban on '94. This did not stop this situation. I believe largely in part because this was a crime. In fact, murder in general is a crime is it not? These are committed by criminals or people who just go bat sh!t crazy. Laws do not affect these people. Laws are carried out by the law-abiding. Laws are good, but we can not just knee jerk to this and start taking away from the law abiding, who are not the problem. Evil will always be present. Limiting a weapon or magazine to the good side, will not stop the evil side from carrying out its deed.
Georgemc,
You have confused AUTOMATIC firearms with SEMIAUTOMATIC firearms. Automatic firearms are what we provide our combat troops. They fire in the fully AUTOMATIC, burst, and semiautomatic modes.
What private citizens can legally buy in a gun store is a SEMIAUTOMATIC firearm. It fires one cartridge with each trigger pull. Though the rate of fire is higher than with a bolt action firearm, it does not approach the rate of an AUTOMATIC firearm.
This confusion is being exploited by the antigunners to make those who are ignorant about firearms think that there are hundreds of thousands of citizens out there who own AUTOMATIC firearms - machine guns.
That is not the case as fully AUTOMATIC firearms have been tightly controlled since 1934, and again in 1968, and again in 1986.
Please get your terminology straight so that you do not add to the confusion. If we're going to ban assault weapons, that is SEMIAUTOMATIC firearms, then let's be clear about what it is we're banning. Personnally, I think such a ban is a waste of time and won't have an effect on shootings.
People...people...people GUNS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM...ITS THE PEOPLE.. WHY IS IT THAT THE IDEA OF A PSYCHIATRIC EXAM BEFORE GUN PURCHASE IS NEVER MENTIONED..... HECK COME TO THINK OF IT WHY NOT REQUIRE IT BEFORE DRIVER LICENSE ISSUE.... WE COULD SAVE MANY MORE LIVES...
The fact is that tragic episodes like Sandy Hook happen nearly everyday but nobody really cares unless it helps THEIR agenda.
At Sandy Hook it was the shooter's mother who broke the law and cause the death of those children.... but you can't punish a dead person. And if you BAN a weapon you only make it more popular (check out rising guns sales). The idea of the BAN is good intentions doing the wrong thing...
Last year 17 people were killed with hammers.... let's ban hammers??? I dont think everybody should have a gun...or a drivers license ... or a hammer. We should be smart enough to keep dangerous things away from dangerous people.
Please if you intend to discuss firearms (for or against) please at least know what you are talking about. Be able to clearly define and understand the different types of firearms... otherwise you are just an ignorant loud mouth (aka idiot).
What are you? You have made some of the most unAMERICAN comments and idiotic statements on this blog. How dare you... if we were to follow your advice many more children would die. SHAME ON YOU!
clint: "Evil will always be present." Agreed. How well equipped should the law allow the 'evil' to be?
food poising kills 3000 people a year Is that assault food Drunk drivers kill thousands of people a year should we limit the 30pack magazine ( correction 30 pack case ) to a 5 pack Illegal Drugs and Legal drugs kill how many thousands of people every year Lets go on and on..................
Uh, but we ban drunk driving and prosecute people for DWIs. And your point is really a silly one, which the Gun lobby puts forth all the time. Your argument is because people are killed by other causes we should give guns a pass. Sorry, not gonna happen. The purpose of a car is not to kill, even though there are many injuries caused by them. The main purpose of a gun is to kill and therefore deserves to be regulated.
junior....we all know that drunk drivers don't kill people.....CARS kill people!!
I agree that guns should be regulated in a sense that you shouldn't be able to just show up at walmart with your ID, and walk out with an arsenal.
I live in a state with some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, and yet a massacre still happened here. Laws do not stop evil. Laws stop the law abiding, and shape the culture of them. Or lets word it this way. They control the flock or aka the majority.
Let Freedom Ring.
If all those car accidents were from people using the car as a weapon, maybe I could see your point. Otherwise, the argument isn't even close.
Ranman87,
It's probably true that the vast majority of automobile related deaths and injuries are not the result of an intent to use the automobile as a weapon.
However, it seems to me that by driving our cars we admit that the level of carnage attributed to doing so is acceptable. Whenever we operate our cars on the public roads, are we not to some degree accepting the risk because of the useful nature of the car and the convenience it offers. After all, it's a machine created primarily for transportation but if misused or used carelessly, results in injury or death.
Firearms, on the other hand, are primarily used for killing and disabling. Therein lies their efficacy. They are the great equalizer. Are they not a more "honest" machine than the automobile. The gun is for killing and kills. The car is for transportation and kills. Is there also an acceptable level of carnage that we as as society (or at least some of us in this society) are willing to accept due to the usefulness of guns?
All the foregoing leads me to think that the path to at least a partial solution to shootings is greater awareness of the potential lethality of firearms and a corresponding increase in being responsible for keeping firearms that are not in use securely locked so that those who should not possess firearms cannot obtain them.

Still afraid to defend your lies, Hopeless, and instead keep deflecting! LOL! What a pansy!
You gonna spin your lies again about MLKjr, Hopeless?
You ran off like a wuss last night when I posted what his WIFE said!
But that is OK, for you see, the WHOLE BOARD KNOWS, beyond question, that you are a liar.
And I will continue to post your lies, until you man up.
Why not spin your lie about MLKjr being a "life-long Republican" despite his son, his wife,
and autobiography saying he was a Democrat? Snopes and Politifact also say the claim he was
Republican is FALSE
A Bushmaster .223, 2 handguns, and a shotgun were used. ......There wasn't a single "assault weapon" used!!

What's that line about repeating something until it seems to make sense? Not yet, though.
It seems to me, that all those old NRA member put the constitution before humanlife. That piece of paper was written 400 years ago, while they were fighting the Indians. Get of your Ass and smell the coffee, you macho guys, you only feel like a man with a riffle in your hand or to shoot a Deer or Rabbit. You dont care about anything, except your constitution and the freedom, to shoot children, by some crazy moron, that should have been locked up. Pray to God, that this weapons will never be pointed against you.And another thing, America is not a free country anymore, when people have to live in fear, and children have no future.
The constitution was written less in 1789, 234 years ago and it is the foundation of this nation. If you don't like it feel free to move to Mexico where it is illegal for private citizens to own firearms.
400 years ago? lol, Jesus Christ dude.
another shining example of the new American educational system.
Mayor Corey Booker (D): “Legal, law-abiding citizens do not kill people,” he said. He added “I’m not worried about you buying a gun and you buying a gun,” pointing to two of the other panelists.

Hey a car doesn't kill a person . the person operating it does. Get the idea, people kill not the weapon. Give all the mentally ill help, and things like this won't happen.
Now there is an original thought injected into the conversation...click....click......click.
Mayor Booker and Mayor Bloomberg are twins. They sure sound the same. I just don't know about being identical twins. Lets take a vote?
March 2007
25 years ago, the small town of Kennesaw unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of “Wild West” showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker or defender.
Indeed.
The 'Wild West' is often inaccurately portrayed. I've read it was actually much more civil then eve our own society.
so your proposal is, after 20 children are killed wantonly, is to afford greater freedom of gun ownership, perhaps grenades and missile launcher too.
i dont even want to ask whether you have any brain at all.
I am trying to point out that guns are not the problem. Especially what you falsely think are assault rifles.
guns may not be the problem, but guns make it easy to kill when the problem happens.
when a pipe breaks, water is not the problem, but it's good to shut off the water while the pipe is being fixed.
unless you can show you have fixed the problem, we'll have to take away your guns for now... thank you very much.
Yus- Show me some evidence that taking away guns will deter violent crime. Use the kind of references that you would use to wright a College level research paper.
Yus, Your water analogy would only make sense if you mean turning off the water to the whole COUNTRY, rather than just the ONE pipe that has the leak, and then leave it off!!!! I am sure you are NOT willing to give up your water as easily as that....
"wright a College level research paper". Jeez
Is anyone listening out there? Did you hear what Dowhatisright76 and Hopeisgone said?? Assault weapons were not used, in fact you can see videos of the "assault weapon" being taken out of the trunk of the killer's car. Why is there talk of banning them, if they were not even used at the school? Just a knee-jerk reaction by politicians and anti-gun advocates that love to use a crisis for their agenda, even if it doesn't fit.
What moron decided to define "assault weapon" as any semi-auto with a multi-round magazine?
the media
In every case of mass murders or 1 or 2 killed, has been by mentally ill people. So the real problem is to have a better data base to include unstable people that try and buy weapons. But there will always be some mentally ill people that will find ways to harm others. I am not against guns, but military assault weapons should not be for sale to the public. By that i mean, if they are not available, then the amount of mass murders could be reduced.
How many times do we have to point out the fact that military assault rifles are not available for public purchase. You will not find one single assault rifle at your local sporting goods store or pawn shop or at any other FFL dealer. Not one.
so we make mental evaluation a mandatory for all citizens?
also adam lanza did not buy the gun himself, his supposedly sane mom did. how would that have prevented him from getting her guns? only if she could not have got gun, no matter how lawful and sane she is.
Yus- So what you are saying is that a criminally insane person will do whatever it takes to obtain weapons regardless of the law.
Wait, so someone wanted to commit murder, and the law didn't stop them?
@ Dowhatisright
While i understand what you are trying to say, you aren't entirely correct. In states that allow it, with the correct paperwork, background checks, and money you can purchase Class III FA weapons. You can also rent them to use on the ranges at some FFL stores. They are on the shelves, just rather dang expensive to own and/or shoot (the cost of .223/5.56 and .308/7.62 is through the roof)
The Constitution was written by men who were surely smart enough to realize that permitting citizens to be well-armed would, sadly, permit a madman to murder innocents by the handful. But they also realized that forbidding citizens from being well-armed would permit a madman to murder innocents by the millions.
They wisely chose to protect our country from the far greater evil.
Ever try to murder innocents by the handful with a musket? Fire, powder, wading, ball, fire, powder, wading, ball, fire . . . get it? Can't kill by the handful with a musket. Takes too long. Not to mention, the rifiling in those things was not great. Lucky to hit the broadside of a barn.
In the days of muskets, a musket-armed citizenry could defend themselves against a similarly-armed tyrannical government. The principle is the same today. The people should have weapons equivalent to those used by the government.
Over the last 9 months alone. the DHS has purchased 1.6 billion rounds of hollow point ammunition. That's over five bullets for every man, woman and child in the US. Don't you find that troubling?
Our government is working hard to ensure that government minions are armed, and that citizens are unarmed. That fact alone should make everyone want to secretly obtain a firearm.
@CWalker-1378032
No. Have you?
Sorry you had so much trouble. I feel your pain.
Kannin is being his usual buffoon self today
"The Constitution s hall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms. " --Samuel Adams
" . . arms discourage and keep invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. ... Horrid mischief would ensue were [the law-abiding] deprived of the use of them. " --Thomas Paine
"[The Constitution preserves] the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation...[where] the government s are afraid to trust the people with arms." --James Madison
So, as usual the rightwingnut gun-ghouls will post 5,000 comments here about "libtards" trampling on their "freedom" and "rights" because Dumfux News doesn't believe in free speech and won't let them post there anymore. Duh.
repub- Why do you have to start with the name calling and baseless allegations?
If you don't want to be called names than maybe you should lead by example.
Bully 101: Come out with a visceral verbal attack that degrades the opponent with name calling and illogical references to their character.
"Semi-automatic firearms are now the most popular type of firearm in American and are used for a wide variety of legitimate sporting purposes, including hunting, small game control, target shooting and personal defense. They should not be banned.”
Any yutz who needs a semi-auto to hunt or control small game should hang their head in shame. If you can't get the job done with one shot, hang it up, you don't know how to handle a weapon.
The issue here is not hunting. It is about an attack on 2nd Amendment rights as guaranteed by the Constitution.
Ok, we'll amend the constitution then. The framers made the constitution amendable so that it could be changed to fit the time and circumstances of those living under it.
All rights enumerated in the constitution are limited by context of application and circuymstance, none are absolute.
The 2nd Amendment cannot be amended
I love these gun nut scumbags who say negative thing sabout a brave law enforcement officer like this chief. Do you lowlife gun nuts have no shame? What pieces of garbage you are. Stick your guns up your a s s where they belong. The VAST majority of Americans are sick of these disgusting gun nuts and their gun nut hysteria. You people are beyond beef. And too think you morons own weapons! Go to Newtown and spew your gun nut crap! I dare you pussys!
Bully 101: Come out with a visceral verbal attack that degrades the opponent with name calling and illogical references to their character.
Most Americans are so sick of the gun nuts 2nd admendment BS,is this all you have? You sound like a broken record. We sane, responsible Americans are so sick of your gun hysteria BS. Give it up!
How can you call yourself reasonable when all you can post is hateful speech devoid of logic or reason.
I bet the people in Newtown would love to hear you gun nuts spew your gun crazed hysteria and paranoia in Newtown. Go ahead make their day. They would tar and feather you jerks.
TONEY- Do you know that Newsvine has rules against hateful and inflammatory posts?
Dowhatisright???The only hateful, inflammatory posts I see, are the attacks on a police chief who witnessed something no human being should ever see. Piles of bloody corpses of beautiful little children, loving teachers, blasted apart, PEOPLE so damaged by the 3-11 bullets that ripped each of them into so many pieces that they were unrecognizeable!
Hateful, sarcastic, arrogant posts telling people they have no right to post a comment because they don't know how to break down and AR-15 and rebuild it blindfolded!
Ignorant people who only know the Amendments to the Constitution, not the Articles that came first! Try this one all of you who are so blinded by LUST for the power of guns that you will justify the continued murder of everyone as long as YOU have your beloved guns. Article VI, sec. II, USC "This Constitution....and Treaties made and to be made, are the Supreme Law of the Land...". Those Treaties were made with MY ancestors and I dare say that NONE of you will stand up and enforce my right to live peacefully on the lands of my ancestors. Will you give back our stolen Native lands and Honor Indian Treaties????.........Didn't think so, Hypocrites!!!
Don't you love these gun nuts who not only say rotten things about a brave police chief, but a four star general? What lowlives! These gun nuts have no shame and have damaged their tiny little brains. Keep it up with more gun nut hysteria, you turn more and more Americans against you! Your weapons are as puny as your brains!
TONY- Show me some evidence that taking away guns will deter violent crime. Use the kind of references that you would use to wright a College level research paper.
Tony,
If you don't like our rights and freedoms here in America, feel free to pack up and go somewhere else. I suggest England or Australia would be more to your liking.
Telling the truth about these gun its is not hate. The gun nuts are the ones most Americans are so sick of with their gun nut hysteria and BS. Guns matter MORE then anything to these people, they are their life their obsession. Nobody's taking your gun Jethro. Get it? Probably not. Get a life! Gun nuts can't or don't want to hear the truth, only crazed gun nut talk.
For me the constitution matters more than everything else. However coming out with a bunch of name calling and baseless claims attacking your opponent only serves to make you look like a jerk.
And therein can be found your error. The constiution is a set of abstract rules which can be amended to suit necessity and current circumstance. It is not a fixed and absolute document written in stone and dead to change, it is adaptable...unlike the opinions of too many RWNJs living in a paranoid bubble of absolutes.
Why do all you gun nuts think someone is going to take your guns away? Are you that delusional and paranoid? If so you have no business owning a weapon. Take some meds please!
Ok listen up all you rough and tough Rambo's and John Wayne's, the ban is coming, so stop the whining and stop the big bad boy/bad ass talk. They will put the ban in place and you so called internet big bad asses will comply simple as that.
Bully 101: Come out with a visceral verbal attack that degrades the opponent with name calling and illogical references to their character.
A ban is unlikely to pass a Congressional vote. Obama will have to take a huge political gamble and ram his agenda through with Executive Orders. And even if there is a ban, it is even more unlikely that it will make any difference, just like the last ban. A proposal of how to keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them in the first place, is a far more logical place to start gun control discussions.
Gun nuts have such fragile feelings and can never accept the truth about weapons. Your a small minority and the majority rules,so stick it. Like the NRA you can't stand it when anyone challenges you and if they do you have a tantrum and start yelling they're taking my guns away! 2nd amendment! Repeating that several times. There is NO reasoning EVER with a gun nut!
Tony,
You are such a useful idiot for the uninformed. You will make a good slave one day to those who do take away your personal freedoms.
@ Tony
"There is NO reasoning EVER with a anti-gun nut!"
there fixed it for you. you aren't making a good case for "your" side or arguement. i think most reasonable gun owners would gladly peaceful debate the issue of "gun control" with someone that isn't trying to ram their opinions down everyones throat. calling us reasonable gun owners names isn't going to get you anywhere other than to make yourselves look quite stupid
@TONYWARVET- If you truely are a war vet than I would suggest you call Military OneSource @ 800-3429-6477 and get in touch with someone who can help you address your anger issues.
He may be angry, but he is far from irrational.
You on the other hand appear to be using a call for civility as a weapon and a excuse for not having to answer the very real issues he is raising.
