Subscribe to RSSA former student candidate at California State University San Marcos has been arrested after being accused of attempting to manipulate votes, according to officials.
Matthew Weaver, who ran for president of the Associated Students last year, is suspected of casting hundreds of fake votes.
Weaver used "keystroke-logging" technology to steal user-names and passwords from other students, according to a criminal complaint.
The FBI led a yearlong investigation of Weaver on suspicion of wire fraud and access device fraud.
Last year, Weaver had four friends run for vice president positions, according to the complaint. He then allegedly cast hundreds of online votes for himself and his friends. But just hours before the voting ended, college employees found evidence of the alleged fraud.
If the plan had succeeded, Weaver and his friends would have received a total stipend of $36,000 for their work in the student government.
A spokesperson for the FBI said this case sends a strong message about computer hacking.
“They may think that that's not a big thing. It won't get them in trouble,” said the FBI’s Darrell Foxworth. “And I'm here to tell you that it can get you in trouble. It can create big problems for you.”
Weaver was also charged with unauthorized access of a computer. He appeared Friday in federal court, where a federal judge set his bond at $20,000, and ordered him to return to court later this month.
NBC 7 San Diego could not reach Weaver for comment and a CSUSM spokesperson declined to speak about the situation because the FBI’s investigation is ongoing.

Ask yourself this: What was the last major thing our government did that you have absolutely no criticisms of?
If election rigging can be done at this level what are the odds that it can be done a city, county, state or national level?

Actually, we don't need to speculate. Local TV news is reporting that he's a conservative activist known for making anti-gay and anti-Mexican commentaries and incitement... although I think Mr. Weaver has tried to explain away his comments as "satire"

This young man should be expelled from school and barred from attending any college in the California higher education system. If his friends were complicit in this then they should also suffer the same fate. Maybe he has seen too much of dirty politics aka. Karl Rove and his mentor Lee Atwater. At least they were smart enough to never get caught.
This young man likely has a promising future in Republican politics. The party is wildly attracted to youthful criminals with no personal character or professional ethics; as evidenced by the rise of Marco Rubio within the party heirarchy.

The guy was a crazy. Neither party would want him. He openly wrote for an extremist tabloid that tries to shock and disgust, The Koala. While I haven't done in depth research, I suspect he's more likely an anarchist or extreme libertarian than either party. But hey, it's more fun to be divisive and hate-filled for our fellow Americans; it's the other guys fault our country is doing so poorly, after all....

I believe that this was one of the groups implicated in the "Compton Cookout" anti-African American racist incident at UCSD, another area college, a couple of years ago. They threw a racially themed party that caused widespread walkouts and protests at area universities.

Local TV news is reporting that Weaver, the suspect, is the founder and editor of an anti-LGBT and anti-Latino hate newsletter called the Koala, which is distributed semi-licitly at several area schools.

Actually, it looks like Weaver attracted local press coverage even before the alleged election fraud was noted, over student anger that a known racist commentator was running for student body president.
